   Many people assume that there is a reasoning for the 11 points of the Maple Leaf that's centred on the flag. But, there is no special significance to the eleven points. The symbolism lies in the maple leaf and not the 11 points.




:: The Maple Leaf: An Emblem of Canada through its History
 

The maple leaf has been recognized as the symbol of Canada and its people from the early days of Canadian history:

  •  In 1834: When the Societe Saint Jean-Baptiste was founded, the maple leaf was proposed as an emblem.
  • In 1860: The maple leaf was used as decoration when the Prince of Wales visited Canada.
  • In 1868: The maple leaf appeared on the coat of arms.
  • In 1921: The royal arms of Canada proclaimed it as a distinctive emblem.
  • In 1965: The maple leaf received official status with the new National Flag of Canada and proclamation by Her Majesty the Queen in 1965.

:: Other Interesting Facts
 

-The Premier of Newfoundland used the flag as a protest by taking down the Canadian Flag, in  late 2004.  The Government of Canada hopes that this is only a one time incident.

-This year is the 40th anniversary of the Canadian Flag.

-The two colours of the Canadian Flag were chosen by King George on November 1921.

-The Maple Leaf was used in 1834 to represent the land and people of Canada.

-Lester B. Pearson prefered another flag towards the current Canadian Flag.

-Another name for the Canadian Flag is the Maple Leaf Flag.

-Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced on February 12, 1996 that February 15 will be officially designated National Flag of Canada Day.
