90-97 Accord antenna

 

Antenna mast replacement is fairly easy to do,the first thing to do

is remove the mast nut

when the nut is removed turn on the radio and pull up on the mast to

remove it from antenna tube; it might require a sharp tug .

The ground tube should come out with the mast; if not it can be removed later with a close fitted drill bit

Next go into the trunk

 

 

remove the tail light cover and the plastic retainer buttons

then fold the liner towards the center of the trunk

 

unplug the antena leads and the power connector and loosen the 10mm bolt

the antenna unit should drop down

Remove the drain tube then take the unit to a workbench

remove the 2 phillips screws and the cover plate

remove the spool and if the mast lead broke it will be inside;

Clean out all the crud from this area, and be sure the spool turns easily

Replace the cover and flip the unit over

remove 4 screws and open the case

remove the 2 screws that hold the breaker plate on and flip it up out of the way

The arrow is pointing at a pin that holds tension between the mast lead and the drive gear, it may be worn and have a flat spot from wear, turn it 180 degrees

Clean out the teeth of the mast drive gear and reassemble the parts

If you want a really positive clutch action you can take this apart and remove the rubber insert on the clutch face

Reassemble the unit and put it back into the car attach everything except the

mast retaining nut, Take the new mast and run the lead into the antenna tube ,

have a helper turn the radio on, you can turn the mast lead around and

feel/hear the drive gear pushing the mast lead. Then have the helper shut the

radio off and feed the mast lead into the antenna tube. It might be needed to

turn the radio on and off a couple times to get the antenna all the way down,

then replace the mast nut with the trim under it.

Put the trunk liner back together and remember to shut off the radio when

going thru the carwash.
