Lilith Cylinder Seal
This replica of a black stone seal displays a somewhat complex scene....
A priest standing in front of a burning altar opposite a seated goddess with outstretched hands with a star above her as a sign of her divinity. Behind this goddess is a woman spinning beneath a tree using an ancient spindle whorl, the tree itself is bent over her as if covering her. The scene could be part of the Lilith myth, with Gilgamesh as "Inanna's brother chooses to pull up the Huluppa tree being infested with a serpent in its roots, with the Imdugud (or Anzu) bird on top and Lilith in her house below. This myth portrays an attempt to prevent the tree from being turned into a throne or bed for Inanna. This scene is rare as is the image of a woman spinning. What little is known of Lilith, portrayed as Inanna's siater and at other times her rival goes on to tell of her taking the tree to the city of Uruk for Inanna.
Another alternative would be of a rare story of Uttu, the goddess of weaving and vegetation.
The seal is resin cast 30 x 21mm. Replica from a private collection.

Small, very early cylinder Seal from the dawn of writing/seals c3500 - 2900BC. Found near Ash Sharqat, Iraq. The seals were usually of soft stone, usually chlorite or calcite, these simple geometric designs common in this period were usually made with a cutting wheel. 17mm x 15mm.

Hittite Stamp Seal -

14th C BC - God King Tudhaliyas II -
Geometric styled stamp seals such as this were used on bales and storage jars issued from the royal palace where as cylinder seals were used for all other sealings. This was necessitated due to the small size of the clay bullae that were applied to the knots of the ties that were affixed around the bales and necks of the jars which would then be sealed with this style of seal.

Jar Handle - Seal Impressions
Throughout the ancient Mediterranean and Near East pottery jars would often have handles that allowed them to be lifted, as well as a means by which to "tie down" the stopped that sealed the jar. However many of these jars also had seal impressions on one or more of their handles as a means of identifying the owner of the jar or its contents. In Judea from around the time of King Hezekiah a series of impressed seal handles have been found termed "LMLK" (which means "belonging to the King"). It is thought these seals indicated that Hezekiah may have been stocking up his cities in preparation for an attack from the north namely from King Sennacherib of Assyria. These seals bore a number of different designs, and came from a number of different cities. To read more click here.
