The 2004 Around New Zealand Air Race is now over and what a great event it has been. Detailed information and results can be found at www.airrace.co.nz
The visit to Hokitika by the competitors and supporters was fantastic and thoroughly enjoyed by all who took part. Aircraft began arriving around 11am on Tuesday 6 April and the lineup alongside the runway was a magical sight. Our local much sought after delicacy of whitebait was eagerly devoured by the 200 plus visitors and, planes and competitors alike refueled, they were ready for the next stage.
The weather appeared fine when the first aircraft took off for their journey over the Southern Alps to Wigram but unfortunately only 5 competitors made it through and the rest had to return to Hokitika for the night. This was a real bonus for the Aero Club members who were able to spend plenty of time checking out the visiting aircraft and crew were able to spend a relaxing evening in town.

Wednesday morning dawned fine, sunny and calm (typical Hokitika weather) and more stocks of whitebait miraculously appeared for the breakfast feast and disappeared very rapidly. A quick route change by race officials and competitors headed south to in time to finish at Wanaka prior to the start of Warbirds Over Wanaka.

The Aero Club hangar was the ideal place for eating breakfast, catching up with old friends, race briefing, and for studying charts.
Warbirds Over Wanaka will follow the Around New Zealand Air Race on 9, 10, 11 April (Easter weekend) with the usual fantastic display to delight aviators and enthusiasts alike and is described in the brochure as "the most spectacular warbird airshow ever held in the southern hemisphere". This is an international airshow with something for everyone - the complete entertainment package for the whole family. There is an official website for this event at www.warbirdsoverwanaka.com.
