Usher was raisesd by his mother, Jonnetta Patton. He has a younger brother named James. His whole career started at age 6 in 1992,singing in his church choir and was in a lot of talent shows a a child. He was "discovered" at a talent show by Bryant Reid of LaFace Records. Usher auditioned for Bryant's brother, Antoni Reid (co-president of LaFace Records) and they had a deal to record an album which only had minor sucess. In 1997 Usher realesed his seconed album, My Way which was a sucess on the R&B charts. One of the singles from the album, "You Make Me Wanna", earned him the 1997 Soul Train Award for Best Male R&B Single and a Grammy Nomination.
