Horseappleacres Observatory

The Osage-orange (Maclura pomifera) is a plant in the mulberry family Moraceae. It is also known as Osage-apple, mock orange, hedge-apple, horse-apple, hedge ball, bois d'arc, bodark (mainly in Oklahoma and Texas), and bow wood. Common slang terms for it include monkey brain, monkey ball, monkey orange, and brain fruit due to its brainlike appearance.

The name "Horseappleacres" came from a remark my dad made once after we bought our house and added the horses.  He called one day and asked "How are things at Horseappleacres?" refering to the piles of manure left by my horses around the pasture, since that day the name has stuck, much to the dismay of my wife.

Horseappleacres Observatory is a private astronomical observatory located on the Palmer Divide in northern El Paso County, Colorado.  The observatory is a roll-off building very similar in design to that of Sunflower Observatory with some minor design changes.

I wanted to have full access to the entire deck so the idea was to have the building suspended on the side of the deck by garage door track.  After some searching I found the track I needed and bolted it to the rim joists.  The building overhangs the deck by about six inches which allows for the garage door rollers.  The rollers are bolted to the bottom of the observatory frame.  Since it invariably  gets well below freezing in the winter, I decided that I needed to use the building as a semi-warm room and a place for the computer to set up.  With that in mind, I built a door with a window in the middle so that I can watch the telescope while I'm observing.
