Jay Z sued for millions

Dotmusic - Friday, May 25

Jay Z is at the centre of a $15 million lawsuit, amid allegations that he stole the concept for the film "State Property". The rap heavyweight is named alongside Damon Dash as defendants in the legal dispute, which was filed in Manhattan Federal Court earlier this month. Antonne Jones claims to have written a novel entitled "The Family: A Philadelphia Mob Story", which he says Roc-A-Fella used as the basis for the box office hit. His book apparently follows the tales of "four men seeking 'ghetto glory' - money, power and fame", reports allhiphop. In the lawsuit, Jones says he held discussions with Jay and Dash in 1998 but rejected their offer of $50,000, after requesting $500,000, and never heard from them again. "State Property", which starred Beanie Sigel, was released in 2002 and set in Philadelphia. Lions Gate, the film's distributor, are also named as a defendant.

Jordin Sparks becomes youngest "Idol" winner

Reuters – Thursday, May 24

Seventeen-year-old diva Jordin Sparks won the 2007 "American Idol" television singing contest on Wednesday, beating Blake Lewis to become the youngest ever winner. Sparks beat 25-year-old Lewis by a telephone vote in which a record 74 million votes were cast. Host Ryan Seacrest announced the result with Sparks, dressed in a long, flowing gold gown, having difficulty catching her breath. "Thank you so much for everything -- Mom and Dad, I love you!" said the emotional teenager. Sparks, who is from Glendale, Arizona, and the daughter of former National Football League player Phillippi Sparks, auditioned for "American Idol" as soon as she became eligible at the age of 16. "She sings so good it's hard to believe that she's 17," music legend Smokey Robinson told reporters after the show. Throughout the season, Lewis, a Bothell, Washington native, put an original twist on classic songs by beat-boxing. Following Tuesday's final performances, however, all eyes were on Sparks. At the end of that show, judge Randy Jackson told Sparks that she had "wiped the floor" with Lewis and both he and Cowell on Wednesday's show predicted she would win.

A second breathalyser test showed Rhymes was under the legal limit. The Grammy-nominated musician also turned down a plea deal that would have sent him to jail for one year, according to officials in New York. This is the fourth time that Rhymes has been arrested in the past ten months. The rapper also faces two charges for assault and one for driving with a suspended licence. In exchange for pleading guilty, Rhymes would have served one year for the assault charges, been fined $1,500 (£1,250) and forced to participate in an anti-drink driving programme, said Edison Alban, a spokesman for the Manhattan District Attorney's office. The next court date has been set for July 10. In the past Rhymes' lawyer, Scott Leemon, has been quoted in press reports as calling Rhymes' arrests "payback" for the star's refusal to help police in their investigation into the fatal 2006 shooting of Rhymes' former bodyguard, Israel Ramirez.
