Fire In The Sky

HELEN MURPHY

Helen Murphy is many things; mother, grandmother, traveler, writer; but what holds

her greatest interest is photography. It's been a passion since her teens, with

the usual images of family and friends. In 1989, Helen relocated to

Henderson from New York City and discovered the possibilities of

great photography. It was in cloud formations, great sunsets

and colors in the sky under different weather conditions,.

In recent years photography has become a defining part

of who she has become and her work is still evolving.

Exhibits and award-winning photographs speak to her

dedication and obvious enjoyment in this area. It's far from

the ordinary type of work and indicates an eclectic

approach to whatever grabs her.

Writing that began more or less as simple journal entries,

evolved into a series of "Open Letters", most with a grain

of truth and  based on personal experiences. Like LaBlacque,

and others, she participates regularly at the Poets' Corner

which meets at the West Las Vegas Arts Center every third Friday.

Friends encourage her writings and present her with i

nteresting and exotic journals to record her thoughts.

Her most recent travel was to spend a day with her younger son,

Damien, who makes his home in Salt Lake. The urgency was

his return to Iraq that weekend. Travel to Ghana in 2005 resulted

in an exhibit of more than 100 images plus artifacts at the

Arts Center in 2006, and Liberty Pointe in Green Valley Ranch in 2007.

But in the summer of 2006, she finally went on a cruise,

something she resisted vigorously whenever her late husband

tried to persuade her to sail with him and mutual friends.

Turns out, it was a pleasure. The trip began with a flight to

Seattle, then to board Holland America's Staten dam for

a 7-day cruise to Alaska. The names sounded magical:

Sitka, Juneau, and Glacier Bay. Standing at the edge of

Mendenhall Glacier and knowing that ice was formed thousands of years ago.

When people say they can't travel because their children

are small, or in school, she's reminded that her children have

been her traveling companions since grade school and before,

because with all his interests, her husband was not a traveling man.
