What is Helix?

HELIX is a First person shooter source modification created by my brother Xyius (aka Exos212, akA Mr.Data ), and me, Xyos212. Its emphysis on originality graphically is advanced source mapping, modeling, and texture art. Our goal is to make this look as realistic as possible, but still run at least at 40 FPS on an average machine. (HDR disabled will compensate alot of FPS problems for the low end machines)

The gameplay is still being drawn up as we create content. The setting, story, and weapons are all done (in concept) and ready for mapping/modeling, etc. So far gameplay will be as follows:

Round based, decent HP so it takes a bit to take an enemy down, Unique movement abilities to vary gameplay, and more little tweaks to the way you recover HP, deal damage, and destroy the enemy.

This is an abstract gameplay explination, and will be updated as we go along. Right now its a bit cumbersome to post progress on a continious basis and work on the mod, so updates will be about 3-4 days apart. (Best case scenario)

One big thing were going for in the mod is the results of you killing your enemy. Headshots will reward expoding heads (Think gibs with blood sprites spraying all over), exposions will cause bodies to, well.... explode

The basis of the mod revolves around realistic content, with alot of finess behind it.

All screenshots posted here are all WIP. They are all subject to change. We would appreciate any comments on them, as it will help the development to create the most realistic enviornments the source engine can handle.

Every screenshot (with the exception of the hands) will be shown in-game. No pre-rendered in XSI to make it look better than it is.

Storyline

HELIX

We are not humans. We are a lesser form of human. We are a form that has evolved from a single cell and gained consciousness. We have endured millions of years of evolution to arrive at our pitiful existence now. Our bodies are susceptible to death in endless ways. Micro-organisms pose a constant threat to our survival. We require air constantly, and water as well. Millions have died to advance our technology in medication. We advance only through sacrifice in life.

It was not always like this………….

Eons ago when the universe was born, before earth even existed, Life was born. It took the form of man. Trivial physical attributes differing from our current form, but man all the same.

This race was known as the Nephilim. Their strength and agility was unbelievable. They could see in multiple light spectrums. Their hearing was incredible. All senses were almost god like compared to ours. Micro-organisms were of no threat to their invincible immune system.

For millions of years this race developed incredible feats of engineering and progress. They erected buildings, created modes of transportation that we can’t even fathom.

They eventually developed so far that they discovered how to re-create the “Big Bang”, the mysterious force that gave birth the universe of today.

The Nephilim had explored billions of light years of the universe throughout their incredible existence. After realizing they were the only sentient life in the universe, and discovering the method of replicating the big bang, they wondered what to do with this knowledge. They had achieved what scientists and philosophers had dreamed of. They had discovered every conceivable avenue of information that existed. Thousands of year’s progress. Life remains the same. Given such a long existence had yielded its resolution. The Nephilim, or at least the ones in power, decided that life needed to exist from the beginning. They felt that multiple forms of life should exist in the universe.

Using their incredible knowledge they devised a plan.

They planned to re-create the big bang effect. They would plant seeds of their DNA into the reaction, and other random DNA strands to create life throughout the universe. They would only start out one-celled, but evolve just as they did. Their cells would be demoted to the most primitive form in order to develop naturally.

By the time they devised this, they existed as “spiritual translucent energy”. They would observe the progression of their new universe, but be invisible to us.

Once their Big bang reaction would occur, they would be unable to interact with the new universe. It will exist on a plane viewable from their plane of existence, but not intractable.

The process was set into motion. They gave birth to our universe in an instant. Throughout millions of years planets formed, life arose, and the Nephilim watched over them. They were seeking life that resembled their own in the infancy of their mighty species. Eventually earth came into existence and the Nephilim took interest. Life was developing as it did for them. Millions of years pass as life evolves on the planet. Unlike the Nephilim, the atmosphere on earth sustained the life that lived on it. Without it they would die. Still things progressed, but as time passed, one Nephilim wanted to change things.

This rouge Nephilim figured out how to take physical from on our plane. As he crossed over to our universe, he was almost enveloped in emotion, good and bad. He took physical form. His senses flared, and he existed as the Nephilim used to. Unfortunately because he was in a universe he didn’t belong in, it affected him in strange ways. He was unable to control his emotions. He was so desperate for physical existence he forgot the risks of doing so.

Eventually his emotions drove him mad and he took his life. His body fell to the earth, taking thousands of years to decompose and disappear.

After that earth progressed normally. We evolved into what we are today. We progressed our technology as the Nephilim did, and lived as best as we knew how.

Our susceptibility to disease is what leads us to develop genetic engineering. We started out small, changing cells to do our bidding, cloning, and trying to enhance our immune system.

2063 is the year Adam was found. Adam is not a man, but a cell. This was the last remaining cell of the remains of the rouge insane Nephilim who came to earth. Adams cell was damaged, but still revealed much to us about the nephilims existence.

In order to replicate Adam, it required to fuse with another organism’s bio-structure to regenerate. Earths scientists engineered the perfect human they could create. Enhanced body systems, senses, mind, and strength. They used this cellular blue-print to combine with Adams cell. Immediately the form of a man took shape emerging from protoplasmic liquid. He stood up, and spoke:

“Nephilim will rule this world, and you will all die”

Adam was not as he was when he existed as Nephilim in his old universe. Cellular degeneration removed a lot of his previous abilities, but he was still superior to the human being. Immediately he realized he had to dispose of all humans existing and all life in the universe in order to re-create his lost species.

Using his superior mind, he researches and develops methods of exterminating all life. He uses the life sustaining atmosphere against humanity. He develops nano-organic-micro bots that will enter humans, and kill them by attaching to every cell in the human body and disrupting their structure. This results in humans returning their protoplasmic form, killing them instantly.

He spreads the virus throughout Earth’s atmosphere. Before humans can react they are dead in an instant. After seeing this, Adam laughs at humanity, and its crippling weakness. What he underestimates is our will and spirit.

He plans to rid the universe of life, and breed Perfected Nephilim. Unfortunately he does not have the resources to perfect the race to how it used to exist. Still he is powerful, brilliant, and almost invulnerable.

He knows some organisms in the cosmos will resist the cellular attack, so he clones an army of himself. What he is not aware of is that Earth colonized mars in 2012, and since then it has developed to about 1/10 the population of earth. The surviving humans on Mars realize what has happened to Earth, and begin to prepare, research, and counter the attack on humanity.

As Adams army grows, Humanity does their best to genetically engineer their soldiers for combat to stand a chance against Adam and his mighty army. Because of the nano virus in earth’s atmosphere, the Human soldiers must wear protective suits to insulate themselves from the virus. These suits double as armor, and strength enhancers.

Just as Adam prepares to venture into space to exterminate life, Humanity retaliates.

The Nephilim are unable to progress into our plane to stop their insane subordinate. They can only watch as humanity and Nephilim go head to head in an all out war for the ultimate and most basic reward:
