The BA&N is to be constructed in an ongoing manner as time and finances permit, however the long term plan is to complete the track plan as shown here. This will provide a continuous run over a distance of some 300 metres (980 feet). Minimum mainline curve radius will be 4.57 metres (15 feet) and maximum gradients will be 2.5% (1 in 40). The two passing sidings in the stations will allow for a limited amount of operational interest including the possibility of concurrently running trains in opposite directions with some suitable means of signalling. (Click map for a larger version) These track parameters will certainly test the locomotives however this is very much a conscious decision on my part as I much prefer to see and hear them working hard rather than leisurely cruising around a level track. I have had the pleasure and the privilege to drive around quite a few different tracks belonging to clubs, societies and private parties. Some big, some small, some fairly straight and fast, others slow and twisty but one thing that always strikes me as being a good way to induce rapid boredom is a lack of variation of curve radii. This is purely a personal opinion, but I will be aiming for a variation of curves and lengths of straight track in order to give the line a little character and interest from a drivers point of view and hopefully avoid the "giant trainset" feeling. |
