Please welcome Huckabee Fans # 465, Alvin Kessinger from Indiana.
Alvin Ray Kessinger, a resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, has received the distinguished award of International Country Music Association for Independent Music’s Songwriter of the Year. Kessinger was awarded a trophy from the Association, based in Nashville, Tennessee, for his music.
Kessinger, who has written the lyrics for two country albums performed by country singer Dana Jordan on the KMA label, is thrilled by the recognition of his music. He was competing against nearly 100 other writers for this award. One of his albums is “Dana Jordan Sings the Best of A. R. Kessinger” and the other is “Thoughts From the Heart,” also performed by Jordan.
Kessinger’s music comes from his roots in Butler County, Kentucky, where he was the youngest of six children born in a log cabin. He dropped out of school in 1959 and entered the construction field. Eventually he joined the service where he earned his GED. His interest in writing country music sparked in the 1970’s when he began his writing of music and words.
In the early 1990’s, Kessinger decided he wanted to write books but he had one major obstacle to overcome. He virtually lost his sight to glaucoma which made it almost impossible to use the typewriter. However, he was able to find computer training for the visually handicapped and took advantage of the opportunity. Thanks to the use of a computer screen reading software, he was able to develop three novels that are now in print, Hard Times, Good Times, a biography of his family from 1923 to the present; Flip and Loopy, a high seas adventure of two Irish lads who set out to see the world and get more than they bargained for; and Lobo, about a young fast gun in the 1800’s who dreams of becoming of lawman but whose life took an ironic turn.
