Scholarship Philosophy and Financial Grant Policy Statement
The scholarship committee will take the following criteria, in no specific order of importance, into consideration:
-Ability
Academic performance: Minimum 2.5 GPA (grading period to grading period).
Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA for the prior grading periods.
-Financial need
Self-contribution to expenses at least in the amount of the scholarship
Ability/desire to give back to the HDFC program
Proven commitment to the HDFC program (volunteerism)
Citizenship, leadership, sportsmanship
-Applicants must be US Fencing members and HDFC Members or a contributing Leave of Absence Member. All participants must pay a minimum of 50% of their fees so scholarships will always be a partial covering of expenses. Also at some point, all scholarship recipients must make some type of contribution back to the club. The nature of the contribution should be in the form of volunteer work at HDFC and HDFC functions.
Please read all of the following information before applying.
CLUB MEMBERSHIP. Prior to grant request a HDFC membership form must be signed and at least 50% of first and last months fees must be submitted and on file with HDFC. Priority will be given to athletes with US Fencing Membership and history of national or international competitions. Grants for dues remain in effect for the “fencing year” which ends August 31st. Grants for dues range form 10% to 50% per month and are intended to offset no more than ½ (half) of total dues.
TAX FORMS. Applications must include a signed copy of your parents latest IRS 1040 form.
(IF) FINANCIALLY INDEPENDENT. Any applicants, who are financially independent from their parents, must include a signed letter from both parents acknowledging such. You must also submit a copy of your own IRS 1040.
GRADE REPORTS. Applications must include a copy of your last terms grade report and the most recent grade report. Home school students must present some example representing suitable studies and competencies in lieu of grades.
EMPLOYMENT VERIFICATION. Application must include a letter from employer, pay stubs, or W2 statement of earnings verifying their self-contribution to expenses.
COACH RECOMMENDATION. Applicants must secure a letter of recommendation from their coach. Have your coach submit their recommendation directly to the Scholarship Committee. It is your responsibility to follow-up with your coach on this.
ATHLETE LETTER. 1) We would like a brief description (in the athletes own words) of his/hers prior experience with the sport. 2) A brief outline of his/her future goals for the coming season. 3) Also a brief outline of his/her projected volunteer commitment to HDFC for the fencing year.
SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES. We encourage you to brief us on any special family circumstances that would be helpful to us when considering your application (attach a separate sheet).
PROPOSED TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE. Please include your proposed tournament schedule for the fencing year. Only tournaments that require pre-qualification are eligible for grants however we still want your full schedule.
EQUIPMENT NEEDS LIST WITH COST BREAKDOWN. Overall fencing expenses are considered in grant requests however scholarship grants are not made for equipment.
TRAVEL GRANTS DO NOT REQUIRE COMPLETE RE-APPLICATION. If you have qualified for a tournament and have already completed a scholarship application you do not need all the attachments to request a travel grant. See application for requirements.
