HOMEMADE: LEITRIM

Written Word Weekend, Drumshanbo, August Bank Holiday 2009

Expectations are bad.

The Blond Mushroom Women

Have begun quiet farming,

Shadows becoming real,

Small jobs each day bring progress,

If done with right intent.

Each object forms a puzzle,

I try them piece by piece,

I find some of them on mountain tops,

And some beneath my feet.

The dull light of my kitchen

is light enough for me

to see, to be,

whatever, forever,

eternally.

"The soil in Leitrim is poor, in places no more than an inch deep. Underneath is daub, a blue-grey modelling clay, or channel, a compacted gravel. Neither can absorb the heavy rainfall. Rich crops of rushes and wiry grasses keep the thin clay from being washed away."

John McGahern, Memoir

Common Unhygienic Birthday Practices

Quick exits and entries,

And firm door closing,

From the room with heat.

At junctions,

Relaying intentions to fellow road users,

By the power of the mind.

Daily window cleaning or lack of light,

Brought on by the desires of cats,

And other animals.

Sealed in tight, all draughts excluded,

Smoke mysteriously,

Manages to escape.

A box of junk provides,

heat, amusement, ornament,

and road surfacing.

All hope of higher aspirations,

Disappear,

In the scramble to provide the essentials.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Space which no longer exists in this context.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another time.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Alphabet

Summer brings mowing,

Other peoples birthdays,

Unnecessary apologies and guests,

End of fires and hot water too,

For a warm black cat,

Which leaves bats on floor.

Still building with stone,

In public and private,

During the days of poly-tunnel conspiracies.

It is hoped that Ulysses,

Will provide an additional income stream,

If washboard player and tour guide don't work out.

Makey-uppy mentality spreads,

To trying stone-age gardening,

Horse power and a new alphabet.

End of one Line,

Start of another,

Ice-cream is finally accepted.

For Clea

Listening to forgotten music,

that was never discovered,

In my own authentic club of life.

While the toxins of burning paint,

fill the empty spaces,

For to create heat is still a need.

I am surrounded by moments,

that become momentous for other people,

As life is only truly lived when felt.

An anniversary has passed,

As another light bulb blows,

I drink absinth almost every night.

It is said my friends are catalysts,

for change and some not,

I continue to refuse to salsa dance during the end times.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some exercises to keep warm in a building

Cracked lips and not quite flu's,

Sticking my tongue out,

For hot water and honey,

But later saved by the ginger lady,

Cancelled vet appointment,

For newly indoor cat,

No need for money in the egg economy,

Finally digging ditches,

Of the draining variety,

In the land of synchronicity,

Old wardrobes make good firewood,

The end of damp comes but slowly.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Stay Between the Ditches"

Overheard Leitrim saying.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Moment

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

No ego please.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Winter in Leitrim

Cosy only at night,

Fires from last years wet fence posts and

Old pieces of door

The gloss paint flaking from its

Rusted hinge and nail studded surface

Since the first frost,

A graveyard now where a herb garden was

A dead peasant provides a meal for a hungry cat,

My only constant companion

Old furniture and chains

provide an unlikely income stream

Free to air satellite channels a welcome diversion

Enough oil in my lamp and

More time than is strictly necessary.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Political map only, Leitrim also stretches into parts of Roscommon.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"While many estates were wasting from neglect by absentees, Leitrim's suffered from close patronage."

David Thomson, 'Woodbrook'.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Leitrim

Cutting your own hair

Signing your own name

Dancing on uneven surfaces

Pipe Dreaming

Folk memories

And time, lots of time.
