Algebra I -   Mrs Sonya Hedrick E-mail Mrs. Hedrick

     suggested grades: 8th or 9th

This text has a wider scope than other beginning algebra courses in that it                 covers basic algebra as far as quadratic equations while integrating                               statistics,  probability, and geometry. The text's strength is its synergistic                     emphasis on three major areas: visual representation of algebraic concepts,                   manipulation of  algebraic equations, and application of algebraic principles to real-world problems. Topics include square roots, systems, polynomials,                 exponents, algebra of linear equations and inequalities, and use of algebraic                 fractions in probability concepts. This is a complete Algebra text, and it                       prepares students for all math and science courses that require Algebra as a                 prerequisite.

Algebra II -   Mrs Sonya Hedrick   e-mail Mrs Hedrick

    suggested grades: 9th or 10th

This text integrates all the mathematics the students should have had previously, including a substantial amount of geometry. It develops  proficiency in working with linear and quadratic equations; powers and roots; and logarithmic, trigonometric, and polynomial functions. The text's strength is its synergistic emphasis on three  major areas: visual representation of algebraic concepts, manipulation of algebraic                    equations, and application of algebraic principles to real-world problems.

Geometry - Mr Sean Hefner    e-mail Mr Hefner

                suggested grades: 9th or 10th

In addition to covering all the standard school geometry topics, the book                      puts great emphasis on problems found on the SAT and ACT. In fact, nearly                  every problem set includes several problems that were modeled after those                    found on actual SAT and ACT exams. And since all Teaching Textbooks use                  the review method, students  become better and better at solving these                        important problem types each day.

Teaching Textbooks - CD's recommended but not necessary

Prerequisites: Alg I

    suggested grades: 12th (advanced 11th)

Larson, Roland, Robert Hostetler, and Bruce Edwards.Calculus of a Single                     Variable, 7th Edition. Boston, Massachusetts: Houghton Mifflin Company,                      2002.

It has got to be the most helpful, easily understood, and well written calculus books ever to find its way to a school. The illustrations help visual learners to "see" what a formula looks like in three dimensions in latter chapters, and the practice sets go in order of necessity of learning (i.e. - early problems develop skills necessary to answer later problems, with no monotonous repetition of the same concepts as in most math books). It also has reference pages for basic formulas, so it becomes an invaluable tool for later calculus classes.

Prerequisites: Trig or Pre-Calc

Physical Science -  Trisha Price   e-mail Miss Price

suggested grades: 8th (there may be some 9th)

The text discusses such topics as the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, weather, the             structure of the earth, environmentalism, the physics of  motion, Newton's Laws,                gravity, and astrophysics. The author especially concentrates on the myths generated      by the hysterical environmentalist  movement. There are many hands-on experiments to   do, and they all use  household chemicals and supplies. It is an excellent text for                preparing  the student to take a college-prep high school science curriculum.

 suggested grades: 9th (some 10th)

High School Biology with Lab -

Exploring Creation With Biology is a college-prep biology text  provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of biology. Heavily emphasizing the vocabulary of biology, it provides the student with a strong background in the scientific method, classification scheme, microscopy, biochemistry, biology, molecular and Mendelian genetics, evolution, dissection, ecosystems. It also provides a complete survey of the five kingdoms in  Creation. Please note that this text does not contain  a  discussion of human anatomy and physiology. Most college professors do not consider it to be a part of a solid, college-prep course. Human anatomy and physiology is such a detailed subject that it merits an entire high school course (see Apologia's Advanced Biology course).

Spanish II - Ansley Heath e-mail Miss Heath (NEW ACTIVITY)

suggested grades: successful completion of Spanish I -

Spanish II aims to cover a variety of concepts, including mastery of those concepts           covered in Spanish I (ser and estar, present tense, preterite tense,                       commands, gustar, nouns and articles, ir + a + infinitive, etc). New or extended                  concepts will include: expression of time, stem changing verbs, irregular verbs,                 regular verbs, imperfect tense, gerunds and progressives, noun and article                        agreement, vocabulary augmentation and more. As in Spanish I, there will be an               emphasis on comprehension with listening exercises at home and in class.                        However, students will be expected to comprehend more Spanish in class based on       former knowledge and as a method of learning by immersion. Aside from the                    explanation of grammatical concepts or questions concerning new topics, there will          be minimal use of English in class. This is a very effective way of learning foreign              language and will encourage students to speak more Spanish, thus increasing their         confidence in conversational skills. In effort to utilize and practice grammatical                   knowledge, there will also be an emphasis on reading and writing. Assignment of             small readings and short essays are to be expected. Overall, the main goals   of               Spanish II will be (1) to effectively prepare students for further study in Spanish III,              and (2) to boost confidence in the language for practical use.

Pre-requisites: Successful completion of Spanish I at NLC or  a score of 70/100 on the placement test.  The test will be posted here as soon as it is  available.

             World Literature - CLASS CANCELLED

British Literature - Christy Davis e-mail Mrs Davis( NEW ACTIVITY)

suggested grades: mainly 10th and 11th

This British Literature course will be a study of original writings rather than excerpts found in the modern classroom today.  The first semester will consist of  three novels:

A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens

The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

             Persuasion by Jane Austen

The second semester will begin with nine weeks of Shakespeare and the final                           nine weeks will conclude with:                                                                                             Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy

The students will also be required to memorize and present before the class a                           recitation package that will improve their public speaking skills and commit to                        memory paragraphs that are often referenced throughout their lives.

I believe the variety will encompass the many styles found in British writing and                        provide a broad perspective to discuss many literary allusions referenced in                              today’s college classrooms. The students of this class will improve their writing                       skills based upon terminology and techniques learned in class.

Each family will be required to purchase the books necessary from a local                               bookstore.  Because the books are considered classics, they are very readily                         available and inexpensive.  My favorites are the Barnes and Noble Classic and The                   Modern Classic publications.  These include footnotes that are helpful to                                 understand the text.

The Shakespeare unit consists of Hamlet, Macbeth, and As You Like It.  I suggest since

we will only meet once a week purchasing the No Fear  Shakespeare version found at                                 Barnes and Noble.  This has a side by side  translation that will help the students                                       understand.  If we met everyday I would  not recommend this but in this circumstance it                           was very useful.

This class is designed as an upper level high school course and younger students                   may find the content mature and the coursework difficult.

         American Literature -

Christy Davis e-mail Mrs Davis (NEW ACTIVITY)

suggested grades: mainly 9th or 10th

This American Literature course will be a study of original writings rather than                           excerpts that are found in the modern classroom today.  Each semester will                           consist of four novels that will provide what, I believe, is enough variety of style to                     appreciate the early American culture.  I have also chosen books that will                              stimulate the types of discussion that these young students will face when they                       enter public universities.  I believe giving them the argumentation skills to address                   these post-modern issues will be beneficial to the students.  Therefore, some of                       the books I’ve chosen deal with mature issues.

Along with the discussion of each book they will also be required to write a paper                     per week that will incorporate the teaching of literary techniques and will                                 strengthen their skills in the area of writing comparative critiques.  However, I will                     teach them how to do this step by step.  During the course of each novel they will                   also be required to write a small research paper (2-3 pages) on the author.

Each parent will be required to buy the books necessary from a local                                       bookstore such as Barnes and Noble.  Because the books are considered                              classics they are very readily located and very inexpensive. I prefer the Barnes                       and Noble Classic or The Modern Classic publications.  These have footnotes that                   are helpful to the understanding of the novel.

Here is the list of novels I have chosen.  In parenthesis you will find the theme that                   I believe makes this book worthy of evaluation.
                  Semester One
                  - Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane (courage)
                  - Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain (judgment)
                  - The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne (repentance & forgiveness)
                  - The Pearl by John Steinbeck (greed)
                  Semester Two:
                  - Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe (sacrificial love)
                  - To Kill a Mockingbird by  Harper Lee (prejudice)
                  - Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton (contentment, adultery)
                  - Short Stories to be announced
