   The Heatherburn Garden Railway

           Layout Description                                                                                     By Dave Bentley

The heatherburn railway originally started out as a simple figure of eight loop with trains feed from some automated storage sidings in the garage. Initial problems with gradients has bought about a redesign of the railway. The railway is now being rebuilt as an out and back line and will allow more pro typical operation.

Trains start their journey from the terminus in the garage. St Davids station has six platforms, four for main line trains and two serving  the branch to Cobblers hall.  The station features Kings Cross inspired archways supporting raised walkways and an overall roof based loosely on St Pancres. At one end of the station a 1980's style bus station is being built over the platform ends. On leaving the station we pass under the road bridge with the loop line trailing in from the left. This is actually a indoor test track with the duel purpose of providing access to the loco works and tmd. Next, on the left we pass the carriage washing plant as we cross over the point work forming the station approaches. The loop line diverges to the left just as we pass under another road bridge. On the right is the junction for the  branch line to the harbour with the parcels depot tucked in the corner behind it. After passing under the third road bridge we cross over the canal. On the left is the transport and waterways museum closely followed by Wains wharf signal box. Just before passing under the harbour branch line we are joined by the branch line to Cobblers hall joining us from the left. This runs back to St Davids via the tmd. After passing under the harbour branch line the three track formation exits the garage then runs along the top of a wall to the first station Byerley Parkway. This station when completed will have two island platforms. One will form a passing loop on the up line and will be used for holding trains to the terminus while the other is served by the down line and branch. On leaving the station we head up the garden to the start of the gradient down. Here the branch diverges at the site of Woodham junction before entering Woodham station. From here the branch crosses a viaduct before entering staintondale tunnel, leading on to the viaduct over the pond and the end of the line at Cobblers hall. The main line runs down hill from Woodham junction, skirting behind the rockery, before passing under the Cobblers hall branch then entering Lakeside station. On leaving Lakeside we pass over the viaduct then run out on to the wall that returns the trains to the garage. On arrival in the garage the trains will be stored on a lower level under the main layout. The trains will then travel the return journey back to the terminus at St Davids. I have worked out that the scale mileage of this run is 4.7 miles.
