Katy's PathMy story is different from many other people in that I was happy in my previous school and did not suffer any bullying or anything like that. I had been at my school for about 7 years when my mum and I decided that we wanted a change of scene following the death of my dad in 03 and decided to move house. We told the school that we were going to move. Moving on a year (yes 1 year on!!) we finally found a house that we really liked and decided to go for. We thought that the move to the house would tie in with the start date of my new school but we then had the survey (when the house is looked at to see if it has any problem's structurally) and we found out that the house had a major structural problem which couldn't be sorted without a LOT of time and money being spent on it!! This was not what we had hoped for!! I then went for a day at the school and hated it. This was another set back because the new term at my old school was about to start and since we had told them that we were moving my mum got onto the computer to look at other options for my schooling. That was when we found the Education Otherwise website and realised that I could be schooled at home. This was fantastic news and after my mum did a lot of background reading and research we decided that this was the path we wanted to follow. I have now been Home Schooling happily for over a year. And I plan to continue!! But, I was always (nearly always) the smartest kid in class. This is both a blessing and a curse.Kids in primary school used to flick pencils at me for knowing all the answers and 'being a SWOT (whatever one of those is?)'. They also used to flick pencils at me when I wouldn't tell them the answers (it's what they call 'a lose-lose situatuion' I believe). The final straw was when I hit high school age, walking through those massive buildings, I just couldn't cope (I have a condition called Dyspraxia, which means that I get very tired, very easily). I ended up having an infection behind my eye, called 'Orbital Cellulitis (not the cellulitus you see in celeb mags!!)'. This basically meant that, worse case scenario, I would die or at least lose my site in one eye. I stayed in Hospital for a week on drip fed anti-biotics. When the Doctors and Nurses were happy I was okay, they gave me another weeks worth of anti-biotics to take at home. Luckily I came away alive, and with both eyes working!! We tried once more at school, this time in Lancaster, same sort of thing happened, I ended up having a lot of time of school and poor exam results for it. As I said before, that was the last straw, we had known about HE and EO before, so we decided to go for that!! And so now here I am, happily educated from Home. My Mum is an Educational Researcher, specialising in alternatives to school, and I'm relativly active in the educational community.
