   The Heatherburn Garden Railway

I have always loved trains from an early age, but it wasn't until I started secondary school that  I really got hooked. Saturdays were usually spent on the end of Darlington station train spotting with my school mates. During the week we would all cycle down to the railway bridge over the east coast main line near Aycliffe Village. Here we watched the last days of the rats, whistlers and peeks. After leaving school we all went our separate ways but the love of trains stayed with me. Starting work provided me with an income to spend on my new hobby - model railways. I started off in 00 gauge but a house move to Darlington a few years later also saw me change to N gauge.

The thing I liked with N gauge was the space to run full length trains, one thing I couldn't do in 00. My first real encounter with 00 outdoors was an article in the Railway Modeler about the Daventry Garden Railway. Ever since reading about this layout I've wanted to build a garden line of my own. In June 06 we bought our present house. My current N gauge layout moved into the garage along with a small 00 gauge layout built for my nephew to run Thomas on. At the last Crewe Works open day I bought a hornby class 86 loco. I always had a soft spot for the 86's and with the run down of the fleet I decided to start collecting some models to display in a case. Unfortunitly I made the mistake of putting the loco on the Thomas layout ...

Looking for somewhere to run my growing collection of 00 led me to the garden. About this time I stumbled across the Taw-Vale Garden Railway website. Armed with ideas and with the full support from the missus, work commenced  in October 06.
