Feeding
There are many different foods on the market and different breeders tend to use different foods, I use Hills dry chicken cat food as their main supply complimented with pieces of chicken, chicken based wet cat food and meal worms a few times a week, (meal worms should be given sparingly as they are fattening) I also give them banana, melon and other pieces of fruit and veg.
A fresh supply of water should be available at all times, this can be from a water bottle or a bowl depending what your hog is used to.
Housing
My Hogs are housed in 2 different types of cages at the moment, these are the Zoozone 2 in which I place a 12" Superpet Comfort wheel and the Ferplast Mary cage in which i place a 12" Silent spinner Wheel.
I use a layer of wood shavings at the bottom of the cage, (these shavings should not be cedar as this can be toxic for your hog) and a house for hiding which you can make yourself or buy from a local pet store. I tend to use cardboard boxes as they are easily replaced, but the choice is yours. Some of my hogs are litter trained, so i put a tray in with some shavings .
Now that you have you cage set up it should be placed free from cold and drafts. Your hogs ideal temperature should be between 18 - 27 degrees centigrade or 65 - 80 degrees fahrenheit .(a normal central heated house should be fine) In the colder nights i put in a Snuggle Safe microwave heated pad which stays warm for up to 12 hours and I find my hogs love it and it seems to do the trick.
Toys
My Hogs favorite toy is a wheel which they run on all night and helps keep them trim. They also Enjoy cat bells and balls, the inside of a loo roll cut up the middle incase they get stuck and anything they can manipulate normally works well.
Husbandry
Your hogs home should be kept dry and clean and you should be prepared to take on a daily routine, this helps keep your hog happy and a happy hog normally indicates a happy owner.
Every morning i take out any uneaten food, remove and clean wheel and litter tray and for the hogs without a tray i remove any soiled and wet shavings and replace with clean ones.
Every evening i put in fresh food and water and put back the wheel and tray if i have not done so already, (usually the wheel and tray are put back after cleaning in the morning).
Once a week I give all my cages a good clean using an animal friendly disinfectant.
I find this routine works well for me and certainly keeps any odours at bay.
