Winfield, Kansas- home to the Blue Grass Music Festival but not of it. If anyone is planning on travelling extra cheap to/from the Southwest to/from the NorthEast or travelling north or south through the Midwest, you'll want to make note of Winfield, Kansas as a temporary rest stop. The public library at 605 college street has almost unlimited internet access in the morning and evening, id required. Across the street is the recreation center with free hot showers. Adjacent to the library is an abandoned college dormitory that could easily be squatted if you wanted to but the public park next to it would prolly be better. Last but not least, at 320 College is a food pantry open M-F, 8-11AM.
Lawrence, Kansas -home of the "your dollar is your vote" sticker- a reminder from liberals of what class votes the most under capitalism. Its a big college town 40 miles West of Kansas City. There are lots of trendy restaurants and bakeries in the older East Side so plenty of hot dumpsters. (1) Plus there is a relative abundance of soup kitchens. Jubillee Cafe, Salvation Army , LINK (221 W. 10th, t,tr,sa,su,1:30-2:30), all coordinate so there should be at least one free meal a day. On Thursdays there's a free veggie lunch at the ECM,1204 Oread Ave. As for shelter, there isn't any in the Summer. If you're hitchiking and want to get out of the cold at night a good place might be the Java Break coffee house on E. 8th that is open 24 hours a day. Also, in Room 452 at the Kansas Union there is a 24 hour a day computer lab open to the public during the fall and spring semesters.
