The original HSM was a record-setting phenomenon. High School Musical started as a Disney Channel Movie, but ended up a $100 million + franchise that includes clothing, accessories, a concert, ice tour, and a much-anticipated sequel!! So, who would have expected less from High School Musical 2?!?!
High School Musical 2's August 17th Premiere has already set a few records and it doesnt take a psychic to foresee even more success to come for both the movie and its stars!!
17.2 million people tuned in to the Friday night premiere of HSM2, which means that it was the biggest basic cable telecast OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!
HSM2 was also Basic Cable's Most Watched TV Movie EVER!!!!!
What can you expect from High School Musical 2? Well, let's start with what you SHOULDNT expect. HSM 2 is not supposed to be a second High School Musical. "What? That Doesnt Make Any Sense?" youre thinking to yourself, well wait a minute!! Let me explain. When Kenny Ortega and the other creative minds behind this much-anticipated sequel first went to the drawing board, they didnt use the same mold as that of the original masterpiece. High School Musical 2 is a completely new movie featuring an all-new soundtrack, innovative dance moves, and a creative new plot, and that's exactly what the writers wanted!!
Little has been officially released about High School Musical 2, but this much is known. "It takes place in the summer at a country club owned by the Evans Family," says Lucas Grabeel on a current edition of Disney 365. In fact, it isnt just Lucas but Zac Efron, Corbin Bleu, Ashley Tisdale, Vanessa Hudgens, and Monique Coleman who have all repeated this obviously rehearsed line to various media outlets. Well, since that is all we know, Disney has obviously done their job. After only a few weeks of rehearsals Disney closed the Utah sets of High School Musical 2 so that the movie could remain mysterious and highly anticipated. Not only are die-hard HSM fans waiting with held breath to see the sequel, but even cynics and those who mock our devotion to this modern-day classic are intrigued by the secrecy enshrouding te upcoming High School Musical 2.
Thankfully, there are only a few months left until we wil finally get to see the movie (and prove to cynics that all of the hype was well-deserved), but until then, we will have to live off the small bits of knowledge we know thus far. Disney is slowly unveiling more about the plot. In a new commercial, we find out that Sharpay didnt want her father to hire a crowd of East High Students, but merely give a job to Troy Bolton so that she could get close to him. And unlike rumors had earlier announced, it is Gabriella Montez (NOT Troy Bolton) who is the new Life Guard at the country club to Sharpay's disappointment (and ours, as who wouldnt want to see Zac Efron without a shirt on in a swimming pool?!?!)
Luckily, the premiere of HSM2 is only a few short weeks away and then we will finally know what is going on with our favorite students from East High. Until then we are left with ever mounting questions. Among them:
Will Troy and Gabriella stay together?
Will Ryan get out of his sister's shadow and make his own star shine brighter?
Are Chad and Taylor still dating?
Will Zeke get his chance with Sharpay?
Is Kelsi working on a musical for next schoolyear?
Will Zac Efron sing as good as Drew Seeley?
