COMMONLY USED WORDS IN POKER:
- AGGRESSIVE: To
repeatedly place bets and/or raise.
- BET: To put money into
the pot (on the table) according to the value of the cards you have
got.
- BLINDS: The amount of
money every player will have to put in the pot to join in on the
game. Normal is one half and one full blind at each round (e.g.
$0,25 and $0,50) plus a full blind when you join the table.
- CALL: To match a
previous bet from a player in an earlier position to stay in the
game.
- CHECK: To see the next
card or at the end your opponents' cards without placing a further
bet in the round. Do NEVER FOLD IF YOU CAN CHECK unless you have
been raising bets on cards of no value and don't want the other
players to see this.
- DEALER: The one sharing
out all cards to the individual players.
- DEALER BUTTON: A button or mark (in online poker often marked with the letter D) to show who is dealer during the current
game. The player to the dealers left gets the first card. The
dealer will also be the last one to give bets during the
round.
- DEUCES: Cards with the
value 2
- FOLD: To stop playing
your hand and not to be a part of the betting round any more.
- FLOP: The first 3 cards
shown on table (before the turn of 1 card next and river of 1 card
last)
- HAND: You are given two
starting cards to play with. The table will show first 3 cards (the
Flop), then 1 more (the Turn) and finally 1 more (the River). Any
best combination of 5 cards (e.g. 7 7 7 2 2 will be a full house of
sevens filled with deuces) will be looked at as your hand.
- LIMP IN: Not to raise
the blinds even though your hand is made out of two very good cards,
like a top pair.
- LOOSE: To play small
card combinations and/or cards of a too low a value to see the flop
too often.
- MUCK: Not to allow other
players to see your two cards on hand after you have lost a full
betting round. Cards cannot be mucked if another player has paid to
see your cards (called) or if everybody has checked.
- POSITION: Where you are
sitting compared to the dealers button at each and every individual
round.
- POT: The combined amount
of money being bet by all players.
- RAISE: To bet more than
the player before you has already bet during the current betting
round.
- RIVER: The last card
shown on table (after the flop of 3 cards first and turn of 1
card)
- STARTING HAND: The value
of the two cards you have got which will determine whether it's
worth a bet or not.
- STACK: The amount of
chips somebody has got.
- SUIT: The actual kind of
card, Club, Diamond, Heart or Spade.
- TIGHT: A player who is
not taking part in the round unless he or she has an outstanding
chances of winning.
- TURN: The 4th card shown
on table (after the flop of 3 cards and before the river of 1
card)
- VALUE: The value of your
cards compared to your statistical winning chance during the actual
betting round, compared to the money already in the pot. This
again can be compared to how many times you will win or lose
spending the actual amount of money you will be betting compared to
the actual amount of money you might win. The calculation of all
this will state whether your hand is of a higher or lower
value.
