YAM (Young Appalachian Musicians)

Music can change the life of a child

Welcome to the YAM web site

We hope you will help support Yam as we teach students to carry this program forward.

young appalachian musicians

YAM was successful last year at Holly Springs Elementary School. This year Pickens Middle School is included and now more than 90 students signed up for the program. Betty McDaniel a teacher and librarian at Holly Springs Elementary School researched the program along with Dan & Norma Hendricks. These folks worked together and were able to make the program available in Pickens SC.

If you are interested in having this program in your school please contact Mrs. McDaniel for workshop dates.

YAM is an after school program for 3rd through 8th grade students and uses local musicians as instructors.  At present they are Dan & Norma Hendricks, Lewis Crowe, Don Noonan, Al Osteen, Gene Haney and Ed Bolt.

Instruments

Fiddles, guitars, banjos and mandolins were purchased from Celestial Mountain Music in Brevard, North Carolina. Mary Gordon is the owner.

Several instruments were donated by very generous individuals.
