Doctor Who is the best british sci-fi programme ever. It centre's around this alien (or Time Lord) called the Doctor (or Theta Sigma) and his travels in his time machine the TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space), along with his companions sometimes human, sometimes alien. The Doctor grew up on his home planet of Gallifrey and attended the academy all Time Lord do until he started his travels. Unforatunatly the Doctor stole his TARDIS so when he returned to Gallifrey in his third regeneration* he was exiled back to Earth and remained working for UNIT until he regenerated again and could escape. Since then the Doctor has returned once more to his own planet to fight in the war between his people the Time Lords and the Dalek's of Skaro. He fought in the frontline because of his guilt, for it was in fact his fault the Dalek's had waged war on them in the first place. They originally had a peace treaty with the Time Lorsd but when the Dalek's began to terrorize other species around the galaxy the Doctor went back in time to try and stop the Dalek's from being invented. This resulted in simply making them mad the Doctor had no choice but to help with the war effort. After the fall of Aracadia the Doctor knew the Time Lords were going to lose. It was important that the Dalek's did not survive so the Doctor did the only thing he could. He attempted to destroy everyone thing by calling upon the power held by all Time Lords that is not supposed to be used except for in situations like that. The Doctor welcomed death and was both surprised and extremly upset to find he was the only survivor. The killer of his own people. He went into denial. He had cause the war, he had killed his friends and family and now he was destined to continue alone; the curse of being a Time Lord. After the Time War he promised himself he would never get close to anyone again for fear of losing them. This was thrown straight out the window the minute he met companion number 33, Rose Tyler. The Doctor unfortunatly lost Rose and once again has had to travel alone, until the next person to help him through his sorrows turns up...
*Regeneration is when every cell in a Time Lord is dying and he changes his whole body to stay alive. The Doctor has done this ten times now and supposedly only has thirteen altogether. However the Doctor likes impossible and it is doubtfull that he will die completly when his numbers are up.
The Doctor has had to regenerate nine times and has had ten bodies. Each new Doctor has bought with it a new personality and new companions. Here is a low down of all ten Doctor's and their mad sense of humour's:
NUMBER ONE: WILLIAM HARTNELL
Doctor number one was grandfatherish and took many people under hiw wing to show them the universe. He had many companions but each one he welcomed with as much vigor as the previous one. He was very noble and tried his hardest to save the day and help whenever he could.
NUMBER TWO: PATRICK TROUTON
Doctor number two hit our screens with his very eccentric personality and even madder companions. Loved by everyone the new Doctor captured even more fans and had them on the edge of their seats with the amazing ways he saved the universe and the Earth.
NUMBER THREE: JON PERTWEE
Doctor number three was once again eccentric, though not quite as much so and spent more time thinking before rushing in to save the day. He was not as friendly as the previous Doctor and sometimes his harshness sparked arguments between him and his companions.
NUMBER FOUR: TOM BAKER
Doctor number four was the first Doctor to deal with domestic. He became very attatched to two certain companions, Romana (another Time Lord) and Sarah Jaen Smith (an Earth girl, journalist) who found the Doctor's personality and obsession with jelly babies intriguing but at the same time the downfall of their relationship. Sarah was left back on Earth in the wrong place and missed the Doctor dreadfully, only finally moving on with her life when he returned many years later in a new form.
NUMBER FIVE: PETER DAVISON
This Doctor didn't have time for winging companions and was often quite brusque, forgetting a lot of the time that they weren't Time Lords and saw things differently to him. He had one too many arguments with Adric (a particularly annoying companion from a different universe, across E-space) and threatened to dump him back home. The Doctor soon regretted this when Adric bravely died to save him. (I didn't miss him mind cause he was so flipping irritating!!!)
NUMBER SIX: COLIN BAKER
Number six was the first Doctor to actually be nasty. He was hated yet loved by the audience and his companions never stuck around long. We saw a different side of the Doctor and learnt more about why he was travelling.
NUMBER SEVEN: SYLVESTER MCCOY
Doctor number seven was very much a regal character. Much slower to rise with his temper, he became much more subdued than his previous self. His most notable compaion, Ace, was younger than the othe rcompanions he'd had, but also bought the spark the show needed making them the perfect time travelling duo in a long time.
NUMBER EIGHT: PAUL MCGANN
Doctor number eight was much more angsty. Appearing only once in an american T.V. movie version of Doctor Who he was not given the chance to shine and is now thought of as another T.V. Doctor, not always being counted as one of the proper regenerations.
NUMBER NINE: CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTONE
Doctor number nine, fresh from the time war, was battered and bruised mentally as well as physically. Having only just regenerated as payment for what he did he attempts to save Earth once again without getting caught up in anything domestic or human involving. Well that just wasn't going to happen. He gained a new companion, friend, and almost lover until he had to regnerate to save newly found Rose Tyler, causing them to have to work at re-building their odd relationship.
NUMBER TEN: DAVID TENNANT
Doctor number ten isn't quite as closed off as Doctor number nine and the hand holing/hugging thing he had with his newest companion Rose began to become more and more frequent, the flirtatious looks and banter hinting more and more at their growing affection for each other. They grew close and very almost had something until Rose had to escape to a parallel universe. Rose admitted her love and the Doctor came so close it was almost unbearable, but maybe it will make it easier for Rose to move on (NO GODDAMNIT!!!! RUSSEL T DAVIES!!!! WHY ARE YOU SO CRUEL TO US WHOVARIANS WHO LONG FOR THE DOCTOR AND ROSE TO BE TOGETHER???????????!!!!!!!??!?!?!!?!?!?!?! As you can tell I'm a little bit upset. Understatement of the century.) After a teary goodbye they went their seperate ways and now once more the Docto is left alone until he finds another companion to heal the pain. (I SWEAR TO GOD IF MARTHA GETS TO KISS THE DOCTOR I'M COMPLAINING!!!! HE'S GOTTA MOURN FOR ONE WHOL SERIES AT THE VERY LEAST!!!!!!!)
The new series of Doctor Who has remained very Earth based and thus a lot of humans are now involved. From companions to mothers from hell, the Dcotor took on more than he bargained for when he asked Rose Tyler to join him in the TARDIS.
ROSE TYLER:
Rose is the bubbly blonde companion of the Doctor. Always up for adventure and never very far from the comforting hand of the Doctor, she's the Doctor's soul mate and the pair were just meant to be together. If it weren't for a very mean writer called Russel T. Davies these two would be a couple right now and the Doctor would be happy for once.
JACKIE TYLER:
Jackie Tyler is Rose's mother and took an instant dislike to the Doctor when he took Rose off for a year accidentily instead of just twelve hours. The Doctor is in fact scared of Jackie and her slaps and tries to steer well clear, claiming that he doesn't do 'domestic' so as not to visit too often. Rose, who loves the Doctor deeply is more than willing to do this and even in the episode 'Doomesday' plans to leave her family forever in the other universe to stay with the Doctor.
MICKEY SMITH:
Rose's now ex-boyfriend. He was mad at Rose for leaving him at first but as the first series came to a close he realised that Rose loved the Doctor a lot and he would rather see her happy than force her to stay with him. So in the end he lets her go knoing that one day she'll come back, even if it's only to be friends.
PETE TYLER:
Rose's dad who died when she was one. The Doctor took Rose back to see her dad before he died and that adventure almost ended in disaster. But all was fine in the end and the Doctor and Rose's relationship became stronger. In the parallel universe Pete is still alive but after the Cyberman excaped his Jackie died and in the end Rose's Jackie and the other Pete get together and Jackie falls pregnant with a sibling for Rose. If only it had ended as happily for the Doctor and Rose themselves.
CAPTAIN JACK HARKNESS:
Another companion who both Rose and the Doctor cared deeply for, despite a rocky begining to their friendship. After being picked up by the TARDIS they had a few adventure's together before Jack was abandoned by them (not intentionally) and left to join Torchwood in the present day. (For more in depth bio see TORCHWOOD page).
