124-- Mass= 0.3345 kg Volume=6336.5 cm3 Intactness=100 Score=0.047

Condition of package: Slightly smashed in one corner, but overall it came out quite intact.
Teacher comments: This has been a fun project for Jeremy. He has packaged and "tested" the package by himself before we sent it. He has handled the scoring mostly on his own. He has come to me with questions and guidance and this has been a fun experience. The only negative factor has been that it appears that our package has not made it to the sender(as per your e-mail) in Kentucky. Since it has been about 10 days, I fear it may have been lost. :-(

(***Just a note, the pkg in question WAS received and evaluated)
Student comments: Overall, I was rather surprised at how well the package fared. It was (it appeared) rather large for a pringle, but its always good to be careful!

131-- Mass=0.0142 kg Volume= 100.555 cm3 Intactness= 5 Score=3.52

Package condition: the package looked fine.

Student comments: Package consisted of a Bicycle Playing Card box stuffed with cotton balls and covered with clear plastic wrap. Half of the chip was in many very small pieces, just less than 20, and the other half was completely intact. It was very light, only half an ounce. The chip had bits of cotton ball stuck to it, but I could still have eaten it and felt none the worse. Also, we received the chip today, March 5. Thanks again for deciding to do this contest. It was really fun.

Student Comments: We think the use of the cotton candy to cushion the cracker actually caused the cracker to soften some. Also when we opened the box the cotton candy was no longer soft and puffy but hardened some and did not cushion the cracker once it hardened. Although the kids loved the idea and wanted to eat the cotton candy. _____________________________________________________________________________________

208--   Mass= 0.0199 kg   Volume=220.15 cm3   Intactness= 100   Score=22.83

Package condition: great condition for having traveled from Minnesota to California!

Teacher comments: This was very basic: A Jell-O box containing a chip wrapped in toilet paper! Proof that sometimes the most successful designs are the simplest, and that over-engineering or over-thinking a problem isn't always the best answer.

Student comments: Small package. I didn't expect the chip to be in such good shape. It had a tiny notch in one end, but the piece wasn't in the package, so I think the notch was there when it was mailed.

Teacher Comments: I would have appreciated more guidelines for this project was it
about the actual packaging of the individual chip or was it about how small a box it could be shipped in? I also don't understand the score for intactness I know 100 is for a perfect chip but how do you rank a chip that is broken or chipped a sliding scale for everyone to use would help to eliminate conflicting judgments.

Teacher comments: This group did a nice job of creating home-made packaging using items from around the home. They used foil to keep the chip intact and surrounded the chip with three layers of packaging. Great job!

This was a very smart way to package a Pringle. The Pringle was set in an empty scotch tape role with a clear lid that fit very well. The pringle was wrapped in bubble wrap! Made it with no chips! _____________________________________________________________________________________

Teacher commentsI thought it was packaged really well. The chip was perfect upon arrival but when we tried to take it out of the sponge, it fell apart because it was packaged very tight. We based our intactness score on the original arrival before we took it out.
Student comments:   Asher, age 6 1/2: It was cool how it came in.

David, age 8 1/2: It was in an interesting package but I think they should have sealed it differently.

Teacher comments: This was a neat design. The chip had a few small pieces out of it, but was still in good condition. The design was really innovative, using a cardboard tube suspended inside the box to protect the chip. A second, curled up piece of cardboard tube held the chip in place. I think the damage probably came from the smaller, inside piece of cardboard tube flattening out, or the chip shifting in the outer tube. Despite that, a great job of engineering!

Teacher’s comments: This was very challenging and I ended up having to have Dad help us because I couldn’t figure out the formula to score it on my own and it is pretty advanced math so my daughter doesn’t know it yet!! Wow what an experience!!! The way the chip was sent was very inventive. It is so exciting to see how they are going to figure it all out. Thanks so much for the experience.

Student comments: I was very excited about receiving my package and couldn’t wait to open it to see if the chip was broken or not. I think they did a good job on their package.

Teacher Comments: Thank you for your time and coordinating this project. We had a lot of fun.

Student Comments: Greatly packed, perfectly intact. It helped me with my math and understanding of the metric system of weights and measures.

Package condition: The package's condition was fine

Teacher Comments: All of us thought their idea of nesting a chip between a top and bottom of a "snack pack" was a great idea. It was funny because we sent our own package to ourselves several times before sending it out to our evaluators. When our (I think it was third) third package came in a million little pieces, and we received A package, we decided to merge their idea with one of ours. I think it was our 5th mailing to ourselves that the chip arrived in perfect condition. Feel free to let their team know that what we did was to make the top and bottom be separated from each other enough so that they could not squeeze the chip. We used little brads (clasps) to fasten the snack pack top and bottom in place. Then we wrapped that container in a bunch of bubble wrap (large bubbles, not the small ones). And finally sent that in a 5 by 7 envelope. Hopefully our evaluators will receive our bundle of joy in perfect condition. :-)

Student Comments: My ten year old thinks the whole concept of sending a Pringle through the mail was a "very cool idea."

- My thirteen year old says that it made her "think out of the box...or, the Pringle's canister, rather."

- My sixteen year old did not involve himself in the project as much as his two younger sisters, but he concedes that there was value in the contest. He has already experienced the whole trial and error thing in his own competitions (we have a local Lego Olympiad) where after many attempts, he finally got his Lego robot to do whatever the challenge was put before him.

- Overall, my children benefited from the whole try, fail, try, fail,... try, succeed fun. There was great joy and jubilation yesterday when our little Pringle arrived back home in perfect condition. Hopefully, the little guy will arrive in perfect condition to South Carolina!

Thank you, Pringles Mom, for all your hard work and obvious administrative and organizational skills used to promote this thing. Perhaps you'll be able to come up with cool things in upcoming years. We'd love to participate in those activities.

Student Comments: I wasn't sure whether or not you were supposed to remove the outside packaging before measuring. My mom said not to so we measure the whole thing.

Teacher comments: What a great experience. My students looked forward to their Pringle arriving in the mail. They also enjoyed figuring out if the package we designed would hold up to the post office's cruelty.
Student Comments: This was a cool experiment. I hope we do this again. Thanks for coordinating it. _____________________________________________________________________________________

Package condition: Condition is excellent-no damage

Teacher comments: The package was in one of those gold jewelry boxes like you would get at a jewelry store. It seemed to be very sturdy. The inside was rigged with rubber bands and secured on the outside with toothpicks to keep the pringle from moving around in the box. Only the 2 ends were slightly chipped.
Student comments: Great job!_____________________________________________________________________________________

Package condition: good

Teacher comments: Great idea! I'm sorry the postmark was too late. (This package was postmarked 3-3-07, the last day to send packages)  The damage appeared to be caused by the pringle being crunched between the two pieces of styrofoam. Perhaps if the dug out part was larger and/or if there had been a little air space around it as a cushion.

Student comments: The hollowed out space should have been bigger/deeper. Maybe you could have "tested" your idea.

Teacher Comments: This was a very fun challenge. The scoring to get to an overall score has been somewhat tricky. We probably shouldn't have been comparing the formula with some already shown in the results.
Student Comments: I thought this was a really fun thing to do, but I wasn't much help with the scoring. Some of it I understood but some I didn't get. _____________________________________________________________________________________
