AN INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON "TRANSLATING TODAY:TRRANSLATORS' NEEDS AND TRAINING STRATEGIES

« Traduire aujourd’hui ? Besoins des traducteurs et stratégies de formation »

Il est évident que l’on ne conçoit plus la formation du traducteur comme un simple entraînement sur le tas. Depuis l’émergence de la traductologie, on ne cesse d’aspirer à son organisation tant sur le plan théorique que pratique. Jean Delisle a déjà mis en avant le fait que la seule pratique de la traduction est insuffisante pour former un traducteur : « Beaucoup de profanes, dit-il, croient qu’il suffit de connaître deux langues pour être en mesure de traduire (..). La création d’écoles de traducteurs à travers le monde (..) est une reconnaissance implicite du fait que le bilinguisme n’est pas suffisant pour donner à quiconque une compétence de traducteur ».

      De par les aptitudes qu’elle requiert chez tout praticien, la traduction incarne toute science, pour paraphraser Giordano Bruno. C’est pourquoi, elle doit être enseignée non seulement comme exercice linguistique, mais comme initiation à la recherche et au professionnalisme. En veillant à asseoir le perfectionnisme, à la fois comme mode et objectif, nous érigeons la discipline même en métier nécessaire, certes, mais aussi exemplaire. D’ailleurs, les traducteurs ne sont-ils pas incessamment animés par cette « obsession d’une meilleure traduction » ? Osons qualifier ce fait de quête légitime et interminable d’une structuration des compétences pour cerner les sens.

      Réunies, toutes ces considérations ouvrent des pistes de réflexion susceptibles de mener à l’optimisation des procédés adoptés par l’activité traduisante, et notamment dans son aspect didactique.

      Ainsi, et outre l’indispensable jalonnement théorique à effectuer ou, plus précisément, à repenser, il serait actuellement pertinent de s’atteler à l’élucidation du processus même de traduction. Cela permettra, sans doute, d’éliminer les causes d’incompréhension éventuelle et combattre les ignorances thématiques tout autant que les insuffisances linguistiques. Un cadre théorique savamment dosé fournira, certainement, des compléments cognitifs. Ceux-là, pensons-nous, constitueront les sources mêmes d’inspiration pour une pédagogie en matière d’enseignement de la traduction.

      Par ailleurs, et avec l’essor des technologies de l’information et le développement des outils bureautiques et informatiques, le travail du traducteur s’effectue désormais par le biais de nouvelles applications réunies sous le nom d’ ^« industries de la langue ^». C’est précisément dans ce contexte qu’est née la traductique qui,  de par son aspect hybride, soulève plusieurs questions relatives aux méthodes d’analyse et de traitement de la traduction, aux outils de la formalisation et de modélisation des données et, enfin, à celles des applications informatiques d’aide à la traduction et aux enjeux qu’elles engendrent.

      Considérée comme « carrefour multiple », l’enseignement de la traduction évoque décidément, et avec acuité, la question de la spécialisation. En effet, il importe de savoir que le discours spécialisé (technique ou scientifique) est un sous- langage ayant son propre mode

d’expression. D’où, nous notons que la traduction spécialisée exige plus de rigueur et plus de recours à la recherche documentaire et terminologique.

      Du coup, sur le plan pratique, la traduction des textes techniques pose un problème à la fois didactique et substantiel que nous formulons en ces termes : Faut- il apprendre au traducteur une spécialisation ou est- ce qu’il serait plus pertinent d’apprendre au spécialiste l’art de la traduction ?

      Dans ce cadre, et avec le concours du Centre National de la Traduction (CNT), l’Institut Supérieur des Etudes Littéraires et des Sciences Humaines (Université de Tunis) organise, les 11 et 12 mars 2009, au CNT, un séminaire sur le thème : « Traduire aujourd’hui ? Besoins des traducteurs et stratégies de formation ».

      Nous proposons ci- dessous quatre axes, qui ne sont nullement limitatifs :

1/  Quel cadre théorique pour la formation des traducteurs ?

2/  La formation des traducteurs : quelle pédagogie ?

3/  La traductique : quelle méthodes ?

4/  Terminologie et traduction : quelle assise pour la spécialisation ?

This conference is jointly organised by the Higher Institute of Applied Languages and Computer Science of Nabeul (ISLAIN) and the National Translation Center (NTC):

It shall provide a forum for contact, discussion and interaction between all participants who are interested in the topic: “TRANSLATION CHALLENGES: FROM TRAINING TO PROFESSION.”

It  shall include general plenary sessions and applied workshops. Participation is open to professionals, translators, journalists, and translation teachers.  A selection of the papers to be accepted shall be published after the conference in the journal of the the National Translation Center (NTC): Mizan Attarjamah.

Translation is both a cultural and a linguistic phenomenon. More than a simple mechanism of transferring textual knowledge in independent discourses, it involves processes of the movement of people, ideas, technologies, and literatures between different places, cultures, languages, and even times. Therefore, it is crucial today to reconsider its paramount importance at the eve of the 21^st century, mainly characterized by the unprecedented digital revolution. As a result of technological advances, translation as both a profession and a training  has undergone considerable changes over the last decade. Nowadays, machine translation and computer-aided translation software are often used by professional translators in their daily work.  Such changes have brought about both opportunities and challenges for translation and translator training alike. One key question today is how translator training should respond to these changes. While translation is gaining more and more academic attention in the 21st Century to respond to an increasing market demand it is also important to look at the issues raised in translation theory and the contribution of this discipline to cross-cultural communication.

Appel à contribution

La traduction est à la fois un phénomène linguistique et culturel. Plus qu’un simple mécanisme de transfert de connaissances, la traduction est un processus impliquant les échanges d’idées de technologies et de littératures entre les langues, les cultures, les peuples et même les temps. Dès lors, il est indispensable de repenser la traduction en tant que discipline et profession en ce début de 21ème siècle  marqué par une révolution numérique et technologique sans précédents. Le métier de traducteurs de même que la traduction en tant que sujet d’études ont subi des changements considérables durant la dernière décennie. De nos jours, les logiciels de traduction automatique font partie des instruments de travail quotidiens du traducteur. De tels changements ouvrent de nouveaux horizons à la traduction et aux traducteurs de même qu’ils posent de nouveaux défis. Il en découle un nombre d’interrogations sur la traduction et le traducteur, dont notamment l’adaptation de la formation du traducteur à ces nouvelles donnes. Au-delà de l’aspect académique qui focalise l’intérêt du monde de la traduction, d’autres questions sont soulevées, notamment par une demande du marché de plus en plus importante et exigeante et par un intérêt accru du monde de la recherche pour la contribution de cette discipline à la communication interculturelle.
