If you have never flown R/C aircraft before, it would be beneficial to talk to an experienced pilot so he can reccommend a good trainer plane and radio. You may want the plane at the hobby shop that looks "fast and cool" but your eye-hand coordination will not be ready. Most hobby shops have ARF (Almost Ready to Fly) planes that can be built and set up in less than 2 hours. Some have the radio equipment pre-installed. Don't buy a kit (a bunch of sticks in a box) as you will make mistakes in the beginning, and the psychological attachment between pilot and plane is not so bad.
After you have your plane, and any assembly is done and your batteries are FULLY charged, and you have a valid AMA card, schedule a time with an experienced club member so he can do a proper pre-flight check on your plane. If you purchase a Futaba brand radio system, odds are that a member has a "buddy cord" so his radio and yours can be linked together. He will explain the controls, take-off, trim the plane, and give control to your radio. This may take several flights before you you are allowed to solo. The experience of flying R/C aircraft is exhilarating.
