Records Set at Marlborough’ Main Street Mile

The expected sunny weather never made it to the start of the Marlborough Main Street Mile, but 73 competitors did, and fast times were reached by many. With cloudy skies and temperatures slightly over 50 degrees, Adam Parslow from West Boylston and Christopher Simpson from Arlington sprinted the entire downhill course and Parslow won with an amazing 4.21, just one second ahead of Simpson. The winning time tied a course record held by Rich Dorian, which was set in 2005.

On the women’s side, youngster, and Marlboro High standout Ally Oram smashed the course record running an amazing time of 4.55. The previous course record was held by Rebecca Connolly from Wilmington who placed second overall in a time of 5.09. Connolly’s old course record was 5.12.

Marlboro High’s cross country captain Mike Bryant (3rd overall) was the first male finisher from Marlboro in a time of 4.31. Ms. Oram was also the first female finisher from Marlboro.

The first parent-child team was John (5th) and Peter Kirk (15th) from Ashland in a combined time of 10.23 setting a new event record. The first parent-child team from Marlboro was David (10th) and Gwen Hogan (11th) in a combined time of 10.59.

The race was sponsored by the Marlboro Heritage Fair, Marlboro Recreation Department, Marlboro Police Department, Marlboro Wellness Committee and the Highland City Striders.

Striders Shine at Wayside 5k

Eight members of the Highland City Striders medaled at the Wayside 5k on Wednesday, June 25th at the Wayside Racquet Club in Marlborough. Fifteen total members participated in this popular, local event and many completed this tough (and long?) course with their best times! Great job Striders!

Ken Hutton Wins Worcester's 5k Jolly Jaunt

Members of the Highland City Striders from the greater Marlborough area traveled to Worcester on December 1st to compete in the Special Olympics' Jolly Jaunt 5k. The proceeds of this race go to support the Special Olympics of Massachusetts.

At the 9:30 AM start, 76 joyous runners began the race up Shrewsbury Street despite the chilling 25 degrees and 25 mph wind gusts. The Highland City Striders are famous for their on-going commitment to the community, and this race seemed like a perfect opportunity to "make a difference" in a child's life, and compete with local running teams.

Kenneth Hutton from Marlboro paced himself well for the first two miles, and strided down the last stretch to out-kick his nearest competitor by only three seconds in winning the overall race. Ken's time was an amazing 19.26 considering the strong head-wind the last mile.

Other medalist for the Striders include:

Elizabeth Mastejohn from Hudson winning the (17-29) female age group in a time of 22.04,
Lynne Hanko from Marlboro winning the (30-42) female age group in a time of 22.13,
Chuck Hanko from Marlboro winning the (40-34) male age group in a time of 22.06,
and
Mark Vital from Marlboro placing 3rd in the (40-34) male age group in a time of 24.33.

Another Strider Sandra Fillios from Marlboro set a personal best in a time of 27.44.

Striders Making Big Difference in the Community Turkey Trot 2007

Who are the members of the Highland City Striders?

We are runners who live in the greater Marlborough area, who meet weekly to run various distances for fun and to keep in shape! We run, sweat and laugh together. Our club has been in existence since April 2004. All of our members are 14 years old and older, some of us are significantly older.

What does it mean to be a Strider?

The Highland City Striders is a small group of runners who love to run together, play together and EAT together. We run weekly workouts and participate in local road races. In addition, we coordinate and run a number of low key races that support the local community. For example, last Thanksgiving we organized a road race that helped to raise over 800 can goods for the local food pantry.
