OAKWELLYN WELSH PONIES OF COB TYPE

Duhonw Bronwen

We bought Bronwen at the sales in October 2006. She was very shy, we hadn't noticed her when we had looked around the stables, but we obviously hadn't come across her, if we had seen her we would most definitely have noticed her! She had real flare but she was a chestnut, and we definitely didn't want a chestnut. (We already have one homebred chestnut mare, her appaloosa/chestnut gelding brother and a chestnut gelding - all of which behave like chestnut mares!)

When she came into the ring it was very quite, most people were still looking around the stables but we hadn’t seen anything we were planning on buying on the Friday so we had gone down to see the rough prices. She came in and a few people bid and my mum nudged me and asked what I thought, I said definitely and a few minutes later she was mine!

When we went to her stable to collect her to transfer her to her night accommodation, after we had paid, we met her owner, she warned us that she had not been handled and was ‘very sharp’ this was fine with us as we believe that with correct, constant, kind and firm handling, any horse will learn to trust. The lady also told us that she would do anything for carrots. She stayed the night in her new stable and was ok with us stroking her as long as we did everything slowly and didnt touch her tummy. She was inquisitive which was a good sign and she didn’t convince us that she was unusually sharp. When it came to loading her on the Sunday of the sales she went into the lorry just fine. We stopped on the way home to rest and water the babies and rest and water ourselves, we had bought some carrots from the green grocer at the sale and they definitely did the trick.

When she got home she was very shy, hiding behind the other foals. To start with she was the boss over the other three but she was soon put back in line by China. They stayed in their big stable for a few days, and then when they were eating well and had been wormed they were allowed out with their head collars. They joined Ben our old Section Dx in the field and had a good run around then grazed well for the rest of the day. Since then they have got on very well, Bronwen has turned into a beautiful young lady, she is still a little nervous and will take longer to mature than other youngsters but in the end she will most definitely be a beautiful young lady with loads of potential. She has already proved she can jump, fences, gates, ditches... whatever is put in her way! She is a beautiful young lady watch this space for further details!!!

THE FIRST DAY IN THE FIELD

Bronwen is now the proud mother of Oakwellyn Bohs Pheonix, she was born on the 16th January 2009!
