Welcome to the Unofficial Highland Writers Group Website

Highland Writers' Group at the Blue Room Cafe in Highland, IN

Hello and welcome to the very first HWG website. Here you will find information regarding the Writers Group, its Members, and the location where we now meet. This site will be changing over the next few months as we settle in, build our pages and add some pictures.

HWG consistantly draws ten or more members to each group meeting. The majority of those ten have been Members for over two years.

We meet every Saturday from 3:30 to 6pm at The Blue Room Cafe in Highland, IN. The coffee house is located on Highway Avenue in downtown Highland near York Trains.

Please bookmark this page and check back for updates soon.

What We Write

Everything!

From short stories to screenplays, poetry to essays, the HWG has a bit of everything from its Members. We've even had translations in French, prose accompanied by photography, comic books and scripts acted out. Some of our members are writing novels and bring chapters each week while others read a variety of shorter works. No two writers are alike in the HWG. The group has both published and new writers alike, some of which are working on genre fiction, humor, drama, coming-of-age, and everything else you can think of. We're a very versitile group unafraid of exploring new forms of writing.

From left to right: Sharon, Micah, Jeff and Larry discuss Jeff's stories published in a local newspaper.

We never write from prompts or assignments. Everything read to the group--and we do read aloud--comes from our muses. Meeting weekly means that there is always a forum for trying new styles.

History of the Highland Writers Group

The Highland Writers Group was founded in the mid-90's by Larry and Sharon Gininsky. The group met at Borders Books and Music in Highland, Indiana for seven years. In 2005, however, Borders went through reformatting with their store layout and the group needed to search for a new place to call home. We are a group constantly evolving!

The Group put out a book called Between the Pages in 2003. The book was available at Borders and contained original fiction, poetry, and memoirs from former and current group members. Many of the current Members have been succeesful in placing their work in nationwide magazines and ezines. One of our members also had a play performed and several others have been asked to read their work at universities and at open mic performances.

There are no dues for HWG members. The only requirement is that anyone interested in joining must be at least 18. Copies (at least 12) are also necessary for reading to the group. We normally read a maximum of 5 pages, double spaced in size 12 font (Times New Roman).
