The Floodlight Motion Sensor How-to

In this how-to we will hack a flood light motion sensor for use as a prop trigger. The cheapest way to buy one is to purchase the cheapest spot light fixture that has a motion sensor. I have seen them for $15 dollars and I have also heard of People getting them for $10. When you purchase just make sure that one of the time option settings in 1 minute. I purchased one that did not and had to return it and change it.

The items that you will need:

1) The motion sensor light fixture
2) An electrical box
3) A cover for the box that the sensor and screw into
4) A sacrificial extension cord
5) Wire nuts
6) Black tape
7) Screw in cable strain reliefs

The first step is to take the electrical box and plug any holes that you are not going to use with the screw in plugs (the box comes with these). Also the strain reliefs can be installed now.

The next step is to attach the motion sensor to the cover plate and route the wires throught the foam gasket.

Next take the exstension cord and cut it in the middle. The exstension cord should be a outdoor type. Once you cut the cord Idetify the hot wire (normally black or red), the neutral wire (white), and ground (green or bare). Connect the motion sensor according to its directions. Wire nuts and tape must be used for all connections.

Close up the box and make sure that it is sealed and your done.
