Holywell Pond

Location: North of Holywell Village, Grid Reference NZ319752 Car Parking at Nearby Housing Estate.Turn east off the A192 in Holywell Village, walk along the narrow path between the houses and then along field margin.

The pond is a subsidence pond which is surrounded by, grassland, reedbeds, and a wood. It has two feeding stations one either side of the members hide. Blue Tits, Great Tits, Chaffinches, Greenfinches, Bullfinches, Blackbirds, Wrens, Robins, Dunnocks, Water Rails, Mallards and many other speices can be seen here. On the water and grassland good numbers of wintering geese can be seen joined by Wigeonand Goldeneye. Passage speices include Greenshank and Green Sandpiper. Its a great site! This reserve is owned by Northumberland Wildlife Trust.

Also in Dene and surrounding farmland were Linnet, Yellowhammer, Whiethroat, Skylark, Female Sparrowhawk, 2 Grey Partridge, Woodpigeon, Jackdaw, Rook, Lapwing, and a Harris Hawk on the soar near the obelisk

After scanning most of the suitable fields in the area I headed back to the Pond hoping for the Snow Goose to have joined the roost, I was right, it was amongst the 25 Greylags on the Pond. Also about, 1 Woodcock, 4 Snipe, 35+ Tufted, 7+ Goldeneye, and a skein of nearly 150 Pink Footed Geese, first flying high over pond, and 5 minutes later, landing, was a good sight theres just something about roosts.

Sadly today when we arrived for our sunday session the hide door had been kicked open with the hide completely trashed, and grafitied. I left a message for the wildlife trust and thankfully the day after most mess had been cleared, just needs a lick of paint and a new door. On a good note the little shits who trashed it missed the new feeding sation, which has been provided by the trust.

Well I only had a half day at school, so I decided to get some lunch and have a bike down to Holywell as the weather was glorious, as entering there was Starling and House Sparrow in the hedge row. I noticed NWT SENSE project (see home page) please fill in a survey or email your ideas. As reaching the hide i heard my first Grasshopper Warbler for this year, it was too the right of the hide in the willow, along with Sedge Warblerand a Reed Warbler. On the pond there was 8 Mallards, 2 Cormorants, 2 Pair of Tufted Duck, 2 Pair Pochard, Pair of Shoveler, Pair of Greyalg, 4 Grey Heron, 1 Great Crested Grebe taking nest material into reeds in aby to right of hide, Little Grebe, 2 Great Black Backed Gulls and 1 Lesser. feeding station was empty due to us not being there last sunday but I filled them with what seed as there, soon Greenfinch, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Dunnock, Blackbird and Chaffinch were present. Other birds around included, Skylark, lapwing, Woodpigeon, Carrion Crow, Female Kestrel on the soar, Jackdaw, Chiff Chaff, Willow Warbler, and the Musket Sparrowhawk displaying in woods opposite hide. Public end, male Garganey was sleeping the grass, 6 Tufted, 1 Cormorant, Pair of Canada Geese with 5 young (still fluffy yellow), 1 Redshank, a few lapwings and an Oystercatcher. There was a few birders knocking about, had a nice chat, and they told me there was some White Throats down at the rack so off I went... Continues on Other sites page.

Feeding Station: Wren, Blackbird, Robin, Chaffinch, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Dunnock, A Male Blackcap. Musket soaring above Obelisk, A Female Sparrowhawk chasing Pigeons, possibly catching one out of sight, large number of Swallow, Sand Martin and House Martin, Woodpigeon, Crow and Magpie present, A Malle Pheasant, Chiff Chaff singing, Skylark singing.

6 shelduck, displaying and fighting, Great Crested Grebe pair displaying, 100+ Greylag flew down for roost, Canada goose seems to be preparing/on a nest on the island with other guarding, Chiff Chaff, 2 Pair Gadwall, 1 Pair Teal, 2 Pair of Little Grebe (calling), young Rabbits and buck rabbit fighting/playing in feeding station, Water Rail heard, Lesser Black Backed Gull.

8 Mallards, 5 Gadwall ( 2 pair + 1 male), Pair of Resident Mute Swans, 11 Canada Geese, 3 Great Crested Grebes established pair chasing single, also displaying but not quite penguin dance, 1 Moorhen, 34 Tufted Duck, 12 Pochard, 1 Male Shoveler, 3 Goldeneye, Large numbers of Greylags flying over (300+), Common Gull, Herring Gull, Black Headed Gull, Great Black Backed Gull, Lapwing, Feeding Station busy with Blue Tit, Great Tit, Dunnock, Chaffinch, and also the first Chiff Chaff of the Year, Woodpigoen, Carrion Crow, Cock Pheasant, Skylark singing, 1 Cormorant, 2 Teal and a Robin.

Cloudy and Drizzling

 

I had a 3 hour free today so decided to bike to Holywell, as i arrived biking down the track towards the key hide, a female Sparrowhawk was flying in front of me, the pond held, 3 Great Crested Grebes, 4 Little Grebe, 1 Pair of Mute Swan, 29 Tufted Duck, 18 Coot, 1 Redshank, 18 Mallard, 3 Goldeneye, 8 Pochard, 6 Moorhen, 1 Grey Heron, 74 Greylag, 6 Snipe at Public end, also 2 Oystercatcher and 1 Curlew, 2 Shelduck, 1 Sky Lark was singing in the cut field on the reserve, the female Sparrowhawk returned to the feediong station at 11:55, there was a few Gulls on the pond, but not as many as normal, Common Gull, Herring Gull, Black Headed, and Great Black Backed Gull, feeding station was quite busy with Blue Tits, Grea Tits, Dunnock, Chaffinch, Robin, Blackbird, and a cock Pheasant, a few Lapwing were flying overhead and as i left a pair of Gadwall landed.

4 Great Crested Grebe, one bonding pair, 1 Little Grebe, 20 Wigeon, 7 Gadwall, 11 Canada + 1 Greylag, Lapwing, 10 Mallard, 44+ Tufted, 23+ Pochard, 6 Goldeneye, 2 Skeins of about 100 Greylag Geese, 18+ Coot, 2 Moorhen, Feeding station busy with regualrs plus Male Reed Bunting, other birds included, Rook, Woodpigeon and a singing Skylark.

Misty, couldn't see to other side of the pond

Resident Mute Swan Pair, 2 Canada Geese, 1 injured Greylag Goose (broken wing), Grey Heron, 26+ Mallard Mostly in feeding station, 6+ Pochard, 4 Wigeon making a big fuss on the east side of pond,  47+ Tufted, 4 Goldeneye, Black Headed, Common, Herring, lesser Black Backed Gull, Great Black Backed Gulls, 3 Moorhen, 18+ Coot, Feeding station quiet until we filled the feeders, first to appear was 3 Robins, shorty followed by Dunnocks, a Single Wren, Blackbirds, Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Single Male Reed Bunting feeding on the table, Blue Tits, Great Tits, Starling flock was present in village, other birds seen included, Woodpigeon, and Magpies. Also a field vole which is now resident in the feeding station was a good spot, trying to get seeds and bread from the ground.
