Herbal Remedies for Ringworm

  • BLACK WALNUT (Juglans nigra) is a strong antifungal that has recently gained popularity as a treatment for ringworm and other fungal infections. The compounds in the bark and leaves act as astringent and antifungal agents, attacking and ridding the body of fungi.

  • Dosage: Black walnut is available in capsules. Break open a capsule and mix the powder with some water to form a paste. Apply the powder liberally to the infected area and cover with a bandage for about two to three hours, three times daily.

  • TEA TREE OIL (Melaleuca alternifolia) is a strong antiseptic. In fact, studies show that tea tree oil can be as effective as the popular antifungal medications for fungal infections.

  • Dosage: Apply undiluted tea tree oil to the infected area two or three times per day. If you have sensitive skin or are treating a child, dilute tea tree oil with an equal amount of vegetable oil. Apply once daily for seven to 10 days, or until symptoms clear. Never ingest tea tree oil, use externally only. Tea tree oil can cause serious side effects and even death if taken internally. Discontinue use if you experience any discomfort from tea tree.

  • GARLIC (Allium sativum) has a pungent yet multi-talented reputation. Its many uses include lowering cholesterol, controlling blood pressure, and fighting fungi and bacteria. A study published in the International Journal of Dermatology shows that garlic extract is effective at destroying up to 90% of the fungi-causing tinea infections.

  • Dosage: There are several ways to apply garlic: Crush garlic into a paste with an equal amount olive oil or honey and apply directly to the skin, leaving it on for one hour. You can also apply garlic oil to the affected area three times daily. For stubborn infections or scalp ringworm, take 1 or 2 garlic tablets (or cloves) daily. Use with caution on children. Garlic is pretty strong, and if used on a child, might actually cause blistering.

  • LAVENDER (Lavandula officinalis) fights ringworm, penetrating the skin and helping heal infections. It also reduces inflammation and itching.

  • Dosage: Add 10 drops of lavender essential oil to bath water or apply 10 drops of essential oil diluted with 1 teaspoon of olive oil directly to skin to treat ringworm infections.
