The Hearing Loss Association of Gainesville welcome all who cope with hearing loss, their families and friends! We are a non-profit organization that strives to support the needs of those with all degrees of hearing loss through advocacy, self help and concern for each other. The University of Florida Audiology Department and Shands Speech and Hearing Clinic are also a great source of information.
Gainesville's support group chapter is called the Hearing Loss Association of Gainesville! There are now 17 chapters in Florida!! We are a volunteer, international organization of hard of hearing people, their relatives and friends. We are all nonprofit, non-sectarian educational organization devoted to the welfare and interest of those who cannot hear well.
Meetings and socials are usually held once a month. Come join us as we discuss the everyday issues that come with living with a hearing loss! "Socials" to get aquainted with others who are hard of hearing are also planned at various restaurants around town .....check with us for times and dates.

Past Happenings........
Members of HLA Florida participated in the recent Hearing Health Awareness Fair at the Villages Hospital at Lady Lake, Florida. It was very well attended and a huge success in helping the hospital decide which devices and assistance they can opffer to patients who have any degree of hearing loss.
Our first Walk4Hearing event , held along beautiful Tampa Bay , April 12 was a huge success. people came to join us as we walked to raise awareness about concerns of hearing loss. People pushed baby strollers , walked, ran and brought their friendly service dogs too! There was food, music and a joyous time was held by all who attended. Student volunteers from the University of South Florida were much appreciated and fun to work with. Look for news about our next walk4hearing event to be held in GAINESVILLE! Mark your calendars for March 21, 2009 !
The Reno, Nevada HLA National convention held in June, 2008 was a great place to meet others from all over the USA and Canada. Many workshops and a great expo hall allowed us to learn many new ways to cope with hearing loss and new technology.
The cruise aboard the Mariner of the Seas was a huge success in implementing communication strategies and using captions for the live stage shows. Best of all were the friendships formed as those who cope with hearing loss came together from all over the USA and had a blast!
The Oklahoma City National HLAA Convention ,held in June was a huge success and people from all over the country came to learn about new technology, support and advocacy. We made new friends and greeted the old! New year, the convention will be in Reno, Nevada!!!
The Florida Newsletter Hear-Ye, Hear-Ye was awarded the BEST State Newsletter !! Judy Martin , Jacksonville....is our wonderful editor.
The Florida website HLA-FL.com was also awarded the best state web site award!!! Melissa Trauthwein, also of Jacksonville, is our talented webmaster (webmistress:)
On March 21, HLAA, FCCDHH, FAD teamed up to visit the Capitol for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Rally. Speeches were made and support from hundreds as we shared our needs and concerns to the public and then inside the Senate. Licensed interpreters and captioning were top issues.
Sprint awarded the Hearing Loss Association of Florida at the Tampa Buckaneers Stadium for their involvment in helping Sprint Telecommunications Relay become a success in Florida. The event was highlighted by dinner and a tour of the stadium. This was held November 15, 2006.
A Hearing Assistive Technology Training was held at the University of Florida in October 2006. Many new devices were discussed and those who took the course are more then happy to discuss the new technology available today! The 2006 Annual Hearing Loss Association of America Convention held in Orlando ,Florida June 29th to July 2nd.was a huge success!!
Lou Ferrigno, known well as "The Hulk" as well as two time "Mr. Universe", did a fantastic job of reliving his experiences growing up as a hard of hearing child in NYC. He shared all obstacles he had to overcome to be the man he is today. We could all relate to his stories in one way or another.
Michael Chorost was our guest speaker for the closing banquet. He also provided insight to living with a hearing loss and how a cochlear implant changed his life.
Attendees joined us for a memorable event of new technology, fun, activities and meeting new friends. Every year HLAA members get a special offer of reduced savings above and beyond the regular discount for members for the annual convention.
