HRA Ultimate Frisbee

As you may or may not know, we at HRA are host to a somewhat loose Ultimate Frisbee team. Hampton Roads Academy is a school in Newport News, Virginia.  Our team has been around for a number of years and has been "coached" by Ben Rous.

This year, we (Jeremy Hyman and Ankoor Patel) are seniors at HRA and were assigned the annual "Senior Project," a requirement for graduation. Each year, a theme is given to the entire senior class and it is up to the seniors to provide a fitting project. This year, the theme was "change." We wanted to incorporate something into our project that we both love doing and what better was there than Ultimate.

Our mission is to basically document the change and development of Ultimate in the Tidewater area over the years. That's not it. We also want to host a hat tournament at HRA in order to "wrap things up." We believe that this tournament will be the cherry on top, and a great way to mark the end of our project by bringing in members of the "Tidewater Ultimate Frisbee organization" to compete in some serious head-to-head combat. Any proceeds will go directly to the UPA (http://www.upa.org) which will then go to aiding the development of Ultimate Frisbee as a whole around the country(http://www3.upa.org/donate). We believe that the UPA is an appropriate organization to donate the money to because it corresponds to the theme and goal of our project so well.

We are hosting the first ever hat tournament at HRA in the history of the school.

When?

It is to take place on Sunday February 11, 2007 at 10:00 AM with an alternate rain date on the following Sunday (February 18, 2007). This is sure to be a good way to test out your skills after a couple weeks of Winter League.

Take Exit Oyster Point Road West exit # 256 A  
Keep straight off the ramp until the first Traffic light (Oyster Point Rd./Victory Blvd intersection with Academy Lane)

Take a right onto Academy Lane (Hampton Roads Academy) 
Playing fields are behind te gyms
Park wherever you find parking   

Who?

Anybody is welcome to play in this tournament. All ages and all skill levels are welcome to play. Althouth we want to be competitive and strive to win, we still want to keep in mind the big picture (to realize the growth of Ultimate over the years in the peninsula). 

Specifications

The cost will be 20 dollars per person
Payments will be made upon arrival to the tournament
Each player will receive a cutomized t-shirt and disc along with food and drinks and not to mention a really good time

Registering

Teams will be made by the rankings as followed (please e-mail your basic information, including: name, gender, age, and ranking 1-5) 

5- All throws and extremely fit/Lots of tournament experience
4- Solid backhand and forehand and in good physical shape/ a good bit of competeitve play history
3- Pretty good throws (most of the time) somewhat fast/ pickup pretty regularly
2- You know how to throw a forehand and backhand but they are pretty inconsistent/not very fit/Pickup once a month
1- You know most of the rules and you have a backhand but no extras/ never really play   

**Why?**

All money that is raised in this tournament will be donated to the UPA. As stated earlier, the purpose of this project is to document the growth of Ultimate in the peninsula, but there is also another underlying purpose of furthering the development of this sport throughout the nation. Ultimate is such an amazing newly budding sport and we know it. Unfortuneately, not everyone knows that. This is where we come in. We as ultimate players who have passion for the sport must help to develop Ultimate and branch away from the low key, unnoficial, and underestimated ways of Ultimate Frisbee. All money raised and donated in this tournament will go to the UPA in order to help accomplish this goal along with thousands of others who are trying to acheive similar aspirations.
