The early pre-Mattel Felicity dolls are very different from the current Mattel Felicitys. The picture to the right, compliments of Hostboard (I believe from AGTeacher), shows the most obvious changes. The pre-Mattel German-made Lissie is on the left; Mattel China Lissie is on the right. As you can see, the eyes and hair is very different, and the face mold and eyebrows are also subtly changed.

"Rose Garden" gown- a pink cotton rose-print striped gown with white hair ribbon, shift, wool socks (pretty heavy), and buckle shoes. The earliest Felicity gowns are tagged "Made in W. Germany for Pleasant Co. 1986." The "Meet Accessories" used to include a cap trimmed with rose ribbon and a coral bead necklace along with the other items. The purse was reversible. |
"Traveling" Gown- a lavender taffeta-like striped gown with embroidered flowers on it, white hair ribbon, shift, lighter socks (not wool), and buckle shoes. This gown used to be sold as a separate outfit with part of the "meet accessories"- the mob cap and choker. |
Josefina was introduced in 1997, right before Mattel took over the company. There are a limited number of dolls whose clothes are tagged 1997 "Made in Germany." Whether they were actually made in Germany or not is open for debate, since it seems from other dolls that the dolls were made in China after 1993. It is unclear whether these German-tagged dolls were made early on but never released until 1997 or if they were actually made in China. That said, there are some differences I've noticed between the 1997 pre-Mattel Josefina doll and the Mattel Josefina. These differences are based on both my own dolls (I had a 2004 Josefina before my current '97 Josie) and others. Additionally, some batches over the years have had problems with grey-looking vinyl or lumpy wigs, so this is something to be careful about on ebay.
On the left is Mattel Josefina, on the right 1997 PM Josefina. Note that Mattel Josefina has a different face shape and higher eyebrows, as well as different eyelashes.

Kirsten has changed quite a bit over the years. She was one of the first three dolls that Pleasant Company released in their original catalog, which featured only the three dolls, their school and Christmas sets, and their beds, trunks, and nightgowns.

Hair |
Relatively coarse, long (to her bum), and a very light ash blonde. Bangs are relatively long- they get in her eyes if you're not careful. The back of her head has lots and lots of tiny 1" clipped hairs between her braids, very apparent when you pull her hair into her traditional looped braids. See the picture. |
Smoother than the German hair, but still coarser than Mattel's hair. Bangs are a little shorter now. Still long, and a light honey blonde. Her hair still ahs the little clipped hairs, but far less of them and the pattern on the back of her head is not as distinct. |
The hair is a rich honey blonde and is silky and very long (past her bum). Fewer clipped hairs, but they are still there. |

Eyes |

Eyelashes |

|
Face Shape |
Face is more narrow and more three-dimensional. Chubby cheeks. |
Slightly more round/full and less defined. |
Quite distinct from the early pre-Mattel dolls- face is substantially broader and flatter, and the eyes seem farther apart and a different shape. |

Meet Outfit and Accessories |
The most distinct changes have been the socks and shoes. The socks on the first dolls were woolen, thick, and a more open knitted design. They were very authentic, looked hand-knitted, and lacked distinct toes or heels. The shoes were soft leather and lacked any cardboard soles. They tied with yarn. |
The dress fabric pattern has changed over the years, but only very slightly. You'd have to do a side-by-side comparison to see any difference at all. The flowers are slightly different in color and the pattern is more uniform in the later calico dresses. I believe this happened around the early to mid 1990s. I'm not sure when the sock and shoe changes, outlined under the Mattel section, occured. I have not noticed other differences, but I have not been able to compare the Mattel Meet Accessories with my PM set. |
The socks are not wool, are thinner, and tightly woven. They are obviously machine made and they have distinct toes and heels. The shoes now have a cardboard sole insert. |
You can see the differences quite well. On the left is a 1986 white-bodied Kirsten, made in Germany. On the right is a pre-Mattel, mid-1990s Kirsten, tan-bodied and made in China. Their face shape is slightly different (not as different as the Mattel Kirsten), and WB Kirsten has pale blonde eyebrows, whereas tan-bodied Kirsten has dark blonde eyebrows. WB Kirsten has long, soft blonde eyelashes. TB Kirsten's eyelashes are not so long, but are also soft blonde.
Below: The first picture is WB Kirsten, the second is tan-bodied Kirsten. Note the differences in face shape, eye color, and hair texture and color. Kirsten's eyes seem to get lighter over the years- Mattel Kirsten's eyes look quite a bit lighter than my WB Kirsten, and there is even a difference between WB and tan-bodied.
Note that the WB doll has very light blonde hair and lots of clipped hairs in the back between the braids. Even when she was new, when you let her hair down, it was obvious that WB Kirsten's hair was meant to be in braids, because the back was quite thin of long hairs. The tan-bodied doll has darker blonde hair and more of it. It is also wilder than the Mattel dolls, which tend to have thinner, silkier wigs.
Kirstens from the side view. The tan-bodied Kirsten was also taller than my WB.
The meet dresses. PM China dress on the left; WB German dress on the right. Note that the German dress is a richer blue color and the pattern is not so uniform (see close-up of fabric).
The China made dress is on the left. It is not as rich a color and the flowers are in rows, compared to the more random design of the German dress.
Kirsten's German-made WB socks are on her leg, the other sock is a China-made tan-bodied sock. Note that the original socks were lighter in color and looked hand-knitted. They are also rougher in texture. Here is also a good shot of the original German shoe; there is no cardboard sole insert.
Addy was first introduced in 1993 and was the second doll in the collection after the first three (Kirsten, Samantha, and Molly). The earliest Addy dolls were manufactured in Germany and their clothes are tagged 1986 W. Germany. There was a very limited amount of these dolls, and the rest, even very early Addys are tagged 1993 China. There are differences between the China and German Addy dolls, as the pictures below show. It is worth noting that Addy's vinyl coloring can change quite a bit, depending on the batch, and Addy dolls can range in color from light brown to a very dark brown.
| German | Pre-Mattel | Mattel | |
| Hair | Very textured and long (past her bum). The texture is quite authentic but makes styling difficult. The hair is very poufy, coarse, and wiry. These dolls are hard to find in mint condition because the hair, in being played with by children, is often quite thin and tangled by now. | Similar to the German dolls. I've seen some Addy dolls from both the German and PM periods with fewer rows of hair on the wig, and some with more. This does not seem to correspond to date of manufactue- maybe it is a factory difference? | The hair has been altered so it is more silky and less textured. Thus, it is less authentic but easier for children to style and brush. Whether or not that is a good thing depends on personal preference. |
| Eyes | Dark brown with a pin-wheel design | Same | Same |
| Eyelashes | Dark brown and soft | Dark brown and soft | Black and stiff |
| Face Shape | More narrow and three-dimensional. The nose is smaller and the cheeks chubbier to the front. | More broad and round than the German dolls. | Noticeably more broad and round than the pre-Mattel and German dolls. The nose also is broader. |
| Cloth Body | Dark brown | Dark brown | Dark brown |
| Vinyl Texture | Soft | Soft | Hard |
| Vinyl Color | Ranges in color, but seems to be consistently on the darker end of the spectrum for Addy. Rosy cheeks and lips. | Ranges in color, but seems to be frequently on the darker end of the spectrum. Some seemed a bit grey to me. Often has rosy cheeks and lips. | Ranges in color, but seems to frequently be on the lighter end of the spectrum. |
| Meet Outfit and Accessories | There are a few prototype dresses floating around out there that have a flower pattern on pink rather than the stripes. However, the two Germany Addy dolls I have encountered had the striped dresses, just like the rest of the Addys through the years. I have not noticed any changes in the drawers, shoes, or socks. The original straw bonnet had a different pattern to the straws in the back than the later PM ones, but the change is inconsequential. The biggest change is that Addy's water gourd used to be a real gourd. | The water gourd for the early PM dolls was still a real gourd. The later gourds were plastic. This may have happened as a result of some gourds rotting over time, although my water gourd is still fine and has lasted 13 years. | Water gourd is plastic. |
China-made Addy, dress tagged 1993, on left in both pictures. German-made Addy, dress tagged 1986, on right in both pictures. Neither had body tags; tags were only in the dress and drawers.
Samantha was one of the first dolls introduced by Pleasant Company in 1986. She has changed substantially over the years, and the German Samantha dolls are quite different than all the others. See the pictures below for comparisons between the German and pre-Mattel Samantha dolls. The German dolls tend to be highly sought after and command much higher prices. My own opinion, having bought and sold many Samantha dolls in the last couple years, is that the German dolls are distinctively high quality and one of the most beautiful dolls Pleasant Company ever produced, though Samantha (in all her incarnations) has been considered one of the prettiest dolls throughout the years and has consistently been the most popular.
| German | Pre-Mattel | Mattel | |
| Hair | The German wigs are very distinctive from the other periods of manufacture. They are very long (past her bum) and quite curly (loose ringlets) if they have not been damaged through brushing or styling. Their coloring is very different- it is a light brown rather than dark and is very life-like. The bangs are very long and brush up against Sam's eyelashes. The hair is silky. | The early PM dolls (pre 1995) vary in their wigs: some have the German wigs with the lighter color and more curls and some have the later wigs with dark color and more waves. By about the mid 1990s all the dolls seem to have the newer wigs, which are a darker medium-brown in color and less distinct curls (more waves), along with shorter bangs. | The Mattel dolls have dark brown wigs with the shorter bangs, and the hair is in larger curls that are more wavy than ringlets. |
| Eyes | The German eyes are distinct as well. They are glass and speckled with various shades of brown, so they have a real depth to them that is not present in the later dolls. The German glass eyes are ALWAYS with the very long, curled eyelashes described below. |
The early PM dolls vary in their eye color and lashes: some have the German eyes with very long lashes while others have the later PM eyes with shorter lashes. This does not correspond to hair color. I've seen early PM dolls with German eyes and newer wigs, and ones with newer eyes and Germany wigs. Between the early 1990s and 1995 there are dolls with an eye color that is also speckled, but different in color from the German ones- there are some orange specks in there and the eyes are brighter and less life-like. After about 1995, the eyes change again to a brown that is still patterned (not pin-wheel) but more uniform in color and without all the specks of the early ones. |
The Mattel eyes are like the late PM ones. |
| Eyelashes | Very distinctive- the eyelashes are brown and are very long and curl upwards. | Early PM dolls may have the German eyes with long eyelashes. Otherwise they have the other kind of PM eyes with shorter, soft, brown eyelashes. | Dark and stiff. |
| Face Shape | More narrow than the later dolls, with chubbier cheeks. | More round/full and broad. See the changes noted for Kirsten- they share the same face mold. | See the changes noted for Kirsten- they share the same face mold. |
| Cloth Body | White | Early PM dolls have light tan, late PM dolls have a slightly darker shade of light tan. | Same as late PM dolls. |
| Vinyl Texture | Very soft and squishy- even more than Kirsten or Molly from what I've seen. | Soft but not as soft as the German. | Hard. |
| Vinyl Color | Peachy with rosy cheeks and lips. Eyebrows are relatively light. | Ranging from peachy to sort of pale tan. | More white/pale. |
| Meet Outfit and Accessories | The meet dress doesn't seem to change much over the years. The German ones are tagged 1986 W. Germany. The rest of the meet outfit doesn't appear to change either. The meet accessories do change quite a bit. German dolls come with a real Indianhead penny (Molly German dolls, by the way, come with a real steel penny). The purse is very soft velveteen with a white satin lining. | The early PM dolls come with the real Indianhead penny. The later PM dolls come with a reproduction penny (a copy, not real) and the purse changes somewhere along the line to be less soft (the fabric feels less high quality) and the satin lining is pink. | Same as late PM dolls. |

I have received requests to includes some pictures of Molly (though I only own a re-wigged WB one) and a comparison chart like the other dolls who were around in the Pleasant Co. days. The comparison photos are compliments of Jean C. I have only ever had pre-Mattel and WB Molly dolls. I have not seen a Mattel Molly in person except at AGPLA, so the chart is entirely what Jean C observed plus my own observations of the pictures. If you have comparison photos and facts concerning Mattel Molly compared to either German-made WB or PM Molly, please email me!
