As owners of active sighthounds , we enjoy a variety of activities, not just showing, we also enjoy the sport of lure coursing, since the huntingwith dogs ban we have moved over to the sport of lure coursing. This involves 2 dogs coursing a fake bunny known as the lure , we have our own lure machine and use it to keep the dogs fit and active, even the italians enjoy a good chase!
we do a small amount of lurcher shows with my girl Mabel, she is 3/4 whippet 1/8 italian greyhound and 1/8 bedlington terrier, she also lure coursed , she has seen a degree of success in the show ring winning many rabbitting classes and also became the winner of the scurry over hurdles at the Broadland greyhound and whippet club annual show, she done 50yrds over 4 hurdles in 4.01 secs! we are hoping to race mabel under BWRA rules later this year.
We are active members of the Broadland Greyhound and Whippet club and attend many fun pet meets.
A sighthound is a real joy to own and we take great pleasure in our dogs success but most of all we love the companionship they give us, always loyal and loving, they are family members 1st and foremost. There is nothing better then having the joy of a sighthound in your family however it can be hectic at times!!! One of the best descriptions of a whippet i have heard is they are 40 miles an hour couch potatoes! So very very true!!!
If you are ever considering a sighthound please consider a retired greyhound, these are often overlooked due to size or fear of chasing cats etc, they CAN be trained and make excellent companions in a family enviroment , deeley is an ex-racer who lives with my mother and her yorkshire terriers , he is so lazy though!!! He is now going to start obedience classes to show how they can be trained in many ways after a race career, we will keep you updated on this!
