Dear Friend,

પ્રીય મીત્ર,

It is our endeavor to seek friendly contacts and to strengthen those already established, in addition to contribute to the development and spread of Gujarati language.

નવો પરીચય કેળવવાનો,  પરીચીતો સાથે સંબંધ દૃઢ અને  ઉંડો કરવાનો, સાથોસાથ ગુજરાતી ભાષાના વ્યાપ અને વીકાસ માટેનો આ અમારો ઉપક્રમ છે.

Computer has made available unique facilities and e-mail has rendered maintenance of contacts quick and easy, besides providing key to open doors of new friendships. Taking advantage of these tools, we intend to embark upon our projects  'e-Bha'rti' and 'Sunday Mahefil'.

કૉમ્પ્યુટરે ખાસ્સી સવલતો ઉપલબ્ધ કરી છે. ઈ- મેઈલે મીત્રો, પરીચીતો, સ્નેહીઓ સાથે સંપક જાળવવાના અને નવા મીત્રો મેળવવાના જાણે  દરવાજા જ ખોલી દીધા છે ! તેનો લાભ લઈ  'ઈ-ભારતી'  તથા  'સન્ડે મહેફીલ'  ઉપક્રમ હાથ ધરવાનું અમે વીચાર્યું છે.

One can send e-mail in Gujarati script. It takes time and needs a specific Font. But there is no uniform Font so far. Though a new system called UNICODE is being standardized for Gujarati, and other Indian Languages by all computer manufactures and the Government of India. But God only knows when all professional Gujarati Script designers and software producers and the users thereof will accept it as a standard !

ગુજરાતી લીપીમાં ઈ-મેઈલ થઈ શકે છે, પરંતુ તેમાં સમય થોડો વધુ જાય છે અને ફોન્ટનો સવાલ રહે છે. ગુજરાતી ફોન્ટ અંગે એકસુત્રતા યુનીફોર્મીટી હજી સુધી સ્થપાઈ શકી નથી. જો કે કમ્પ્યુટર વાપરનારા, બનાવનારા અને  સરકારી કામકાજ માટે યુનીકોડ નામના એક નવા સર્વસામાન્ય  ફોન્ટ તૈયાર થઈ રહ્યા છે જેમાં ગુજરાતી તેમ જ ભારતની બધી જ ભાષાઓના ફોન્ટનો સમાવેશ થાય છે. પણ તે તો કુદરત જાણે કે ક્યારે તે તૈયાર થશે, સોફ્ટવેર બનાવનારા અને વાપરનારાઓ બધા એને સ્વીકારશે કે કેમ !!

Further many Gujaratis settled abroad can speak and understand Gujarati but are not familiar with Gujarati script. They cannot avail of this facility. This is also the case with Gujarati families settled in other states of India.

વળી ગુજરાતી બોલી શકતા અને સમજી શકતા પરંતુ; ગુજરાતી લીપી નહીં જાણતા હોય તેવા મુળગુજરાતના વતનીઓ આ સવલતનો લાભ લઈ શકે તેમ નથી; ખાસ કરીને વીદેશમાં અને કેટલેક અંશે ભારતનાં અન્ય રાજયોમાં સ્થળાંતર કરી સ્થીર થયેલા ગુજરાતીઓ.
 

e-Bha'rati is Romanized Gujarati. Some letters like: "આ, છ, ટ, ઠ, ડ, ઢ, ણ, ળ " for which there are no independent letters in English alphabet can be distinctly identified in e-Bha'rati as:

ઈ-ભારતી એ રોમનાઈઝ્ડ ગુજરાતી છે. અંગ્રેજી વણમાળામાં  જેને   માટે   સ્વતંત્ર   વણ  નથી તેવા, "આ, છ, ટ, ઠ, ડ, ઢ, ણ, ળ " જેવા વણો, એકમાત્ર 'સીંગલ અવતરણ ચીહ્ન' જેવી નીશાનીની મદદથી સરળતાથી  અને તેય શીફ્ટ કીના કશાય ઉપયોગ વીના વ્યક્ત કરી શકાય  છે. જેમ કે :

can also be distinctly expressed with the use of only one symbol 'Single Apostrophe" without the use of Shift Key.

We wish to e-mail an interesting, lucid  piece  from  Gujarati  literature  (of the size of half to three fourth A-4 size paper ) in  e-Bha'rati every week so as to reach you on week end days.

અમે  મીત્રોને દર અઠવાડીયે, વીક એન્ડના દીવસે મળે તેમ, ઈ-મેઈલથી એક પાના જેટલું ગુજરાતી સાહીત્યમાંથી પસંદ કરેલું વાચનક્ષમ અને રસપ્રદ લખાણ  ઈ-ભારતીમાં મોકલવા ઈચ્છીએ છીએ.

Along with it, we shall send original writing in Gujarati script that can be read on Acrobat Reader. This will help you to get acquainted with Gujarati script, if you are not so familiar with it. If you are already familiar with it, you can compare eBha'rati with original. This will help us to have your opinion about e-Bha'rati, any of its shortcomings and your suggestions to remedy them.

તેની સાથોસાથ તે લખાણ ગુજરાતી લીપીમાં પી.ડી.એફ. ફાઈલ બનાવી મોકલીશું, જેથી તમે ફોન્ટ વીના પણ વાંચી શકો અને 'ઈ-ભારતી' સાથે સરખાવી શકો. આનો ફાયદો એ કે, ઈ-ભારતી વીશેનો આપનો પ્રતીભાવ અમને મળે અને તેને વધુ સરળ અને કાયક્ષમ કરી  શકાય. ('ઈ-ભારતી'ની સમજ સાથેની લીખીત યોજના તૈયાર છે. તમે મંગાવી શકો છો.)

Incorporating Gujarati writing in Gujarati script we call 'Sunday Mahefil'. Gujaratis settled abroad perhaps may lack sufficient opportunities to   read Gujarati script with the result that they lose contact with Gujarati language. 'Sunday Mahefil' will provide them opportunity to maintain such contact at least every week.

ગુજરાતી લખાણ ગુજરાતી લીપીમાં સામેલ કરવાના ઉપક્રમને અમે 'સન્ડે મહેફીલ' નામ આપ્યું છે. વીદેશમાં વસતા મુળ ગુજરાતના વતનીઓને ગુજરાતી લખાણ ગુજરાતી લીપીમાં, ઘરબેઠા, કમ સે કમ અઠવાડીયે એકવાર પણ 'સન્ડે મહેફીલ' મારફત મળી રહે તો તેમનો લીપી અને સાહીત્ય જોડેનો સંપર્ક જળવાઈ રહે.

Besides, many linguists and Gujarati literates have come to the conclusion that rules of Gujarati Spellings need reconsideration and revision. The approach of Unza' Jod'an'i Parishad on this issue is fair, reasonable and helpful to the language and needs adoption and encouragement. So we shall follow Unz'a Jod'an'i in 'Sunday Mahefil' writings. Some reputed and widely read Gujarati magazines like Naya'Ma'rg and others follow this Jod'an'i. We earnestly request you to let us know whether you find any difficulty in reading 'Sunday Mahefil' articles on account of spellings.

ગુજરાતી ભાષાની જોડણી વીશે પણ પુનર્વીચારની આવશ્યકતા છે, એમ  ઘણાની  જેમ અમને પણ લાગે છે. ઉંઝા જોડણી પરીષદે આ અંગે જે અભીગમ અપનાવ્યો છે તે સ્તુત્ય, સરાહનીય અને લખાતી ગુજરાતીને સરળ બનાવવામાં ઉપકારક છે. તેથી ગુજરાતી લખાણો ઉંઝા જોડણીમાં આપવા અમે ધાયું છે. નયામાર્ગ જેવાં ઘણાં પ્રગતીશીલ સામયીકો ઉંઝા જોડણીમાં પ્રગટ થાય છે. આ લખાણો આપ સરળતાથી અને કશા અથભ્રમ વીના વાંચી શકો છો કે કેમ તે અંગે આપનો પ્રતીભાવ આપવા અમારી આગ્રહભરી વીનંતી છે.

We sincerely believe and have faith that these two projects will also serve other purposes, equally important - like developing love for good reading, establishing friendships etc.

આ બે ઉપક્રમો મારફત બીજા પણ કેટલાક એટલા જ અગત્યના ઉદ્દેશ, જેવા કે સુવાચન  વડે લોકરુચીની કેળવણી, મૈત્રીવર્તુળનો વીકાસ સાધવો વગેરે પણ બર આવશે એવો અમને વીશ્વાસ છે.

Lastly about FONTS. We and our friends have developed KALAPI, VIJAYA and GURJARI (Gujarati) and KETAN (Hindi) fonts. It is essential to have one uniform FONT for Gujarati script accepted by all. We seek your cooperation for that project too. However , we want to take it up as STAGE-2, when we have established rapport with each other.

છેલ્લે ફોન્ટની વાત. કલાપી, વીજયા, ગુર્જરી અને કેતન ફોન્ટ અમે વીકસાવ્યા છે. ગુજરાતી લીપી માટે સર્વસ્વીકૃત યુનીફોર્મ ફોન્ટ હોય તે જરુરી છે. તે માટેના અમારા પ્રયાસોમાં પણ આપ સહભાગી થાઓ એવી  અમારી ઈચ્છા છે. પરંતુ મીત્રો સાથે આત્મીય પરીચય કેળવાય ત્યાર  બાદ બીજા તબક્કામાં તે કામ હાથ ધરવા વીચાર્યું છે.

We will be pleased to send you the ttf Files of Gujarati fonts"KALAPI, VIJAYA, GURJARI" and Hindi Fonts "KETAN"  if requested. They are very easy to install. Their Phonetic Key Board is easy to remember, too.

આપ ઈચ્છો તો ગુજરાતીના 'કલાપી', 'વીજયા', 'ગુર્જરી' અને હીંદીના 'કેતન' ફોન્ટ મંગાવી શકો છો. તેની ટી.ટી.એફ ફાઈલ મોકલી આપીશું. તે ચાલુ કરવા સાવ સરળ છે, વળી ચારેની કી-બોર્ડની રચના ફોનેટીક છે જેથી તે સરળતાથી યાદ રહી જાય છે.
