I have been volunteering and fostering cats for rescues for many years now. In 2006, I went into yet another county run animal control shelter to save a couple of cats for the rescue I was volunteering for at that time. While filling out the rescue paperwork a woman came in with 3 cardboard boxes full of cats and kittens. This woman filled out the paperwork to abandon all of these poor souls and was told by the AC officers that they were so full that her animals would never make it into the public's viewing area for even a chance of being adopted. She did not care, she could no longer afford to feed all of them and they just kept getting pregnant.
From that day on I knew I had to do something to be able to help people like this get their pets fixed if they could not afford to or just would not. This lady as well as many others may have atleast kept her original 3 mom cats had someone been able to offer spay assistance to her. Unfortunately, most county shelter workers see this all the time and the county has little funding to help in these situations. Thus the forming of Helping Prevent Homeless Pets, Inc. started with this intent in mind.
Helping Prevent Homeless Pets (HPHPets) is an all volunteer, non-profit 501c3 organization (donations are tax deductible) dedicated to providing financial assistance directly to vets for spay and neuter surgeries. We have a wonderful vet we work with that provides us excellent service and great prices to help us accomplish our goals. We would love to be able to offer free spays and neuters to every person turning in their cats or dogs at our county shelter if they would just be willing to keep them. And not leave them there terrified, alone, and ultimately paying with their life just because there are not enough people adopting.
We are able to provide this financial assistance with contributions from people who believe in our cause, fundraisers, and animal welfare grants. Any contributions are greatly appreciated so that we can continue to Help Prevent Homeless Pets!
