In the eleventh year of the Meiji Jidai, a funny-looking little man wandered into Tokyo. He was very short and delicately built, looking almost like a woman. He had long auburn hair and huge violet eyes. He bore a cross-shaped scar on his left cheek. Quite suddenly he was attacked by a young shihondai named Kamiya Kaoru. When she hit him, he went all swirly-eyed and could only reply with "Orooooooo". This wanderer's name was Himura Kenshin.
Kenshin teamed up with Kaoru and stopped two brothers who were sullying the name of Kamiya Kasshin Ryu and of Hitokiri Battousai. Kamiya Kasshin Ryu was Kaoru's father's kenjutsu, or sword art. Hitokiri Battousai was Kenshin's former title, for ten years earlier, he'd been an assassin for the Isshin Shishi during the Bakumatsu no Douran (war).
Kaoru didn't care who Kenshin had been or what he'd done before. She just wanted him to stay with her at her dojo. Since Kenshin didn't have any money or any other place to go, he gladly accepted. Soon they made other friends such as fiery-tempered Myoujin Yahiko, the freeloading Sagara Sanosuke, and Takani Megumi, a foxy woman with amorous ambitions toward Kenshin.
Together the group face many evil people, most of whom wanted to force Kenshin to go back to being the Hitokiri. If Kenshin were to kill, he would be Ruruouni no more and would be Hitokiri once agan.
Altogether it's a very exciting and romantic story. All the main characters get good development and we get to watch them as they grow into themselves. Kenshin doesn't really need to develop too much, as he's already a great swordsman, but it's fun to watch Sano and Yahiko grow up and turn into honorable fighters. It's also fun to watch Kaoru and Megumi fight over Kenshin's affections. Actually though Megumi and Sano seem destined for each other, in my opinion.
