We hold practical work sessions every month, except for one in the summer when we have a break and enjoy an 'Away Day' together. All sessions run from 10am to 1pm.
We meet outside the old brick and flint barn adjacent to the western entrance to the Roedale allotments, which is accessed from the Ditchling Road via the road to the Lower Roedale cottages. To enable as many people to come as possible the sessions are held on alternate Saturdays and Sundays on the first weekend of every month. All members and others are welcome to join us. There is no obligation to stay for the whole morning or to attend every work day: it is entirely up to you how many hours you do or how often you come, but you will always be made very welcome. The work is not too strenuous and we always stop for a break with tea, coffee and biscuits provided. The programme of work forms a part of the overall management plan for the Local Nature Reserve,
of which the woods are a part. The work varies from year to year as different needs arise, but it usually includes glade clearance, thinning of the fast-growing ash and sycamore trees to help with the regeneration of the beech trees, the planting of native bulbs and whips (young trees) as well as path maintenance and the never ending collection of litter. The work is carried out under the guidance of David Larkin our Ranger from the Brighton & Hove Countryside Service and Lesley Brown our Project Officer, both of whom can offer help and advice on using the tools effectively and safely. The tools and strong work gloves are provided - all you need is suitable footwear, old clothes and your enthusiasm!
