HuffPuff Hedgies

Hedgehog characteristics

APH's are wonderful, relatively low maintenance pets. However they do need looking after and may need the occaisional trip to the Vet.

This is easier said than done as not many vets know about hedgehogs as obviously they are quite an unusual pet. This may lead to a complete refusal to treat them or a misdiagnosis.

Life Span

Hedgehogs generally live  4-7 years, however some people report hedgies that have lived till 10. With the right care, diet and nuturing your hedgie could live quite a long time.

Illnesses

There are a few conditions that hedgehogs are prone to contracting:

Mites - these can be caught through bedding and general wanderings around the home. It is noticeable from white flaky skin under your hedgies quills. If the condition is left untreated it can lead to quill loss and a very unhappy hedgehog. Mites need to be treated via a visit to the vet and a small dose of 'Stronghold' cat and dog flea treatment. Under no circumstances should you let your vet use 'Ivermectin' as this can be fatal in hedgies.

WHS - wobbly hedgehog syndrome - this is usually life threatening. symptoms include unsteadiness on feet, wobbling.

Quirks

Annointing - this strange behaviour can occur when a hedgehog encounters a new smell, be it a person, food or random object. they somehow manage to contort their bodies into such strange positions it looks as though they are in pain. They then procede to froth at the mouth and wipe it all over themselves. This can be really pleasent when it was a messy food. See the pictures of Allie covered in carrot in the photos section. Not all hedgies do it but don't be alarmed if your hedgie looks like he's trying to turn himself inside out!
