Hope Rescue was founded in 2005 by Vanessa Waddon and Alyson Sowden who decided to take action after learning about the high number of stray dogs destroyed in Council pounds every year. They did not want to set up a rescue in the conventional sense, but rather one that could act as a point of co-ordination between the pounds and those reputable rescues that could offer spaces. By offering to transport the dogs from the pounds to their secured rescue spaces, often across country, many hundreds of dogs were then able to find safe havens rather than face destruction.
Hope Rescue has grown considerably since those early days. We move an average of twenty dogs a week, but at peak times this can be as high as forty dogs. We now lease boarding kennels to hold those dogs that cannot be secured rescue spaces immediately and would otherwise have been destroyed. Whilst we remain primarily a co-ordinating rescue we also found it necessary to take in dogs for rehoming ourselves, as we sometimes were unable to secure rescue spaces for those dogs with medical problems or some of the larger breeds such as bull breeds.
Hope Rescue is run by a fantastic team of volunteers with no paid staff and is entirely self-funded. Most of our outgoings are for boarding, medical and transport costs that we cannot reclaim through rehoming fees as the dogs are rehomed by other rescues. Fundraising is therefore always an uphill struggle!
