With the end result not reflecting the balance of the game, with St Anne's running in 3 late tries to clinch the match, in front of a healthy rain drenched crowd on Oldham Edge on Saturday.

In the second half St Anne's went all out for the winning try but Higginshaw 's cover defence was superb, time and time again denying St Anne's chance to score.
It was a cruel deflection that turned the game, with the ball deflecting into the arms of the on rushing St Anne's centre for a converted try for a 6 - 1 6 score on 70 minutes, the Higginshaw in the closing minutes with the heavy conditions taking its toll on the Higginshaw players St Anne's took the game away with 2 tries and a goal for a flattering score of 6 - 26 at the final whistle.

NOTE
Higginshaw ' s Past & Present Benefit Match & Race night on the 5th August in Aid of Terry Sweeney was a great success, Terry donated the £900 raised to Charity, half going to his favourite Charity New Start For Kids and half to Higginshaw's Injured Players fund.20/12/07 -

STEVE Perry suffered an unwanted 21st birthday present during Higginshaw's 29-18 home defeat to West Bank Bears.

In a division four game played in arctic conditions, Perry suffered a knee ligament injury after 50 minutes and now faces a lengthy spell out of the action.

Higginshaw, already missing several players with injuries, played a full part in an enjoyable game.

After conceding a converted try, Higgy responded when Perry dived in at the corner. And, after conceding two further tries to go 16-4 down, the home side started to click.

David Hewson and Ryan O'Donnell began to exert their influence and Perry got on the end of Michael Smith's peach of a pass, ending a move in which Dane Armstrong's 30-yard run played a big part.

That was on the stroke of half-time and five minutes after the restart, Higgy went over again when Paddy Jennings touched down Ryan O'Donnell's kick through. A Smith penalty closed the arrears to two points.

Higginshaw then had a player sent to the sin-bin for dissent and West Bank took full advantage by scoring three tries in that time to take the game away from the home team.

Smith's try three minutes from time was little more than a consolation, with West Bank knocking over a drop-goal right on the final whistle.

Andrew Walker ( Whack ) Has broken his neck in 3 places whilst diving in Goa with his girlfriend during an expedition in a remote coastal area. Andrew, who is a second row forward for the Higginshaw Rugby League Club, was rushed to an Indian hospital three weeks ago, where he was placed on ventilation and is expected to stay for the next few months. His girlfriend, who is from London, remains by his bedside.A friend told the Advertiser: "He has always been there for us – now we have to be there for him. He is dedicated to the club, and loves the craic and camaraderie at Higginshaw.

"As far as I know there was no negligence involved – it was just one of those things. He has been taking food in the last few days, which is a good sign.

"We all wish him well for his recovery and we’ll do all we can to support him."

Andrew, who has been a member of the St Stephen’s Street club for five years and is affectionately known as ‘Whack’ by teammates, is also central to the club’s fundraising and social activities.

His friend added: "He used to have a sports shop in Shaw that he ran as a sideline with a group of friends.

"They sponsored and donated shirts for us, and helped organise sportsmen’s dinners. He has been travelling up to Scotland quite a lot with work recently – he hasn’t been able to play much since the beginning of the season. But he is always the first one there when anyone needs anything."

Another team mate added: "He took to us – we’re his kind of team.

"We know how to enjoy ourselves and he enjoys the social side."

Friends rallied round after the accident and formed a committee to raise money for Andrew’s rehabilitation, with a fundraising day to be held at Tara Leisure, Shaw, in the coming months.

Higginshaw started off well but faded as the game went on, it was the big front row of Andy Kelly, Michael Smith, Ian Sutton, Dane Armstrong who tried hard to rally the young lads with some superb forward play, all working tirelessly throughout the match both on attack and defence.

game that was a credit to both sides.

move where Michael Smith, Mark Jewitt and Paul Turner combined to send Andy
Kelly blasting his way over taking several men with him for a try to tie the

Leigh East team, everyone played well in our first away victory.

Higginshaw 4-44 Langworthy Reds
Higginshaw lost against a strong Langworthy Reds side after looking to be the
better side in the first 15 minutes until a try against the run of play seem to
unsettle them, quickly followed by another one to give Langworthy a 12 nil lead.

Then to make matters worse Higginshaws stalwart Centre Michael Jewitt suffered a
seriously broken leg in 3 places when attacking down the left wing he was
tackled by 3 players when his collapsed in agony, with which  he ended up in
Hope Hospital until Tuesday, having had 2 plates inserted in the lower right
leg, which effectively will end his rugby career, a devastating blow to both the
player and the club as Michael aged 39 has been a superb servant to Higginshaw
both on & off the rugby pitch over the 20 years he has been at the club, the
Higginshaw club wish him a speedy recovery and will be holding some form of fund
raising events in the coming weeks for Michael.

Higginshaw missing several older heads, again fielding a young side young, but
it was the big front row of Michael Smith, Dane Armstrong who tried hard to
rally the young lads with some superb forward play, all working tirelessly
throughout the match both on attack and defence.
Full back Mark Ward, Steve Perry Josh Griffiths and Carl Fields had superb games
with several try saving efforts and also took the ball up when needed to give
the forwards a lift,

Higginshaw tried hard to break the Langworthy defence but it was not until the
75th minute that Halfbacks Paul Turner, Ryan O'Donnell  and David Smith worked
the run around with Big Dave Armstrong for his second try in 2 games, for a 44 -
4 score line which did not represent the input Higginshaw had on the game.

Higginshaw never dropped their heads all game carried on with their good work on
defence and attack with Arron Lees and Scott Foote going close after Michael
Smith burst the cover defence on two occasions.

Man of the Match Mark Ward, Carl Fields, Michael Smith, Dane Armstrong, Paul

Higginshaw 12-8 Pilkingtons
Higginshaw at finally broke their duck after a run of some 33 game without a win
the young Higginshaw boys, can now hold their head up in town after getting rid
of the monkey off their back, after coming back from 8 - 0 down at half time to
dominate the second half against a strong Millington side. Both sides played
their part in a great game rugby on Oldham Edge.

Higginshaw again fielding a young side young, but it was the big front row of
Michael Smith, Dane Armstrong and Andy Kelly who laid the foundation for the
win, with some superb forward play, all working tirelessly throughout the match
both on attack and defence. After Pliks took an early advantage with a
unconverted try in the opening exchanges, Higginshaw took them on with some
superb attacking rugby, with halfbacks Paul Turner, Ryan O'Donnell  and centre's
Jordan Smith, and Steve Perry supporting the big forwards at every opportunity.

Pilkington increased their lead on 34 minutes with a try wide out for a 8 nil
lead, slowly Higginshaw started to turn the game around with constant pressure
in the Pilkington line, with Mark Ward, Gary Burbridge, Chris Tomlin, all had a
chances but were stopped short of the try line.

The half time team talk from Assistant Coach Mark Jewitt who said next one to
score would win, seemed to fire Higginshaw boys on defence and attack, with the
young lads growing in stature as the game wore on, Ian Sutton and Michael Jewitt
once again setting the lead and on 50 minutes Dane Armstrong got the reward
after Chris Tomlin and Mark Ward had make the opening with Dane blasting in from
20 yards out Ian Sutton added the goal for a 6 - 8 score line. With their first
win in sight Higginshaw went all out attack at every opportunity despite being
repelled time and time again, they stuck at their guns and young Mark Ward was
rewarded for anticipating the grubber kick from Ryan O'Donnell, Mark chased the
kick and beat off three defenders to touch down for a try with Ian Sutton
converted.

With the clock ticking down Higginshaw carried on with their good work on
defence and attack with Carl Fields, Josh Griffiths and David Smith going close

their task and battled it out for a fine victory.

Saturday with confidence.

Higginshaw 0-14 Blackbrook

Higginshaw were unlucky not to take anything away from Saturday's game against a
strong Blackbrook side, in a great game rugby in atrocious conditions on Oldham
Edge. Higginshaw again fielding a side full of young promising lads who gave
their all and gave as good as they got from high flyers Blackbrook in the
opening exchanges.  with some superb defending from Ian Sutton, Steve Perry,
Ryan O'Donnell and new boy Gary Burbridge keeping the line intact,  until
Blackbrook took the lead with a converted try after 12 minutes in a game that
was a credit to both sides. Blackbrook increased their lead on 14 minutes with a

around with constant pressure in the Blackbrook line, Ryan O'Donnell, Jamie
Borland and Michael Smith all had a chances but were stopped short of the line,
on 25 minutes, Blackbrook increased their lead to 14 nil with a converted try.

This try seemed to fire Higginshaw on defence and never conceded another point
all game, with the young lads growing in stature as the game wore on, Ian Sutton
and Michael Jewitt setting the lead and all the lads followed by example with
every attack being repelled time and time again.

In the second half Higginshaw carried on with their good work and all out attack
going close after Jamie Borland burst the cover defence to hand onto Arron Lees
and Michael Smith who in turn set up Scott Foote just a foot short of the line,
but unperturbed the young lads stuck at their task and battled it out to the end
never once letting their guard down against a team full of experience to gain a
moral victory.

if we carry on from here.

Aspin, Mark Ward, Jammie Borland  and Steve Perry.

Higginshaw 6 - 30 Heysham Atoms

Match report to come soon

Higginshaw 6 - 40 Ince Rose Bridge

Higginshaw missed several of their more experienced players and they were further handicapped when another seasoned performer, prop Ian Sutton, dislocated two fingers in the pre-match warm-up.

When Sutton was forced to quit after only five minutes, the average age of the Higgy side was 19.

New boys Jamie Borland and Carl Ashton, plus John Fullen and Steve Perry worked hard in defence.

And Higgy soon scored a cracking try in which Carl Field made the break, Ryan O’Donnell carried the move on and Kevin Tighe side-stepped two defenders on his way tot he line.

O’Donnell added the goal, but Higgy couldn’t sustain their early effort and Rose Bridge went on to build a 30-6 half time lead.

Shell-shocked, Higgy picked themselves off the floor to restrict the Wigan side to only ten more points and to go close to scoring themselves several times. David Smith, Borland, Field and Paul Turner were all held short of the line .

A certain number 9  also deserves special praise. :p

Higginshaw  14 - 22  Leigh East

Higginshaw were unlucky not to take anything away from Saturday's game with
Leigh East, when they came back from 10 nil down on 25 minutes to lead 14 - 10
after 50 minutes in a brilliant game rugby in atrocious conditions on Oldham
Edge. Higginshaw gave as good as they got from high flyers Leigh East, with some
superb defending from
Andy Kelly, Steve Perry, Ryan O'Donnell and Kevin Tighe
keeping the line intact until Leigh East, took the lead with a converted try
after 15 minutes in a game that was a credit to both sides. Leigh East dominated
the first 20 minutes and increased their lead on 25 minutes with a try wide out
for a 10 nil lead, slowly Higginshaw started to turn the game around with
constant pressure in the Leigh line resulting in a penalty when Josh Griffoths
was impeded when chasing a kick, Ryan O'Donnell adding the penalty goal, also 2
more for offside offences to bring Higginshaw right back into the game. On 35
minutes Stand off Paul Turner split the Leigh East defence supported by
Ryan
O'Donnell
and Chris Cheatham who made 40 yards before setting up a try for Man
of the Match Chris Tomlin who wrong footed the defence with and angled run to
the posts from 20 yards out, to tie the scores at half time.

In the second half Higginshaw carried on with their all out attack which
resulted in a 1st try of the season for second row man
Kris Richards, Marcus
Clarke, Dane Armstrong, Dave Smith and winger Mark Ward
all handling before
sending in Kris Richards from 15 yards out with 3 men on his back as he crossed
the line, Ryan O'Donnell was just wide with the conversion, with Higginshaw
leading 14 - 10. Leigh East hit back with 2 quick unconverted tries for a 14 -
18 lead on 65 minutes, Higginshaw tried had to hit back and went close on
several occasions with Youngsters Carl Fields and Sean Stubbs making a good
impression on their debuts being held short of the line. Leigh East scored a try
on the final whistle to give a final score of 14 - 22 that did not reflect
Higginshaw's impact on the game.

The whole Higginshaw team deserves praise for their efforts against a big strong
Leigh East team, everyone tried hard and our first victory will not be far away
if we carry on from here.

Outstanding for Higginshaw were Man of Match
Chris Tomlin, Kris Richards, Andy
Kelly, Dane Armstrong, and Steve Perry.

Chris Tomlin playing an absolutely blinder.

Higginshaw Training starts at 6:30pm on Mondays and 7:30pm on Thursdays at Counthill School in Moorisde.

Higginshaw 2-44 West Bank Swans

Higgy tried hard and they had brave battlers in Scott Hewson, Michael Jewitt, Steve Perry and the outstanding Andy Kelly. Kelly running some hard yards was bowling them over like bowling pins. Marcus Clarke, like Hewson, showed up well on his return to the club. Scott Hewson a specialist fullback playin out of posotion at centre deserved a special praise.

 17/9/05 - Higginshaw 12-34 Pilkinton Recs

MICHAEL Jewitt scored twice and Andy Kelly won the man-of-the-match award as Higginshaw produced a brave performance in defeat at Pilkingtons. The St Helens side won 34-12 to pick up their first points in NW Counties division four, but it was a game that could have gone either way until Higgy lost Steve Perry and Chris Tomlin through injury in the later stages.
They became disorganised defensively after that and conceded 16 points in the last ten minutes after missing several gilt-edged chances earlier in the game.

Kelly, Mark Ward, two-try Jewitt, Steve Perry and Simon Wood, on his debut, all showed up well for Ray Ashton's team, while Ryan O'Donnell converted each of Jewitt's touchdowns.

At 4-0 to Pilkingtons, Perry and Stuart Donnelly were both held close to the line as Higgy piled on the pressure.

Winger Karl Curly also went close after good work by
Jewitt.

Pilkingtons, finishing the stronger, went 8-0 ahead, whereupon the impressive Kelly made two 30-yard breaks, culminating in
Jewitt's first try after good work by O'Donnell and Tomlin.

The home side built up an 18-6 lead before Higgy got back into contention with Jewitt's second try after an exciting move featuring Chris Cheetham, Ward and Paul Turner.

The visitors then went close to drawing level. Josh Griffiths picked up a loose ball 20 yards out, but with several options available, Higgy spread the ball wide and it went into touch.

17/9/05 - New Pics Uploaded in the pictures section & Higginshaw match report to follow in the next few days.

1/9/05 - Higginshaw 13-14 Cadishead

HIGGINSHAW were pipped 14-13 in a NW Counties fourth division thriller against Cadishead on Oldham Edge.
Coach Ray Ashton had a big squad available – a far cry from last season and one which bodes well for Higgy's prospects.
Cadishead took an early 4-0 lead, but Higgy hit back with Steve Perry impressing at centre, Paul Turner and Ryan O'Donnell creating openings and forwards Stuart Donnelly, Alan Dunn and Chris Tomlin running straight and hard.

Higginshaw had vital players missing with players like Scott Hewson, John Fullen & Raging Ross Edgerton missing out due to either work commitment or lack of team spaces.

Ashton's men got their reward when Ian Sutton and Mark Jewitt sent new-boy Turner through a gap. He chipped over the defence and was pulled back, but Higgy were awarded a penalty try which Tomlin improved.

A penalty goal pulled the visitors back to 6-6 at half-time, but Higgy edged in front again with O'Donnell's drop goal before the home side threw away a gilt-edged opportunity to go further head with another try.

Cadishead made them pay with two quick tries to go 14-7 ahead with ten minutes left.

Still fighting, Higgy came strongly again when man-of-the-match Mark Jewitt provided O'Donnell with a cracking try from 30 yards.
Tomlin goaled.

With Dane Armstrong, Chris Cheet-ham and new signings Kris Richards and Mark Ward showing up well, Higgy went all out for the winner, but failed in their bid.

4/9/05 - Higginshaw 6-16 Blackbrook

HIGGINSHAW went down 16-6 at Blackbrook (St Helens) in division four, this despite promising displays by Ryan O’Donnell, Andy Kelly, Stuart Donnelly, John Fullen, Mark Jewitt and big prop Andy Kelly.

Higgy had an early setback when O’Donnell, Paul Turner and Fullen created space for Donnelly to cross only for the referee to rule that he was held on his back.

However, there was no denying the Oldham side when a crossfield kick rebounded off a crossbar and Chris Tomlin picked up to stroll over the line for a try which O’Donnell converted.

Kelly and Dane Armstrong, the props, made the hard yards and veteran hooker Mark Jewitt rolled back the years with a vintage display of ball handling.

The team took time to settle, but new signings Mark Ward, Steve Perry and Karl Curly showed plenty of promise.

The second half was a slog, but young winger Ward was held inches short of the line and Ian Sutton, O’Donnell and Mick Jewitt all went close.
