Outer-Space Spectacle in the Shires

Review by James Hodkinson

The concept of several bands devoted to the somewhat obscure musical genre of 'Space Rock', staging a psychedelic musical event together in a school in an Oxfordshire market town, then drawing a decent crowd, breaking even financially and putting on a mind-blowing evening to boot...it might all seem a little far fetched. And although the southern shires have long been the geographical home of this form of alternative Rock, with Ozric Tentacles, Hawkwind and swathes of their respective fans based in the West Country, it still sounded like a tall order. But on Friday 30th September, at the music venue attached to Cooper School in Bicester, a consortium of bands, technicians and enthusiasts pulled off just such an event.

The self-proclaimed 'Space-Rock Spectacular', chiefly the brainchild of Dave Adams, bass player with Hawkwind tribute band Assassins of Silence, really did live up to its name. The event succesfully drew together acts from the various sub-genres, which have historically both grown out of and fed into the Space Rock scene: ambient, trip-hop dub fusion, progressive instrumental jamming and heavy space rock in its purer form.
Much of the cohesion grew from well planned and delivered support, provided by Terry Hawke the space rock DJ, who compared during band changes, a powerful PA and well-mixed sound and the superb lightshow provided by Lighthouse, with traditional projections meshing nicely with computer generated graphics.

'10th Roadburn Festival'

Tilburg, Holland: 09.04.05

"My initial contact with the main organiser, Walter Hoeijmakers, was the offer to compose a narrative dedicated both to him and to [Planet] Roadburn. Walter liked the narrative as he could relate to both the words and deeds! The narrative is now featured both on Roadburn's current website and will be included in the forthcoming programme. Initially Walter invited me over to the event as a guest, but in the end offered me a two and half hour DJ set, and I willingly accepted. This is was my debut DJ set outside of the UK and although my expertise is with radio broadcasting I adapted the set into a kind of psuedo-radio broadcast. I was based in the Cafe' area of the 013 venue from 7.30pm to 10.30pm, and I played a mixed set of sci-fi movie sound wav's, space-rock, ambient, prog-rock and the psychedelic! It's difficult to describe this powerful, doom-stoner, space rock and gothic-like festival, you had to be there to experience it. But I found the Dutch people very friendly and very helpful, or maybe it was the passive inhalation of 'herbal essences' that infused the whole venue!; ahhh! this took me back to the late 1960's and early 1970's!"

 Playlist

Helios, Hawkwind, King Crimson, Ozric Tentacles, Radio Dystopia, Eloy, Cosmic Jokers, The Pocket Gods, Bill Machnie & Jerry Willard, Cybermonkey, Syustem 7, Darkness Within Darkness, Leo Tagliavore, Alien Dream, Nigel Potter, Tangerine Dream, Harvey Bainbridge, Space Mirrors, Jefferson Spaceship, Carbon Life Forms, Can, HUVA Network, Formaria, Ars Nova, Hawkwind, Eloy, Gel-Sol, Banco De Gaia, T-30 Control, Pink Floyd, Astralasia, Eraz Yaary Project, Ashra Tempel, Russ Gabriel, Aes Dana, Quarkspace, Steve HIllage, GoodCopBadCop, Assassins of Silence, Alex, Eloy and Ozric Tentacles.

My sincere thanks to Walter Hoeijmakers and to Space Ritual, and to all the musicians/composers & distributers who contributed both directly, and indirectly
