TS 94-03 - Compression Checks prior to Tune-up

HUDSON MOTOR CAR COMPANY

DETROIT, MICH., U.S.A.

TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN

TS 94-03
File Under, Service General

To All Hudson Dealerships and Service Outlets - Compression Checks

An engine that fails to develop proper compression cannot be tuned to satisfaction. Compression should be checked with the engine at operating temperature with a reliable compression gage.

     1) Remove all spark plugs

     2) Remove carburetor air cleaner and open throttle

     3) Insert compression gauge in each spark plug hole in turn and crank the engine with the starter.

     4) Compression at each cylinder should be at least 100 pounds. Compression between cylinders should not vary more than 10 pounds.

NOTE: If gauge moves up in jerky steps of 10 or 20 pounds at a time, it generally indicates a sticky or leaking valve. If two adjacent cylinders show low compression, a leaking head gasket or loose cylinder head bolts are indicated.

     5) If compression is low, inject a small amount of oil into the cylinder to seal the rings and recheck.

     6) If compression is higher on second test, worn rings are indicated.

     7) If compression remains low on second test, valve operation is faulty or piston may be cracked or damaged.

Correct any unsatisfactory conditions found on the compression test before continuing with the tune  up.

Instrument Panel Maintenance - 1953-1954 Jet and 1954 Hornet and Wasp

Below are the procedures for instrument removal and lamp bulb replacements as applied to 1953-1954 Jet and 1954 Hornet and Wasp models.

Jet - 1953-1954

The instrument cluster on the Jet for 1953 and 1954 may be laid back to make all instrument removal and installations accessible by first removing six nuts from 1/4 inch studs.  All instrument light bulbs are removable from behind the instruments, and without removing the cluster, except the high beam beam indicator light bulb.

To remove that bulb, it is necessary to first unbolt and lay the instrument cluster back from  the dash.  Then remove the speedometer cover and two screws holding cover to speedometer.

In view of the inconvenience of replacing the bulb, be sure to use a Mazda 44 which is the longer life bulb.

The glass sections of any of the three instruments may be replaced by first removing the screws and retainers from the inner' side - accessible only after laying the instrument cluster back from the dash

Hornet & Wasp

Any one of the eight light bulbs may be replaced by reaching up behind the instrument panel.

To replace the speedometer, electric clock, fuel gauge, temperature gauge or voltage regulator, it is necessary to remove the instrument cluster.  First, disconnect battery positive lead and disconnect speedometer. Remove eight 5/16" nuts from studs that hold the instrument cluster to the dash. These are accessible without the necessity of removing radio.

Protect dash and shift control, leave all wires intact, laying instrument cluster back with glass downward. Care must be exercised. in the removal and installation of the speedometer, on account of bending or damaging the indicator, to see that it lines up with the upper edge of rivet on speedometer face plate with approximately 1/2 inch clearance between the indicator and face plate.

When installing instrument cluster, tighten one stud, then cheek all lights and speedometer for operation.

To replace the instrument cluster glass, first remove as described above, then remove six metal screw's which hold the glass retainer in position.

To All Dealers and Service Outlets:
Hudson Jet and Super Jet - Carburetor Float Level

Hudson has released information on the above subject to their dealers as follows:

Reports have been received from the field that some Jet and Super Jet engines may hesitate or cut-out when making a sharp turn. This condition can be corrected by raising the carburetor float level.

In such cases, it is recommended that the air cleaner, carburetor dust cover and bowl cover assemblies be removed and the float level checked and reset, if it is found to be too low.

Raising or lowering the float level is by bending the lip of the float, which contacts the float needle, to reduce or increase the measurement between the soldered seam of the float and the projection on the float cover.

In this case, bend lip until the float level is raised from 1/2 to 7/16 of an inch. This results in raising the level of the fuel 1/16" and eliminates the condition of momentary starving on a sharp turn."

Exhaust Pipe and Muffler Clearance - 480, 490 Series - 501, 502-13/16 503 and 504 Models

Shown in the illustration above are the exhaust pipe and muffler spaced in the proper position. Should the clearance between the muffler and the tail pipe bracket be less than that shown it may be due to the front and rear sections of the exhaust pipe not being fully telescoped or to the exhaust pipe not being telescoped into the muffler sufficiently.

If necessary, loosen the muffler clamp and shift it forward on the exhaust pipe sufficient to obtain the 3/4 inch clearance shown at the rear of the muffler, The 15/16 inch clearance between the exhaust pipe and dirt shield is the minimum that should. be allowed.

All Hudson Owners
1938 Models - Wheels and Tires

Wheels

Several changes have been made in the wheel. and tire specifications for 1938 models. The deal in particular with the use of larger tires and the adoption of a new footed disc type wheel for the Hudson 8 models, in which the in width has been increased from 4" to 4½". These wider rims are also used as standard equipment on Hudson-Terraplane Business models except Utility Coupes and Coaches, to accommodate the larger truck air wheel tires available on all business cars at extra cost. In addition, all wheels have the bolting flange located Ό" closer to the the center line to reduce overhang and lower the stresses on the front axle spindles and rear axle
shafts

The accompanying table lists the wheels and tires applying to the various 1938 models, both as standard and optional equipment.

Tires

Particular attention. is called to the complete range of tire types and sizes now available as factory options for the business models, which will provide proper tire capacity for practically all operating condition. Theincrease in rear tire to frame clearance permits the use of these larger sizes with no interference.
