Welcome to my Web Site

I have in my possession a hand written Diary of events during World War 1 between the years 1916-1918.
It was given to Eric by his mother, who was Horace's sister.
It may interest others who are tracing their ancestors and give them an insight into the history of those who served in the RAMC,43,Field Ambulance.

"Photograph of Diary"
Parts of the diary are good humoured--one entry reads--"Colonel told me off for laughing at him"
Other entries record the horror of war. Working in the Ambulance Service he was faced with the most appalling sights--which he records in graphic detail----

I found it most interesting reading

The diary starts on July 10th 1915 when Horace was already abroad and ends abruptly on July 2nd 1916 when I can only assume he was taken Prisoner by the Germans because he spent the rest of the war in a P.O.W. Camp- 'Munster111 Camp,Westphalia. He was finally released and demobbed, married and lived a full life until he died in 1988. He lived to the grand old age of 94 years.

This is a family photograph. Horace was born in 1893,one of the nine children of Robert and Jane Humphrey. Robert being a Master Tailor by Trade. Horace was 22 years of age when he was in the RAMC and started to write his Diary. His Medical Card shows he served during the period 1914-1920 and eventually reached the rank of Staff Serjeant

Start of Diary- July 1915

The Diary has now been transcribed.
A page has been added to include photographs of Munster 1/2/3/ POW camps, also of distant relations who were in the RAMC or were prisoners in these camps.
