Whippet and Italian Greyhound show kennels

Lurchers and whippets have been bred to work for hundreds of years , catching anything from rats to deer, mostly though rabbits and hares , used for fox control also . Although the whippet is now classed as a purebred , its origins started as a mixture of thought to be these  breeds, the greyhound, the italian greyhound , the old english terrier , believed to have been created as a poor mans greyhound in the north of england, able to fill the pot , rag race and be general family dog

both types are excellent assistants in the art of pest control

the lurcher is a mix of sighthound and another breed , typically a herding breed such as a collie ,or a terrier breed such as the bedlington terrier, although they come in so many variants it would be very hard to write and remember all !!! a longdog is a result of sighthound to sighthound crossing , for example a whippet x a greyhound .

Lurchers are in history almost always thought of as a poachers dog, scruffy dogs along with their shady character owners in a romantic sense

Working of these dogs came come in the form of daytime walking of fields with the permission of farmers to freely catch the vermin or game , the use of ferrets and nets catching rabbits that bolt or holding in nets until you despatch the quarry , this can be done with purse nets or a long nets, also you can lamp the permission at night with a high powered spotlight , spotting the quarry and dogs being sent to catch, or if working with guns , the dogs can be sent out to retrieve the shot quarry , this is still legal

it must be noted that anyone intending to work their dogs mst stay within the law as regards to the hunting ban , and always ask for permission to assist the clearance of pests and vermin , written permission slips should be carried at all times to avoid an unfair brush with the law, until this farce of a ban is overturned we must all remember the good times and stay lawful til our day of freedom comes again
