02/05/06 - Blades F.C. Youth 0(p5)- 0(p4) Upper Ardoyne |
|
The Blades got sweet revenge for their cup exit at the hands of Upper Ardoyne a few weeks ago, with a deserved win against this season's cup champions, to bring the East Antrim League Plate back to Avoniel. The Blades put in one of the best performances of the season, to bag their first trophy since the treble winning season of 2004. Upper Ardoyne had a disallowed goal, but the Blades had the majority of the play. It all came down to a penalty shoot-out and right-back Matthew Taylor scored the winner to spark the celebrations.

29/04/06 - Blades F.C. Youth 0-2 Carniny Youth F.C. |
|
A Blades team missing several first-team players were beaten at The Valley 2-0 by last year's league champions, Carniny Youth. Assistant Manager, John McClung also controversially stopped Lewis Crothers playng in this game; a view not supported by the majority of the team. The scoreline however didn't reflect the closeness of the game. In the end it came down to who took their chances, even though Carniny squandered some as well. Ruiséal McKimm and David Davies tried their hardest to find a breakthrough, with McKimm twice going close. Craig McBride had the unusual task of playing the holding role in midfield, and perhaps the Blades missed his attacking flair. It was also an unfamiliar backline, with carl Barklie and Alan Millar coming in and having good performances. The midfield seemed to struggle sometimes, without a natural defensive-minded player. But the Blades still forged chances, with mark Tweedie finding a lot of space down the right flank. Carniny got their first goal, somewhat against the run of play. It resulted with a long ball finding a Carniny player in a lot of space to slot home. In the second period, carniny doubled their advantage with around ten minutes left, after missing a penalty as well. Ross Patterson and Ruiséal McKimm had golden opportunities but couldn't find the net. At the final whistle a very disappointed Blades team finished third in the league, failing to secure second spot witha win on the final day of the season. One fixture remains this year for the Blades, with a League Plate Final against bottom-spot club, Upper Ardoyne.

24/04/06 - Crothers Recieves Club Suspension |
| After an incident during the Blackpool Cup trip, Lewis Crothers has been suspended by Blades F.C., until further notice. Assitant Manager John McClung has also been suspended by the club. A meeting is to be arranged to discuss the matter further. Crothers is now playing at East Belfast F.C. until the matter is resolved and has scored two goals in his first two appearances. | |
16/04/06 - Blades F.C. Youth 0-3 Loughgally Albert Colts |
|
A defeat in the Blades' final game of the Blackpool Cup 2006. A win would have seen the Blades progress to the Blackpool Cup Semi-Finals and a draw could have seen the Blades reach the Shield Semi-Final, so there was much to play for. Loughgally scored their opener with a stunning free-kick from 30 yards. Crothers looked to have saved it when he tipped it on the post, but the ball cannoned back of the upright and hit Crother's back and in. Loughgally were probably worth their victory, but some very poor refereeing decisions were perhaps to blame for the extent of the defeat for the Blades. In the second half Loughgally scored two more. Firstly a well struck shot and then a mistake by Adam Southerton to enable a Loughgally striker to tap in. However the Blades will take heart out of their performance this year, and it was a shame that they didn't have a bigger squad, because by the time of this game there were several injuries to players and many will feel that the Blades perhaps could have won this competition if their full squad had travelled and they had performed to their best in all four games. Jason Harper, Carl Campbell and Lewis Crothers all played through the pain barrier. The standard of refereeing certainly came into question with Johnny Craig and Jason Harper carded and Craig McBride sent off after the final whistle for verbal abuse at the referee. However there was an impressive performance against Chelsea, a draw against Walldorf, and the feeling that the Blades could well have had three wins out of the four games with a bit more luck. Well done and many thanks to Adam Caldwell, Carl Campbell and Emmet McKimm, who all played well for the Blades, with such a depleted squad travelling to Blackpool. The club also recieved considerable vocal support from St. Andrews Youth Team, and there was word of a handful of Blades players impressing several scouts. Next up, their final league game against last season's league champions Carniny Youth F.C.

16/04/06 - Blades F.C. Youth 1-1 Rot-Weiss Walldorf |
The Blades will feel disappointed after producing a superb performance against Chelsea, they could only manage a draw with a German side that the Blades looked stronger than. After several chances for the Blades, the German semi-professional team scored first against the run of play, but they did take their goal well. A good ball, resulted in a mazey run down the left flank and the drilled cross in was smashed into the net from six yards. A poor start, but the Blades kept going, and despite not playing to their potential, they were definately a match for the German team. There was a superb performance from Walldorf's centre-back, winning virtually every header and blocking anything the Blades threw at them. Lewis Crothers made a few routine saves, but the Blades seemed on top. Craig McBride, Johnny Craig and Jason Harper again got the team going, and it was McBride who grabbed the winner late on. A dubious penalty awarded to the Blades in the final minutes by the Scottish referee, and McBride stepped up to fire in his sixth goal of the season, and second of the tournament. The midfield playmaker has never missed a penalty for the East-Belfast club. The Blades felt they could have won this game, but perhaps they were running out of steam, after the huge effort made aginst Chelsea.

15/04/06 - Blades F.C. Youth 2-2 Chelsea F.C. Academy |
Certainly one of the best performances by the Blades in their four year history. The Blades took to the field against a youth team from the F.A. Premier League Champions, which was daunting enough. But with several Blades first-teamers missing the trip, a severely weakened side had to somehow compete with a youth team including several top-class foreign and U.K. based youth players. It was shocking to find that the Blades struck first with a sublime Craig McBride header, looping into the top corner past the Chelsea keeper. However by this stage, Chelsea had already forced several top-class saves from Lewis crothers in goals. Firstly tipping a free-kick destined for the top corner wide, then two close-range efforts. The Blades keeper seemed on top form, but Chelsea broke through, when they forced Crothers into a save from a one-on-one. The rebound fell to a Chelsea striker to smash home, with the Blades keeper still on the ground. 1-1 at half time and the Blades couldn't lose their concentration. The Blades backline of Emmet McKimm, Ryan Dickie, Adam Caldwell and Alan Millar were soaking up a lot of pressure, with the NI side trying to exploit Chelsea on the counter-attack. Jason Harper was a strong contender for Man Of The Match, with his superb dribbling and passing, but perhaps slightly surprisingly, his defensive play. Harper executed several last-ditch tackles and blocks and was also effective going forward. Ruiséal McKimm also tormented Chelsea with his speed and hassling. Craig McBride, Johnny Craig and Mark Tweedie showed some superb composure and passing and were causing the Chelsea backline problems. But it was Blades top-scorer Ruiséal McKimm who put the Blades ahead again. When the ball broke to him near the edge of the box, he hit a superb looping half volley into the net. McKimm then had a wonder strike tipped on to the bar by the Chelsea keeper. However Chelsea were constantly dangerous, and forged more chances, with Crothers again producing some more top-drawer stops. Chelsea did break through with a superb drilled shot into the bottom left corner. However any more chances were either thwarted by Crothers or his backline, with Ryan Dickie performing very well as usual, and the Blades hung on to a valuable point against a quality side. A superb team performance with newcomers Carl Campbell, Adam Caldwell and Emmet McKimm not looking out of place.

15/04/06 - Blades F.C. Youth 1-2 Preston Athletic |
The Blades played their first game of this year's Blackpool Cup against Scottish non-league side Preston Athletic. Despite dominating long periods of the play the Blades picked up no points in their first Group Stage game. The quality opf finishing proved to be the difference, with Preston forcing Lewis Crothers to make several saves before they grabbed the opener. Poor defending meant a Preston attacker gained the ball inisde the box and he slotted home to put the Scottish side ahead. However the Blades responded immediately with trialist Carl Campbell grabbing his first goal in a Blades shirt. It was some poor defending by the Scots that allowed Campbell to finish. However Preston grabbed the winner in the second half, which left manager Paul McMurray feeling disappointed at the fact the Northern Irish side were largely the better team but failed to take any points into their second game. Jason Harper, Craig McBride and Johnny Craig absolutley dominated the midfield, but it was the inexperience at the back that perhaps caught the Blades out.

12/04/06 - Blades Look To Blackpool Cup 2006 |
Blades F.C. under-17s depart for Blackpool this Friday morning, for their third European tournament in four years. The Blades have played a total of twelve games in Europe so far, with Lewis Crothers, Craig McBride and Jason Harper having played in all of them. Despite the Blades team being severely weakened by several first-team players pulling out of the competition for various reasons, the East-Belfast side will still have four players from the team that won the Tongerlo Cup in Belgium in 2003. Under the name of Harland and Wolff, the Blades played in the Blackpool Cup last year. After some good performances and narrow defeats, they were unlucky to be knocked out in the group stage, despite recording wins against Rosyth Recreation and Invergordon FC. With the Blades on a poor run of form of late, with three defeats in their last three games, some restoration of pride from this season is a bare minimum for the Blades. For the players, there is an added bonus of numerous scouts being present at one of the biggest football competitions in the United Kingdom. Last year the tournament attracted teams such as Glasgow Celtic, Glasgow Rangers and Ajax Amsterdam. Hopefully the Blades will have a chance to at least get some experience against some of Europe's top youth teams, but there is no secret that Paul McMurray's team will be trying to bring the trophy back to Belfast, with last year's beaten finalists, Shankill Juniors not entering this time around. The Blades' tournament kicks-off with the group stage on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th April.
08/04/06 - Blades F.C. Youth 1-4 Upper Ardoyne |
|
A deserved win for Upper Ardoyne today as they overcame a Blades side which couldn't get their pass and move rythm going, as in recent games. Upper Ardoyne forced two early saves from Blades' keeper Lewis Crothers in the first 15 minutes. Firstly a volley parried by the 6ft 5in keeper and then a low drive diverted wide by the Blades' shot -stopper. The Blades then started to get into their stride, with the renewed confidence given by their goalkeeper. Ruiséal McKimm came close when he broke free to get one-on-one with the Ardoyne keeper. Then David Davies had a golden opportunity, but couldn't connect with the driven ball, when it got stuck in a puddle on its route to goal. The Blades went down before the break when some sloppy defending left space for a shot from the edge of the box, which cannoned off the crossbar back to an Ardoyne attacker who hammered home. Half-time 1-0 to Upper Ardoyne. There seemed to be hope for the East-Belfast club when Ruiséal McKimm equalised for the Blades on the 60 minute mark, but it ended up all in vein. Mark Tweedie made an excellent run down the right flank and the resulting ball in found top-scorer, McKimm who bundled the ball over the line. Disaster struck minutes later, when Marty Armstrong couldn't clear and the ball was slammed in from close range, 2-1. Then Lewis Crothers made two more saves, one tipped wide from a free-kick, and then 1 parried wide from a drive inside the box. Andrew Crozier was sent off before the third goal came for Ardoyne when Matthew Taylor diverted a cross into his own net, with an Ardoyne attacker sliding in. Game over for the Blades, and goal no.4 came when poor marking left an Ardoyne striker to slot past Crothers on a one-on-one. 4-1 and and an unbelievably poor result for the Blades. Another Cup Final goes begging after last season's Semi-Final defeat to Carnmonney Colts. Craig McBride tried to hold the midfield together in a composed display, but to no avail. The game was killed as a contest when Andrew Crozier was sent off at 2-1 for severable fouling offensive tackles and the Blades also seen Matthew Taylor depart for fighting. Without two first-teamers the Blades will go for victory against Chimney Corner next week for a place in the East Antrim League Plate Final. Before this, the Blades travel to Blackpool to play in the annual Blackpool Cup.
Blades Team vs Upper Ardoyne: Crothers, M Taylor, Morrow, Crozier, Dickie, Tweedie (Lemon), McBride, Patterson, Harper (Barklie), McKimm ( N Taylor), Davies (Millar) HT: 0-1 FT: 1-4 YC: Crozier RC: Crozier, M Taylor
07/04/06 - Resignation Sparks Further Probelms For East Antrim Youth League |
East Antrim Youth League Secretary, Davy Bell has resigned. Here is the full article courtesy of The Belfast Telegraph reported yesterday;

Football Junior Football: Resignation of Davy Bell
By Robert Fenton
06 April 2006: The latter was also responsible for an informative league website which he has now taken down. He also acts as the referees co-ordinator and claims that the whistlers have now withdrawn their services. An EGM has been called for April 30 but that in itself is highly contentious as it was not called by the General Committee which is the only body under the league's constitution with the power to do so. That effectively makes the EGM null and void and a waste of time for clubs travelling any distance. The league has come under criticism for some time, and their rule book is badly in need of an overhaul. The Northern Ireland Boys' FA, are working on a new constitution themselves and this will be available to all their members shortly.
07/04/06 - Crothers Picks Up Northern Ireland Cup Runner's Up Medal |
Lewis Crothers was involved in Grosvenor Grammar School's defeat at the hands of La Salle in today's Carnegie Northern Ireland Schools Cup Final at New Grosvenor Stadium, Lisburn Distillery. Crothers was on the bench as La Salle beat the reigning champions 2-0, despite Grosvenor probably edging the play. Several missed chances and two defensive lapses seen Grosvenor fail to retain the trophy. Lewis Crothers had been involved in previous rounds, but has had limited opportunities, to the excellent form of Crusaders FC and Northern Ireland u18s goalkeeper Aaron Hogg. Crothers also played last night for the Blades first team in their 3-1 South Antrim League Cup defeat at the hands of Dunmurry Rec. Crothers, struggling to overcome a calf injury from last Saturday was disappointed with his performance. Ruiseal McKimm got his first team debut and appeared for ten minutes up front, but found little opportunites to grab his first goal in a first-team shirt. Both Crothers and McKimm will be hoping that they can be on the winning side tomorrow in the Blades' East Antrim Cup Semi-Final against Upper Ardoyne.
01/04/06 - Blades F.C. Youth 0-2 Orangefield F.C. |
|
The Blades returned to their home pitch, Avoniel P.S. for the first time in since November, but it was in a poor state and a poor result followed. Luckily only a friendly, the Blades will need to perform far better in the next two weeks as they chase glory on four fronts. Orangefield did probably deserve a narrow win but the Blades, without regular first-teamers Craig Morrow and Ross Patterson played nowhere near their capapbility. The passing was poor, and apart from some good defending at times from Carl Barklie and Andrew Crozier there weren't manyn positives to take out of the game. Orangefield's first goal came midway through the first half when a drilled shot from inside the box thumped off Crothers and into the net, who will be disappointed he didn't do better. He did redeem himself in the second half with some impressive stops, but was judged to have conceded again, despite the ball not going in. With an Orangefield striker left with a simple tap-in, he blasted over from 6 yards but without any netting the goal stood. Matthew Taylor did force a decent save from the Orangefield keeper in the first half from a free-kick and came close again when he missed from inside the box. Apart from this game, there was more damaging news that Lewis Crothers picked up an injury playing for the first team. Crothers suffered a bruised bone and bleeding in his calf muscle and is a major doubt for the forthcoming games against Carniny, Upper Ardoyne and Chimney Corner. This comes at a time when the Blades have a very busy schedule with three domestic games in five days and the Blackpool Cup starting on 15th April.
Blades Team vs Orangefield: Crothers, M Taylor, Crozier, Barklie (Armstrong), Dickie, McBride, N Taylor (Millar), Craig, Harper, Tweedie, McKimm (Davies) HT: 0-1 FT: 0-2 YC: 0 RC: 0
31/03/06 - Cup Semi-Final Postponed |
| Tommorow's scheduled East Antrim Cup Semi-Final match against Upper Ardoyne has been postponed and is likely to be played in midweek. A friendly against Orangefield F.C. has been arranged, with a 10.30am kick-off at Avoniel P.S. to replace the cup fixture. | |
27/03/06 - Blades Still Chasing Honours On Three Fronts |
After losing 2-1 to Upper Ardoyne in their opening League Plate fixture, Saturday turned out to be a mixed day for the Blades. The Blades went into the weekend's game, knowing that a win for Carniny in the league at home to Chimney Corner would see the runner's up spot go to the Ballymena outfit. However it didn't go to plan for last year's league champions, and the Blades now have the chance to capatalise on their poor recent form. Carniny still have to travel to East Belfast to face the Blades, and a win for Paul McMurray's side will see the runner's up medals hanging round the Blades' players necks come the end of the season. Bitter rivals carrick Rangers were also in action on Saturday and surprisingly lost to Comber Rec 3-0 at Woodburn; the same team beaten by the Blades 2-0 last week. Two cup finals may still await them if they can beat Upper Ardoyne this Saturday in the East Antrim Cup Semi-Final at The Diamond and win against Chimney Corner in their final League Plate Group game. The next three weeks are going to be crucial for the former H&W side, and if they team can perform to the level they can play at, there will be no surprise if the Avoniel Trophy Cabinet looks more full come the end of the this year's campaign.
25/03/06 - Blades F.C. Youth 1-2 Upper Ardoyne |
|
Despite taking the lead at The Valley, the Blades fell to a comeback from Upper Ardoyne and lost their opening League Plate fixture. The omens weren't good for the Blades from the first whistle. The Blades line-up was missing Craig McBride (on the bench) and top scorer, Ruiseal McKimm, who didn't even make the squad. Upper Ardoyne should have taken the lead in the opening thirty seconds, but their close range shot went inches wide of the right post. The Blades never really got into their stride and will know a repeat performance in next week's Cup Semi-Final could leave them trophyless for a second season. They did however take the lead from the in form Mark Tweedie. When he cut in from the right flank and hit a delightful drilled finish into the far bottom corner. The Blades then had a Nathan Taylor chipped goal disallowed for offside. Then came Ardoyne's first goal. Hugely disappointing for Lewis Crothers, when a shot was hit from 30 yards. Crothers got two hands to it but could not stop it going in the top corner. A bad error by the experienced keeper. Ardoyne weren't settling for a draw and went in search for more goals. Crothers saving a one-on-one and a couple of very close efforts. the Blades were unsettled and couldn't get into any sort of rythm. At half-time Craig McBride was brought on as sub for the first time this season and looked to change the game. However the Blades midfield couldn't find any space to work with, and a hard-working Upper Ardoyne side seemed desperate for the result. Ross Patterson had two efforts from set pieces that didn't hit the target and Mark Tweedie and Jason Harper tried to get that elusive second goal. The Blades keeper was forced into action a couple of times before the winning goal for Ardoyne. From a corner kick, Crothers rose to fist the ball, but only found an Ardoyne attacker unmarked on the edge of the box. the Ardoyne attacker fired past the fingertips of the Blades keeper, to complete his day of misery. The Blades searched for a goal but but to no avail. Both goals were largely down to the Blades no.1, but it has to be said that outfield they did not force Ardoyne into any real pressure and probably didn't deserve a win. Qualification for the final rests on the Blades beating Chimney Corner in the second game in the group. The Blades play Ardoyne again next week to gain a place in this year's East Antrim Cup Final, after losing for the first time in seven games, and conceding more than one goal in a game for the first time in ten weeks.
Blades Team vs Upper Ardoyne: Crothers, Armstrong (McBride), M Taylor, Crozier, Dickie, Patterson, Craig, Morrow, Tweedie, N Taylor (Davies), Harper (Millar) Unused Subs: Young, Barklie HT: 1-1 FT: 1-2 Goalscorer: Tweedie YC: Morrow, Crozier RC: 0
18/03/03 - Blades F.C. Youth 2-0 Comber Rec |
|
Another win for sees the Blades, who are unbeaten in six games, go within two points of league champions Carniny, in the race for second. The Blades play Carniny in their last league fixture, and will be feeling confident of catching the Ballymena side, after the 3-1 win to the Blades at Ballymena Showgrounds. It was ahrd to believe coming into this fixture that Comber Rec beat the Blades 5-0 the last time the two teams met, way back in October. No chance of a similar scoreline this time however, with the Blades on an impressive run of form, with Lewis Crothers conceding just three goals in his last six games, recording three clean sheets. The Blades did take a bit of time to get into this game, with a strong wind provin a barrier to any balls forward. Comber Rec in fact had a few chances, going close on a couple of occasions and Crothers saving well at the feet of an attacker. But the Blades didn't seem to have to get into top gear, as class was the true difference between 3rd and 4th in the table. A teamsheet missing Craig Morrow and captain Ross Patterson coped with relative ease. Martin Armstrong and Ryan Dickie were impressive down the flanks, and the attacking play of Johnny Craig, Mark Tweedie, Jason Harper, Craig McBride and Ruiseal McKimm was causing all sorts of problems for Comber. Nathan Taylor was also a hassle up front and the Comber defence struggled with his physical play. However it was Taylor who missed two golden opportunities in the first half, when he fluffed two good chances wide. The Blades however were to create more chances and late in the first half, a great passing move got the first goal. Martin Armstrong hit a brilliant chipped ball into Tweedie, who found McKimm, who stabbed home to net his 14th goal of the campaign. The Blades were then angered at the ease of the Comber players falling to ground, over what looked like several legitimate tackles. By the end of the day, Crothers, Crozier, Craig and Harper had all entered the referee's book. This didn't take anything away from the scoreline though, as the Blades looked to Crothers' long kicks upfield to create pressure. The ball was dropping on the edge of the Rec's penalty area. The Blades second came when McKimm returned the earlier favour, playing in the on form Tweedie to grab his fourth of the season. It was effectively game over, but Comber Rec did put pressure on the Blades for the remainder and squandered some decent chances, but couldn't find any goals. The Blades now have a warm-up game next Saturday against Loughside, before their East Antrim Cup Semi-Final against Upper Ardoyne.
Blades Team vs Comber Rec: Crothers, Armstrong, M Taylor, Crozier, Dickie, Craig, Harper (Young), McBride (Lemon), Tweedie, N Taylor, McKimm (Millar) HT: 1-0 FT: 2-0 Goalscorers: McKimm, Tweedie YC: Crothers, Crozier, Craig, Harper RC: 0
04/03/06 - Crothers And McKimm Inspire 2nds Comeback |
| Blades F.C. II were away to Banbridge A.F.C. II today and fell behind to two first-half goals. Ruiseal McKimm was playing left-wing and Crothers in goals in the first period. The change was made at the break for McKimm and Crothers to play up front. And for the second game in a row the decision changed the game with the Blades scoring three second half goals in a dramatic comeback. According to coach Mark Bowers, the introduction of Crothers up front alongside McKimm ' changed the game in the Blades favour.' Crothers put his body about and was a real nuisance to the Banbridge backline with his height. Crothers came close immediately after his introduction, and a few minutes later grabbed one back, when he fired in from an acute angle. He also set up the equaliser for McKimm who slotted home with an neat drilled finish. McKimm and Crothers then both had goals ruled out for offside, but the winner came in the 89th minute as Darren Warnock powered home a header to leave Banbridge stunned. | |
03/03/06 - Carniny Game Off Due To Weather |

The league has also released the dates for most of the club's remaining matches this season. 25/02/06 - Chimney Corner 1-1 Blades F.C. Youth |
|
A frustrating draw at Foundry Lane for the Blades in a game that they controlled from start to finish, but just couldn't take their chances. However the Blades moved up to third place in the league table, as Carrick Rangers beat Upper Ardoyne to virtually confirm their name on the East Antrim Youth League winners list. There was a late worry over Lewis Crothers' fitness with an injured ankle, with sub goalkeeper Matthew Gillham also out injured with a ligament problem, but Crothers did play in the end. The Blades didn't get started early and Chimney Corner took full advantage, scoring five minutes in through a well hit shot from close range. Crothers got a fingertip to it but it ended up zipping in. The Blades seemed stunned, but the goal prompted an onslought until the final whistle with the Blades failing to convert numerous chances. However on 15 minutes, Nathan Taylor bagged his second goal in a Blades shirt with a sweet half volley drilled into the bottom left corner. A deserved equaliser for the Blades, who had already went close through Ruiséal McKimm. However for all their dominance for the remainder of the game they could not find that elusive winning goal. At half-time the 2004 league champions went in with most thinking it was only a matter of time before the points were rapped up. The Blades came out the same in the second period, outplaying Corner, and went close through Ross Patterson from a free-kick. McKimm also came close again before he thought he had scored the winner, before his goal was ruled out for handball after a neat finish over the keeper. Mark Tweedie, Nathan Taylor, McKimm, Craig McBride, Ross Patterson, Jason Harper and later David Davies all tried to find the winning strike. Craig McBride was substituted midway through the second half for Johnny Craig and looked clearly unhappy. David Davies also came on fro Ruiseal McKimm, who had perhaps been the main threat to Chimney Corner with his pace. Davies got stuck in and came close to getting the winner, but Corner's keeper stood in his way. Some dangerous corners were driven ina cross the six-yard box, but nobody could get the vital touch to divert it into the net. The Blades scrapped until the end but to no avail. The Blades can however move close to second place Carniny, with a win over them next Saturday at the Valley. Carrick Rangers have moved six points clear and victory in any one of their last three games will land them the league title. However, the Blades still have honours to play for with the Blackpool Cup, Knockout Cup and League Plate and will look to add their trophy cabinet by the end of the season.

18/02/06 - Blades F.C. Youth 1-1 Carrick Rangers Colts |
Carrick Rangers left Inverary the happier team as they know they have one hand on the league titile, but the Blades ran the champions elect very close today. The Blades' first eleven included a number of surprises, with Lewis Crothers up front, Andrew Crozier in midfield, and Matthew Gillham in goals. Also, Ross Patterson and Craig Morrow were left on the bench, and Jason Harper and Ruiséal McKimm were injured. It was the worst start possible, with carrick scoring in the every first minute. Matthew Gillham should have dealt with a corner, but stood rooted to his line, and the ball was headed in from close range. The Blades couldn't forge any chances of their own, and Crothers didn't have any service to use his height. Nathan Taylor and Mark Tweedie struggled to get involved and the Blades were pinned back for much of the opening exchanges. Also, the 4-3-3 formation gave the Blades a lack of solidility. The team was reshuffled soon after though on 20 minutes. Matthew Gillham was clattered trying to catch a cross, and Lewis Crothers went into goal. Craig Morrow also came on for Matthew Gillham, and slotted into the heart of the Blades defence. The Blades then got slightly more joy and had a few half chances but didn't really look threatening. Crothers looked comfortable on crosses and was forced into action, tipping an overhead kick round the post. At half-time the Blades were still in touch with the Carrickfergus side, and needed a change. That change was made when Ross Patterson came on at half time for the unfit Andrew Crozier. From half-time the home side looked much better and perhaps deserved more than their 1-1 draw. Johnny Craig and Patterson looked too good in midfield and had to be specially man-marked by the Carrick midfield. This left gaps elsewhere, and Craig McBride looked to exploit it with some surging runs down the left flank. Nathan Taylor also came close powering his way through. At the back Ryan Dickie was one of the top performers and looked extremely solid, forming a barrier to the Carrick strikeforce. Mark Tweedie started getting runs at the Carrick defence, and everything looked better for the Blades. However Carrick were restricted to counter attacks, that they came close to scoring with. Lewis Crothers however was on top form to deny any more goals flying into the Blades net. This left the Blades attacking players more license to go at Carrick, and after some substantial pressure, finally the equalising goal came in the 75th minute. Craig McBride pouncing on a drilled corner and stabbing home from close-range. The Blades felt they deserved the three points that would question Carrick's title challenge, and they got their golden opportunity to get the win when the ball fell to Marty Armstrong inside the box with no real pressure. Armstrong tried to drill it home with the outside of his boot, but instead the ball ended up going straight at the Carrick keeper, who had looked unconvincing all day. However it ended 1-1, with Carrick looking firm favourites to lift the East Antrim Youth League Trophy. The Blades are still in contention for a second place finish and will look to get back to winning ways next Saturday against Chimney Corner at Foundry Lane.

16/02/06 - Pair Doubtful For Carrick Clash |
Blades F.C. Youth could be without their top scorers from the past two seasons this week. Jason Harper and Ruiseal McKimm are major doubts for Saturday's home game against league leaders Carrick Rangers. Last season's top scorer, Harper wasn't at training tonight and looks likely to miss out with a mouth injury. This season's current top scorer Ruiséal McKimm has been struggling to overcome a serious chest infection all week and sat out of training after starting the warm-up. McKimm has netted 7 times for the Blades u17s this term and is also second top goalscorer for the 2nds with 6 goals for them too. This comes as a big blow to the Blades who have been on top form in recent weeks. However the East Belfast outfit will still be confident of getting a result at Inverary, and prevent Carrick Rangers getting one hand on the league trophy. The Blades also have an outside chance of still winning the league, but anything but a win on Saturday and they will be firmly looking to concentrate on the cup competitions. Blades F.C. Youth vs Carrick Rangers Colts kicks off this Saturday (18th Feb) with a 10.30am kick-off.
11/02/06 - Blades F.C. Youth 6-1 Upper Ardoyne |
|
Another convincing win today for the Blades' third win on the bounce. The Blades were simply too good for a hard working Upper Ardoyne side at The Valley. The Blades' quick 'pass and move' football is what is ripping up defences across the league of late and it was no different today. The Blades were in front early on through the influential Ross Patterson, as he clipped in the first. 2-0 a few minutes later as Patterson grabbed his brace with a surging run and superb finish drilled into the bottom left hand corner. A dispute followed over the referee's decision-making on a throw-in, which looked as if though the match would be finished at 2-0. But the game eventually went on, and the Blades looked rampant in front of goal for the remainder. Ruiséal Mckimm bagged his seventh goal of the season to make it three. He controlled a good ball by Matthew Taylor before advancing bast the Ardoyne keeper and slotting home. The Blades used a number of substitutions during the game, which seemed to pay off. David Davies scored a tap-in to make it four, before Ardoyne grabbed one back. A good finish in the bottom- right corner. But the Blades looked for more. Nathan Taylor got his first goal in a Blades shirt, when his brother Matthew picked him out, and he headed past the Ardoyne keeper from a yard out. Another substitution seen Ross Patterson come off after a fine display with Johnny Craig in the middle of the park. With Matthew Gillham getting a start in goals, Lewis Crothers was rested to the bench, but appeared at centre-back towards the end of the first-half. But it was a long time later that he completed the rout, powering home a header from a corner kick, in the top corner. A very impressive performance from the Blades today beating the team they play in the Knockout Cup Semi-Final very convincingly. Matthew Gillham made some good stops during the game, but picked up a slight injury that prevented him from taking goal kicks. Criag Morrow was as usual solid at the back, pairing with Carl Barklie in the first half who also played well. David Young came on in the second half and faced little problems. Craig McBride notched up his 16th game of the season, and is now the only player to have played for the Blades in every game this season, and perhaps will have one eye on breaking Lewis Crothers' record of 36 consecutive appearances. Next up for the Blades is a home game against league leaders and arch-rivals Carrick Rangers Colts, who won 3-1 away to champions Carniny today.
Blades Team vs Upper Ardoyne: Gillham, M Taylor, Morrow, Barklie (Crothers), Dickie, Patterson (Young), Craig, McBride (Lemon), Tweedie (Armstrong), McKimm (N Taylor), Millar (Davies) HT: 3-0 FT: 6-1 Goalscorers: Patterson (2), McKimm, Davies, N Taylor, Crothers YC: 0 RC: 0
04/02/06 - Carniny Youth F.C. 1-3 Blades F.C. Youth |
|
A very impressive win for the Blades today, as they played the East Antrim Youth League Champions off their home pitch. The game was played at a pitch that had poor visibility, due to dense fog and the kick-off was in doubt, but the game eventually got the go-ahead. The Blades started off with a 4-3-3 formation, but in the second half they reverted back to a more solid 4-4-2, and it was the right decision. The away side got straight into the Ballymena side from the start, but it was Carniny who had some good chances early on, against the run of play. They had two chances hit straight at Crothers and later a one-on-one also saved by the Blades keeper. Matthew Taylor was impressive at right-back and looked solid throughout. Ross Patterson was also on top form, with his usual driving runs and neat passing. Jason Harper and Craig McBride also played well in the middle of the park, showing some good link up play. But the first goal was scored by Mark Tweedie after some substantial pressure in the first half. Tweedie scored his third goal in three games with a great chipped finish, straight after Carniny missed a great chance in a one-on-one. Aaron Hill was brought on up front for his second appearance and looked dangerous, setting up the Blade's second when he surged down the right flank and cut the ball back for Jason Harper to slam home for his fifth of the season. Blades didn't sit back and protect their lead, but searched for more goals and showed their dominance over Carniny, firstly forcing a great save from the Carniny keeper, and then with the third goal. Jason Harper let fly with a long-range bullet which hit the roof of the net. A fine goal by last season's top scorer. The game wasn't over yet though. Andrew Crozier was sent off after tempers flared up and he punched a Carniny player, who pushed Ross Patterson. This gave Carniny hope of getting something out of the game with a one man advantage. They grabbed one goal back straight from a corner, when Ryan Dickie missed the ball completely attempting a clearance, and it flew in at the near post. Carniny looked for more, but Crothers stood in their way, first tipping a close range drive wide, and then gettin down at the feet of Carniny player on the line, to stop a certain tap in, recieving a kick to the head. The Blades hung on and claimed their first win over Carniny this season. Good performances right the way through the team from keeper to strikers, with Ruiseal McKimm having a hand in two of the goals. Craig Morrow was solid as usual, and Andrew Crozier had a good comeback from injuring his ankle playing for the seconds three weeks ago. Carniny had a man sent off as well late on for swingin at McBride, who wisely didn't react.

28/01/06 - Blades F.C. Youth 1-0 Chimney Corner |
|
A deserved victory for the Blades today, as they battle hard for a 1-0 victory. They lined up with a 4-3-3 formation and Nathan Taylor making his debut at centre-half, with a quite impressive debut. The Blades started off very brightly, and their free-flowing football was too much for Chimney Corner in the opening 15 minutes. Wave after wave of attacks pinned Corner back and they were thankful to their goalkeeper for staying in the game. The only goal of the game came not long after this period. The Blades won a corner and it was only cleared to the advancing Mark Tweedie, who struck it sweetly and it fired in past the despairing keeper from the edge of the box. A fine strike gave Tweedie his second goal in two games and was the vital goal that secured all three points for the Blades. However, Chimney Corner responded and forged out some chances of their own, as the Blades seemed to lose their rythm momentarily. Corner couldn't find the net though, as Crothers stood in their way, firstly beating away a close-range effort and then saving with his feet on a one-on-one. For the remainder of the half the Blades were restricted to long-range efforts and Ross Patterson came close on a few occasions. Half-time 1-0. At half-time Paul McMurray gave Aaron Hill the chance to impress, with his debut up front, coming on for Carl Barklie. Hill looked good in the air and came close to getting a debut goal when his shot hit the side-netting. The Blades again forced the Corner keeper into a number of saves as they pressed for their second, but left some gaps at the back and the away side nearly took advantage, but their finishing let them down. Mark Tweedie looked back to his best and Nathan Taylor gave a good account of himself, after being moved up into midfield. He had a few efforts that were well placed, but lacked any real power. On the flank his brother Matthew was never troubled at right-back. Alan Millar also hit the bar before being subbed off for David Young. Overall the Blades were well worth the victory and could have had more goals. Next up is a trip to Ballymena to play league champions Carniny, at the Showgrounds.

27/01/06 - Saturday's Game Switched To Inverary |
| This week's forthcoming league home fixture against Chimney Corner has been switched from Avoniel P.S. to Inverary. This follows the Avoniel P.S. pitch not reaching playable standards. New signings Aaron Hill and Nathan Taylor are available for tomorrow's game and could be set to play their debuts for the Blades. Craig Morrow is also back from suspension, for a Blades side that is almost back to full-strength. |
23/01/06 - Taylor And Hill Put Pen To Paper |
| Blades F.C. Youth have completed the signings of Nathan Taylor and Aaron Hill. Both will be available for selection this week for the league game against Chimney Corner. Reflecting on the two signings, manager Paul McMurray said the club is 'Very pleased to have made the signings and the club is looking to make another couple of big signings before the end of the transfer window.' The Blades are at home this week to Chimney Corner, but they are considering whether to switch the tie to Orangefield Park, due to the state of the Avoniel pitch. | |
22/01/06 - Blades Forfit Comber Rec Game |
| Blades F.C. Youth forfitted yesterday's arranged league match at Avoniel, as the pitch was deemed unplayable. The Blades lost the three points and the result was recorded as 3-0 to Comber Rec. Blades F.C. Youth are questioning whether to change their home pitch to Orangefield Park, and will need to make a quick decision, as they are scheduled to play Chimney Corner at Avoniel next week. The club's league title hope have now all but disappeared, due to poor preparation. It is the second trophy given up by the Blades in the last two seasons off the field. Last year H&W were disqualified from the League Cup, after a mix up in running costs, and forfitted their final game against Carrick Rangers 3-0, despite having a chance to still win the trophy. It's a disappointing conclusion for the Blades who were set to play the game against Comber Rec, but the Rec management team refused, incase of the match causing any injuries due to the state of the Avoniel pitch. | |
20/01/06 - Blades Close To Two More Signings |
|
Blades F.C. Youth are close to adding two more additions to their squad for the remainder of the season. As the transfer window draws to a close this week, Aaron Hill and Kyle Leeman have been training with the Blades and are expected to sign this Sunday. Kyle Leeman previously played for the club in their treble winning season of 2003/04. Both players were in a Dungoyne Boys side managed by paul McMurray before he joined the Blades, along with current goalkeeper Lewis Crothers and ex-captain Ross Kane. Both Hill and Leeman should be available next week for the game against Chimney Corner, and will provide good competiton for places ahead of the Blades KO Cup Semi-Final against Upper Ardoyne.
15/01/06 - Taylor Signs For Blades |
| Blades F.C. Youth today have signed striker Nathan Taylor. Taylor is the brother of right-back Matthew and used to play for Orangefield F.C. Taylor will be available for next weeks game against Comber Rec at Avoniel P.S. He will also travel with the squad to the Blackpool Cup 2006 at Easter. | |
14/01/06 - Carrick Rangers Colts 3-2 Blades F.C. Youth |
|
A disappointing result for the Blades, despite them being the better team for periods of the match. Craig Morrow and Johnny Craig were missing from the squad, but Craig McBride was included despite injuring his foot in midweek. The Blades started quite brightly but the offside line proved a barrier with several offside decisions. Carrick created a good chance early on, which forced Crothers to make a smart one handed save. The Blades had chances of their own and had two goals disallowed. Both were scored by Ruiséal McKimm, one was ruled out for offside and the other was cancelled for McKimm being judged to have handled the ball. Both decisions were somewhat dubious to say the least. The early good play, was forgotten when Carrick opened the scoring around 35 minutes in. A quick free-kick was swung in with the Blades not ready and the Carrick striker latched on to it and finished superbly with the outside of his boot. The second half started evenly with both sides playing some decent football in the middle of the park. Craig McBride and Mark Tweedie missed great chances and hit straight at the keeper on one-on-ones, although McBride was certainly fouled by the Carrick keeper, but the referee didn't give it. Carrick got a second however with about half an hour left, another great finish from their no.9. Paul McMurray made some changes shortly after with Lewis Crothers going up front, Gillham going into nets and Chris McClean making another appearance. The changes seem to work, and straight away Crothers played a neat chip into Harper who forced a save from the Carrick keeper. Moments later the Blades grabbed one back through Mark Tweedie after some good pressure, Tweedie slotted home for his first goal of the season after McKimm played him through. Carrick however got another five minutes later with a shot from 25 yards, which Gillham should have saved. It slipped through his hands and into the back of the net. The Blades didn't lie down though and the most unlikely of scorers grabbed one back. Lewis Crothers scored his best goal in a Blades shirt. He chased down a loose ball, out-strengthed the Carrick centre-back, ran past him to the by-line, skipped past their full back and drived it in of the far post. The Blades then tried desperately to get another but ran out of time and it remained at 3-2. Some good performances by Crothers, Harper, Patterson and Tweedie were overshadowed by the fact that the league title seems destined for another year away from Avoniel.
Blades Team vs Carrick Rangers Colts: Crothers, Armstrong (Millar), Dickie, Taylor, Crozier, Patterson, McBride (Gillham), Harper, Tweedie, Davies (McClean), McKimm HT: 0-1 FT: 2-3 Goalscorers: Tweedie, Crothers YC: Patterson RC: 0
13/01/06 - Duo Missing For Carrick Clash |
| This Saturday sees the Blades travel to third-placed Carrick at Woodburn. Anything other than a win for the Blades this week, and the league will be virtually over. The trip to Woodburn will not include Craig Morrow and Craig McBride. Morrow sits out, serving the second game of his 2-match suspension picked up against Chimney Corner. Meanwhile McBride may well miss the game with a foot injury. Paul McMurray is expected to make a number of changes to the squad that faced Upper Ardoyne last week. A win for the Blades will send them to joint third in the table. Three points for Carrick, and they might still have a realistic chance of catching league champions Carniny, after beating them 3-2 last week. The match kicks off at 10.30am, Woodburn, Carrickfergus. | |
12/01/06 - Murphy Parts With Blades |
Blades F.C. Youth parted with midfielder Gary Murphy after picking up 5 yellow and 2 red cards this season, after playing just four games. Murphy signed for the club in August 2003, originally as cover for Ross Kane and Lewis Crothers, at the heart of the H&W defence. He was a member of the treble winning squad of 2003/04 and was captain of the team at the Blackpool Cup last year. After a lengthly spell out with a serious ligament injury, Murphy became a regular in the team in centre-midfield last season and recieved the captain's arm band for part of the season. He also scored three goals last year, one against Islandmagee F.C. and a brace against Castletown Eagles. However his departure is mainly down to his questionable temperament. Murphy was currently suspended, after being sent off against Chimney Corner in the Blades' Cup Quarter-Final at The Diamond. Murphy also appeared for the Blades' 2nds this year twice earlier in the season and could still appear for the 2nd team this year. It has also been confirmed Emmet McKimm, brother of Ruiséal will be part of the Blackpool Cup team for this year. Emmet has previously has already played for the Blades this season twice in friendlies in August.
07/01/06- Upper Ardoyne 0-0 Blades F.C. Youth |
|
The Blades dropped more points today at The Diamond, but with Carniny losing to Carrick Rangers, the league title is still within their reach. The Blades started with Lewis Crothers, Jason Harper, Alan Millar and Ruiséal McKimm on the bench and fielded several players who have not played many agmes this year. The Blades attempted to tire out Upper Ardoyne in the first half with some neat passing moves. With such a strong bench, the Blades gave everything in the first half and opened up Ardoyne time and time again. Matthew Taylor swung in some good crosses and found a lot of space down the right flank, but the forward line of Mark Tweedie, Chris McClean and Marty Armstrong could do everything but score. At the break Paul McMurray decided do bring on some first team regulars in Lewis Crothers, Jason Harper and Ruiséal McKimm. Alan Millar was also brought on later at the unfamiliar position of right-back. All these changes seemed to disrupt the Blades' rythm, but Jason Harper and Ross Patterson were causing Ardoyne problems. Upper Ardoyne had a man sent off, but still looked extremely solid as they piled men behind the ball and went on the counter attack at every opportunity. The Blade's found it harder to break them down but did have several chances with Ross Patterson and Ruiséal McKimm coming close. Crothers, in the Blades' goal was forced into making a number of saves, as Ardoyne looked to grab a late winner. Ryan Dickie got a yellow card for a very late and high tackle and McKimm also got booked for up-ending the Ardoyne keeper. The end result was probably a fair one, and Upper Ardoyne have vastly improved since their opening few matches of the season. The Blades however are on inconsistent form, and go into a crucial match against Carrick Rangers next week that could put them right back in the title race.
Blades Team vs Upper Ardoyne: Gillham (Crothers), Taylor, Dickie, Crozier (c), Young (Millar), Craig, Patterson, McBride, McClean (Harper), Armstrong (McKimm), Tweedie (Davies) HT: 0-0 FT: 0-0 YC: Dickie, McKimm RC: 0
31/12/05 - Blades F.C. Youth 2-1 Chimney Corner |
|
The Blades progress to the semi-finals of the EA KO Cup after beating Chimney Corner 2-1 at The Diamond today. The first-half was very one sided with the Blades dominating both the possession and goal scoring chances. Chimney Corner rarely ventured out of their own half and could only manage a couple of misplaced shots on goal. The Blades created chance after chance with the wind behind them and finally broke through just before half time, when Ruiséal McKimm fired in his sixth goal of the season. McKimm brought the ball down, turned and then unleashed a half volley into the top corner to put the Blades in front. Half-time 1-0. Gary Murphy came on for Mark Tweedie in the second half as the Blades looked to further their lead. They started well and created a few chances before Craig McBride scored a fine goal, when he skilfully turned his man and cooly slotted home past the keeper. Everything was going to plan until Gary Murphy got his second yellow for two bad tackles. Then Crothers in goal was forced into action with a fine save, tipping a goal-bound effort wide. Moments later Chimney Corner grabbed one back, after a Chimney Corner striker skipped past Andrew Crozier and then chipped the advancing Crothers. Craig Morrow attempted to stop the ball flying in when he handled it before he was red carded and a penalty was given. The penalty was poorly hit, but Crothers couldn't get his body behind it and the ball spun into the net. The last 20 minutes the Blades were pushed all the way with ten men, but Chimney Corner couldn't find the crucial goal. Good performances from Ryan Dickie, Ross Patterson and Johnny Craig helped the Blades' cause and they are now one step closer to adding to the trophy cabinet this season.

| The Boxing Day Friendly Match between Blades F.C. u17s and Balades F.C. II has been cancelled. Blades F.C. u17s will return to training on Thursday 29th December 2005 at Henry Jones and return to action next Saturday against Chimney Corner in the Knockout Cup Quarter Final. | |
19/12/05 - Boxing Day Friendly Arranged |
As warm-up for New Year's Eve cup semi-final, the Blades have arranged a friendly for 26th December at Avoniel. Blades F.C. Youth u17s will play Blades F.C. II, with a 11.00am kick-off expected to be announced. Blades u17s currently lie 4th in the East Antrim Youth League after their defeat against Carrick Rangers at the weekend. Blades F.C. II are also challenging for the league title in their respective league, the South Antrim League. Ruiséal McKimm has scored 6 goals for the Seconds this season and 5 for the u17s. He is one of a number of players who have turned out for the senior sides. Lewis Crothers has appeared five times for the first team and twice for the Seconds. Andrew Crozier has been a regular in the Seconds, and Gary Murphy and Jason Harper have also played for Mark Bowers and Colin Rainey's side. The Seconds won 4-3 on Saturday against1sts of Lisburn. Andrew Crozier, Ruiseal McKimm and Lewis Crothers were all involved, with Crothers playing the unfamiliar position of right-wing. There will be no training for the u17s this Thursday, as a trip to Dundonald Ice Bowl has been arranged for 7.00pm.
17/12/05 - Carrick Rangers Colts 4-1 Blades F.C. Youth |
A win for the Blades could have seen off Carrick's title challenge, but instead the Blades lost a half time lead to slip to a 4-1 defeat. The first half was a battle from both sides to gain the lead. Carrick probably had the best of the chances and in the opening few minutes missed two very good opportunities that went narrowly wide. The Blades then looked more solid, with some superb defending from Craig Morrow and Carl Barklie in particular. Crothers was then called into action when Carrick got through just outside the 6-yard box. The shot was pulled across the face of goal, and Crothers tipped it wide before Taylor played it out for a corner. The Blades showed some neat passing and were unlucky not to get through and were flagged offside on numerous occassions. Then the opening goal, when Ruiséal McKimm reacted to a looping ball, and headed the ball of a Carrick defender, which nestled in the far corner of the net. Carrick tried to build some pressure before half time but couldn't break through the back-line of Taylor, Barklie, Crozier, Morrow and the advancing Crothers in goal. The Blades came close to furthering their lead when a low drive was spilled by the Carrick goalkeeper, but no-one was on hand to finish. At half-time the Blades went in knowing they would have to improve their performance in the second-half to build on their 1-0 lead. The Blades started off the second half the better team, with Ross Patterson driving through the middle of the park and causing Carrick all sorts of problems. Then Carrick got the break-through they needed and in the resulting one-on-one a cool finish from the Carrick striker brought the scores level. For the remainder of the game Carrick looked the better, and a Blades team without several first team players struggled to create any chances to put them back in front. carrick's second goal came from a free-kick floated into the back post. Poor marking allowed a Carrick attacker to rise high and power in a header from 3 yards, giving the Blades keeper no chance. The Blades looked shocked, but things were to get worse, despite efforts from Jason Harper and Ross Patterson to take the game to Carrick. Goal number three was a soft goal to give away, as the Blades wall was being made the ball was belted through it at Crothers who should have saved, but could only help it on into the back of the net. Carrick now were completely on top and forced two neat saves from Crothers form a 1-on-1 and a drive tipped wide, before he was took off in a number of substitutions. The game was now over as a contest, and Matthew Gillham conceded number four late on, when after some strong pressure and good passing Carrick slotted home in the far bottom, right-hand corner. In all a terrible result for the Blades, but with a full team expected back for the cup tie with Chimney Corner and many big league games still to go, they are not out of the running for silverware this season yet.

15/12/05 - Carrick Preview |
This Saturday sees the Blades return to the home of arch rivals, Carrick Rangers. The game always stands out on the fixture list, but this one could be the most important game that both sides have played in. The Blades currently lie third in the league table, but have games in hand on both Comber Rec and Carniny. Carrick Rangers find themselves fourth and are already nine points adrift of Carniny, but a win could see them back in the title race. Carrick have had three defeats on the bounce, and last week were surprisingly turned over by bottom of the league side, Upper Ardoyne in the EAYL Knockout Cup. A ppor result this time against the Blades and it could be almost all over for Carrick's season. Meanwhile, the Blades are looking to close the gap on Carniny and end Carrick's title challenge, with a win of their own. The squad travelling to Carrick is not at full strength, with Ryan Dickie, Gary Murphy and David Young all suspended, and Mark Tweedie doubtful, but the Blades have the psychological edge, having the better head-to-head record and winning the last time the two clubs met last month, 2-1. bladesfcyouth.co.nr takes a look at some of the past meetings between the two clubs.

4/12/05 - Fixtures Announced |
|
As we know, due to the death of footballing legend, George Best, all of yesterday's fixtures were postponed. This has caused a re-shuffle in the league's fixtures and as a result, the Blades will not have any fixture in next week's round of matches also. However the club have been notified of the new fixture list, and the Blades' next game is another tough away game to Carrick Rangers Colts. This will be followed by a quarter-final cup tie against Chimney Corner and a league game against Upper Ardoyne in the new year. 19/11/05 - Upper Ardoyne 0-1 Blades F.C. Youth |
After the victory against Carrick Rangers Colts, the Blades registered another three points today at the Valley. The Blades got off to a flying start early on, when the ball fell to Craig Morrow, and he got his first goal of the season with an excellant finish into the top-right hand corner. This came after a lot of pressure on Upper Ardoyne. The Ardoyne side tried to exploit weaknesses on the counter attack, but either found the influential Craig Morrow or the advancing Crothers in their way. The Blades had numerous opportunities to increase their lead but misses from McKimm, Patterson, and Tweedie kept the score at 1-0 at half time. The second half was one of frustation for the Blades as yet again they could not find that elusive second goal. Again McKimm and Patterson came close, and a spectacular drive from Jason Harper was tipped wide by the Ardoyne keeper, just when it seemed destined for the top corner. Ardoyne grew in confidence, due to the score remaining 1-0, and pressed the Blades hard until the final whistle. However their best chances ended up in the arms of Crothers, and none really troubled the Blades keeper. Johnny Craig went off injured early on in the second half and was replaced by Carl Barklie, who had an impressive game. Ryan Dickie was a firm contender for the man of the match, with some brilliant defending down the left flank, and Craig Morrow won everything in the centre. Craig McBride was subbed off after not really being able to impose himself on the match, and David Davies replaced him, working hard. A deserved three points for the Blades, who host league champions Carniny at Avoniel next week. Gary Murphy and David Young will be available for selection again in the Cup game vs Chimney Corner, after both being sent off in the last match-up between Carniny and the Blades.

18/11/05 - Around The Grounds |
This week's round of games could have a huge affect on the outcome of this year's East Antrim Youth League, even at this early stage. The biggest fixture of the day has to be Carrick Rangers vs Carniny at Woodburn. A week after Carrick were beaten on their home turf by the Blades, they play host to league champions Carniny Youth. Comber Rec and Chimney Corner also go head to head, and the league title race could be thrown wide open tomorrow if Carniny fail to win, and Chimney Corner and the Blades pick up all three points.
Fixture List - 19th November 2005
Blades F.C. vs Upper Ardoyne, The Valley
Carrick Rangers Colts vs Carniny Youth F.C., Woodburn

18/11/05 - Upper Ardoyne Preview |
|
bladesfcyouth.co.nr takes a look at the past meetings between the two clubs.
Harland and Wolff Youth 1-1 Upper Ardoyne, Inverary, EAYL - 2004/05
H&W took the lead through an Andrew Crozier header, but Ardoyne got late equalizer on a drenched Inverary pitch.
Upper Ardoyne 2-2 Harland and Wolff Youth, Six Mile Water, EAYL - 2004/05
McKimm overhead kick and a Harper strike put H&W 2-0 up, but poor defending and a late goalkeeping error brought the game to a draw.
Harland and Wolff Youth 7-1 Upper Ardoyne. The Valley, EAYL - 2004/05
Braces from Millar and Harper, an og , Tweedie finish and Crothers pen and a brilliant performance from Gary Murphy brushed Ardoyne aside with relative ease, despite a consolation goal late on.
Blades F.C. Youth 4-1 Upper Ardoyne, Avoniel P.S., EAYL - 2005/06
A long-range strike stunned the Blades, but McKimm levelled the score and then a Patterson hat-trick stole the show.
The Blades need all three points again this week, and look firm favourites against the team rooted to the bottom of the table, with no points all season. The Blades will know however that Upper Ardoyne can prove to be a potential slip-up , as they learnt last year dropping 4 points.
17/11/05 - Blades Make Club Statement |
|
To: Carrick Rangers Colts
In Reference To: Alleged comment made by Blades F.C. u17s Manager, Paul McMurray
'Following the clubs recent deserved victory over Carrick Rangers, players from both clubs visited the Blades u17 website, www.bladesfcyouth.co.nr and traded nasty comments. One such comment was alleged to have been made by Blades Manager Paul McMurray regarding a member of Carrick's coaching staff and his son who plays for the club. These remarks were definately not written by Paul McMurray, but by someone else. Whilst there is no love lost between Mr McMurray and Carrick Rangers F.C. , anyone that knows him will know he would not make such vile remarks. Anyone who has read these remarks is not to be offended, but to disregard them as utter rubbish,'

12/11/05 - Blades F.C. Youth 2-1 Carrick Rangers Colts |
Every year this fixture is the one that probably stands out the most on the calendar, and this year it was no different. The Blades have the best record of the two sides, and Carrick Rangers have only one victory to their name in four seasons. Despite this, Carrick went into the game as favourites, due to the poor recent form from the Blades, culminating in a new record of three defeats on the trot. However, things did not go to plan for the home side, with the Blades showing at last their true quality, and potential to be the top team in the league. The former treble champions started the better of the two sides, with Carrick being pinned back in their own half for much of the opening 15 minutes. Then the usual suspect, Craig McBride, who has a great nack of scoring important goals in these big games, slotted home after Ruiséal McKimm had made a darting run and fired his shot across the face of the goal, which the Carrick keeper failed to deal with. The ball found its way to McBride who finished with ease. After the restart Carrick increased the tempo and it took only a few minutes before they recieved a penalty for a late challenge from behind by the last man. Crothers in goal guessed the wrong way and couldn't get across to prevent it going in. For the next 10 minutes Carrick took the upper hand, and their best chance came, when a long ball bounced awkwardly right in front of Crothers who misjudged the flight of the ball and was only able to tip it on to the crossbar. A Carrick striker was quick to pounce, but so was Crothers who halted his progress before Ryan Dickie cleared the ball away. This close shave inspired the Blades who went up a few gears once more and were the better team for the remainder of the period, despite Carrick coming close on a 1-on-1 with the Blades keeper. The second half started like the first with a high tempo, and both sides showing how much they wanted the three points. But it was the Blades who had the better of the chances, with Carrick forcing very few shots that troubled Crothers. Johnny Craig was his influential self in midfield and took the game to Carrick, playing in a more offensive role than usual. There was brilliant displays all over the pitch. Jason Harper looked back to his best and caused all sots of problems down the left flank and Ross Patterson had an impressive game in midfield, but his game was to get much better. The arguable man of the match however was Craig Morrow, playing in a defence that denied Carrick any real opportunities, he won virtually every header, and read the game very well. After some late challenges and high-flying tackles Andrew Crozier and Ryan Dickie were booked, but both looked very solid in the backline. Then, the goal ; probaby the most likely candidate for goal of the season, after Carrick gave away a soft free-kick 30 yards out, Ross Patterson let fly with an unstoppable curling drive that flew in off the bar in the top-right hand corner. After the goal Carrick tried to peg the Blades back but got nowhere, and the Carrick keeper came out of his goal for every corner and even throw-ins showing the desperation of the Carrick team. They also finished the game with ten men after verbal abuse at the referee, seen a sending off in the last few minutes. A great team performance ensured all 3 points go back to Avoniel, and the league is still within their grasp.

5/11/05 - Blades F.C. Youth 1-3 Chimney Corner |
|
Another poor performance today meant that the Blades set a new club record for straight league defeats on three. The Blades line-up was also somewhat puzzling, with 1st choice goalkeeper Lewis Crothers playin as a third striker and Matthew Gillham steeping into goals again after he got his full debut in the 2-0 dfeat to Carniny last week, while Crothers was away. Chimney Corner opened the scoring after around the 15 minute mark, when Gillham was chipped in goal. The game was very heated, and tackles came flying in from both sides. Ruiséal McKimm came close when from around the edge of the box he hit his shot over the bar. Then the goal back for the Blades when Jason Harper put through Crothers, who got inside the box and was ready to shoot before he was on the recieving end of a hard sliding tackle. The defender did make contact with the ball, and the decision was somewhat dubious. Craig McBride cooly converted the penalty depite the keeper going the right way. There was also a few chances to take the lead, when a better ball in from the wings would have set Lewis Crothers and Ruiséal McKimm through on one-on-ones with the Chimney Corner keeper. Chimney Corner's second goal came from a free-kick, which sailed to the back post and was headed off the post and in the back of the net. Manager Paul McMurray made a few changes in the second half, with Crothers going back into goals, and Gillham coming off for striker David Davies. Carl Barklie also replaced Martin Armstrong, and did well at right back.. The Blades couldn't find a breakthrough in the second half, with Ruiséal McKimm coming the closest to drawing the scores level. Then Chimney Corner killed the game off after Crothers saved well from a well struck shot that looked to be destined for the net. The resulting corner failed to be cleared, and after it flashed across the six-yard box, it was hammered in from close range. Before the final whistle Jason Harper struck the bar, with a curling free-kick, but no-one was on hand to fire it home after the rebound. The Blades are now on their worst run of form in four years, and are in not ideal conditions to going into a very tough game against Carrick Rangers Colts next week.

29/10/05 - Carniny Youth F.C. 2-0 Blades Youth |
|
The Blades were missing several players from the first-team squad. Lewis Crothers, Andrew Crozier, Johnny Craig, Craig Morrow, Carl Barklie, Jason Harper, Ross Patterson and David Davies were all unavailable. Considering their absentees, the effort put in by the squad today was outstanding. Despite this the Blades could not come away with any points, and the lack of composure in front of goal, meant that the Blades have only scored 1 goal in their last 3 matches. The Blades started the game well with McKimm unable to hit the target after 5 minutes. Carniny's first goal came from a 40-yard freekick, which Gillham in goal will be disappointed not to have kept out, and he was left standing helplessly as it flew in. The Blades worked very hard for the remainder of the first-half but created few chances in front of goal. The second half started with the Blades putting Carniny under a lot of pressure, but they could not create any clear-cut chances. Carniny's second goal was a header from a free-kick that went over Gillham's head, and the Blades defence left a lot of space for the Carniny striker to fire home. Then 10 minutes from time, after countless hard challenges from either side, the game saw 4 red cards, after a scuffle between the players. The red cards came after a lot of pushing and shoving, and the referee felt it necessary to send off David Young and Gary Murphy. After the red cards, there was a lot of space opened up on the Showgrounds pitch, and the Blades created a lot of chances, but they couldn't find the target, and come away from Ballymena with no points.

22/10/05 - Blades Youth 0-5 Comber Rec |
|
A disappointing result for the home side, only spared by Carniny losing away to Chimney Corner. A poor performance in the first half with Comber Rec taking their goals well, but the Blades defence played far too tightly and Comber exploited this, by using the vast amounts of space down the flanks. All four of their goals were probably down to poor defending but Lewis Crothers also didn't have the best of games in goal and will feel he could have stopped a couple of the attempts if he was at his best, despite none of the goals being directly his fault. The usual attacking threats of Jason Harper, Ross Pattreson, Craig McBride and Ruiséal McKimm all were not firing on all cylinders, and the Blades will be thankful to Chimney Corner, for keeping their league challenge alive with a 2-1 home win to league champions Carniny.
Blades Team vs Comber Rec: Crothers (Gillham), Taylor (McKimm), Barklie (Lavery), Craig, Morrow, Millar (Armstrong), Harper, McBride, Crozier, Patterson, Davies(McClean) HT: 0-4 FT: 0-5 YC: Taylor, Crozier RC:0
15/10/05 - Comber Rec 0-1 Blades Youth F.C. |
Another three points, as the Blades stuttered to a 1-0 away win. This was a game that the Blades seemed to control throughout, but Comber did have some decent chances to go ahead in the first half. They hit the bar in the 15th minute, and came close on a number of occassions, but the Blades had the majority of the possession and made countless chances of their own. Harper, McKimm, Davies, McBride and Taylor all came close. So at half time it was 0-0 and the Blades were worried about dropping two points in a game that was a must win to keep the pressure on Carniny and Carrick Rangers. Last season the Blades drew twice with unfancied Upper Ardoyne and some people may have felt this was going to be the case against the Rec. This wasn't the case though, and in the second half the Blades finally got their breakthrough around five minutes from time. The second half began like the first, with Comber Rec being on the recieving end of a huge amount of pressure, and it seemed only a matter time before they were to fire in. Andrew Crozier got tempers ragin when he nearly got sent off, but escaped with a yellow, after some wild challenges in the middle of the park. Gary Murphy also limped off injured, and was replaced by Mark Tweedie. Then the Blades seemed to find their chance when they recieved a penalty mid-way through the second half. David Davies steeped up and hit a poor penalty which was easily saved by the keeper. The Blades then escaped from being behind when Crothers in goal saved a close range effort, and Carl Barklie and Johnny Craig made last ditch challenges. Then the only goal, when after a strong challenge, David Davies hit a sublime lob over the keeper to make up for his earlier miss. Jason Harper also came very close after a mazey run through the defence, but it ended 1-0.

08/10/05 - Blades Youth 4-1 Upper Ardoyne |
An early goal from Upper Ardoyne failed to stop the Blades gaining all three points, with a goal from Ruiséal McKimm and a hat-trick from Ross Patterson. The game started off pretty evenly with neither side gaining an advantage until ten minutes in, when a long-range strike curled into the top corner, when Lewis Crothers misjudged the flight of the ball. This goal got the Blades going, and a few minutes later McKimm converted Patterson's low drive across the six-yard box. The Blades then got into their rythm and a well-worked move resulted with Craig Morrow playing a pin-point through ball over the defence to Patterson, who brought it down before firing home. The rest of the half the Blades increased the pressure with Craig McBride smashing a header off the crossbar and McKimm forcing two good saves from the opposing keeper. Ardoyne rarely got out of their half for the remainder of the period. Despite this they created a great chance when they got one-on-one with Crothers in goal who saved well with his feet. At half time the score was 2-1, despite the Blades being convincingly the better team. The second half started off well again for the Blades and it only took a few minutes for Patterson to get his second when he rounded one defender and then he hit a well placed shot which hit the back of the net for the Blades' third. This stopped any chance of a comeback for Upper Ardoyne and Martin Armstrong and Matthew Taylor looked calm down the flanks, with no-one getting through the centre with some good defending by Andrew Crozier and Johnny Craig. There was a number of substitutions in the second half with Chris McClean, David Young and Carl Barklie making their debuts for this season, and Ryan Dickie and Alan Millar also coming on. Martin Armstrong came off after a solid performance at right-back in his first game of the season. The game slowed down after this but there was still time for another Patterson goal to seal his hat-trick when he calmly finished from inside the six-yard box. A good performance by the Blades, with Craig McBride being makeshift captain and holding the midfield together well. But it was the forward line of McKimm and Patterson who won the points, spearheading the attack well.

24/09/2005 - Blades Youth 5-1 Chimney Corner YFC |
A brace from Jason Harper and a hat-trick from Ruiseal McKimm gave the Blades all three points today against league newcomers, Chimney Corner. It was the newcomers who struck first with 15 minutes gone, when a mix-up in the Blades defence gave the opportunity for the Chimney Corner striker blast the ball in the top-left corner, past Crothers in goal. But the Blades were still in control of the game, as the goal came against the run of play. Misses from Mckimm, Harper and Davies stopped the home side from pulling level, until Ruiseal McKimm grabbed his first goal of the season with a header, after he hit the bar and forced a good save from the keeper. The scoreline may have been close at half time, but in the second period, the Blades showed their class, and why they won the treble two years ago. Firstly a well took goal from Harper from a cross by Mark Tweedie on the right. Then McKimm grabbed his second with a good finish to put the game beyond reach for Chimney Corner. Then a long-range screamer from Jason Harper made it 4-1. The last goal was a brilliant team move, which finished with Jason Harper back heeling the ball for McKimm to slot home for his hat trick. Harper came close to grabbing his own hat-trick towards the end when his shot cannoned off the cross bar but the score reamined 5-1 to the Blades. Ross Kane went off injured in the dying moments but the game was already won. The Blades keep the pressure up on Carrick Rangers and Carniny in the race for the title.

Blades Youth 0-1 Carniny Youth |
|
Not the result that was hoped for in the first game of the new campaign, but the Blades battled hard against last year's league champions, and arguably should have had all three points. The Blades rattled Carniny in the first half with some neat moves down the left flank, but they couldn't convert their possession into any clear cut chances. Carniny had the best chance of the half when the Blades defence got caught napping and the resulting one-on-one resulted in nothing with the Carniny striker slipping at the vital moment. 0-0 was a fair result at half time, but everything changed in the second period. Again the Blades had most of the possession but they just couldn't play the final ball in. Then Carniny started to break through midfield on a number of occassions and they very quickly came close, but Crothers in goal stood big in the one-on-one. Then the winning goal came a few minutes later, when Carniny played in a drilled cross, which was slotted home past the advancing Crothers. The Blades then made some much-needed subsitutions, with Andrew Crozier and Ruiseal McKimm coming on for Craig Morrow and David Davies. This changed the game with Crozier playing in a holding midfield position. The Blades changed to a 3-4-3 and they came close through Ross Patterson and Jason Harper. Then Carniny came strong and over-runned the Blades defence. Carniny came close on a few occassions, before Ruiseal McKimm could have won it, but he couldn't connect when the ball flew across the 6 yard box. Three points for the champions in the opening game, but the Blades ran them very close, and will be looking to close the 3 point gap before too long.

Comber Rec 0-4 The Blades Youth F.C. |
|
The Blades marked their final pre-season friendly with an impressive 4-0 win against league newcomers Comber Rec in Comber. Goals from David Davies, Jason Harper, Ross Patterson and Ross Kane sealed the win, but the game may be remembered for a number of punches thrown by both sides. The Blades took a while to get going in the first half, even though they opened the better. Comber Rec couldn't get the space to force Crothers to make a save, and this was the case for most of the match. Both sides lacked composure in the first half, but all this changed in the second period. First David Davies fired in and this was followed up by a drilled shot by Jason Harper, which went in off the post. Then the first bit of trouble with the Comber Rec goalkeeper trying to head-butt Andrew Crozier. Crozier hit back but it was broken up fairly quickly. Both players remained on the pitch. Comber Rec were clearly getting frustrated at their lack of possession and chances. Ross Patterson soon made it three with a brilliant long range shot which fired in to the top-right hand corner from all of 25 yards, and then Ross Kane's free-kick sailed past the Comber goalkeeper and in off the post to make it 4. Ruiseal McKimm and Ross Patterson worked hard to get more goals but none came. Comber tried as well but the centre-half pairing of Ross Kane and Johnny Craig didn't let anything through. Then 6 minutes from time Comber Rec's goalkeeper dived at the feet of Ross Patterson and they both collided. Then the goalkeeper yet again lost his temper and swung for Patterson and missed. Patterson hit back and floored the Comber keeper before the referee came across and decided to end the game. Overall a good win for the Blades ahead of next saturday's opening league game between the champions of the last two years, but luckily it was only a friendly today and no suspensions were given out.

Blades F.C. 1-1 Orangefield |
|
The second pre-season game of the season ended in a draw, even though the Blades should have claimed the win. The Blades had 22 players available for selection, and in the first half they fielded a team without several first team players. The first-half was never taken control of by either side, with both sides failing to find any rythm and it was mainly long balls for the Blades forward line of Ruiseal McKimm and David Davies to try and work with. Both sides came in at half time very evenly matched at 0-0. But in the second half it all changed with the Blades bringing on several first team players, and the clever thinking of Jason Harper and Craig McBride was creating chances. The Blades came close on several occasions before Jason Harper hit the back of the net to get him off the mark for the new season. The Blades looked in control, even though Orangefield kept pushing up the pitch, with Johnny Craig and Ross Kane stopping everything thrown at them. Orangefield realised they weren't going to get anywhere playing through the middle, so they looked to the flanks, were they got their goal. Ryan Dickie was beaten on the left, and the resulting ball in took a wicked deflection and skidded past Crothers in goal. Matthew Taylor nearly got it off the line, but ended up slicing it in with his weak foot. An encouraging performance from the Blades, who play Comber Rec this Saturday.

Reigning Champions First Test For Blades |
The East Antrim Invitational Youth League has published the first fixtures for the 2005-2006 season, and a mighty test awaits The Blades in their first league match. Carniny won the league last year a whole 10 points clear of 2004's treble champions, and it is something that has to be put right this season. The Blades could well have won the league last year, but for some inconsistent results against the smaller teams, and this is what made the gap between the two clubs bigger than it really was. After all Carniny finished just 1 point above Carrick Rangers Colts, a team that the Blades beat twice in the league. The game is set to be a huge contest, and both clubs will be looking for maximum points to get their league campaign up and running. The following fixture is at home to new boys Chimney Corner. Here are the opening fixtures for the 2005-2006 season;
Sat 17th Sep - Upper Ardoyne v Comber Rec (Inverary Playing Fields)
Sat 17th Sep - Blades F.C. v Carniny Youth F.C. (Avoniel Playing Fields)
Sat 17th Sep - Carrick Rangers Colts v Chimney Corner Youth (Foundry Lane)
Sat24th Sep - Carniny Youth F.C. v Upper Ardoyne (Wakehurst)
Sat24th Sep - Blades F.C. v Chimney Corner Youth (Avoniel Playing Fields)
Sat24th Sep - Comber Rec v Carrick Rangers Colts (Loughside, Shore Road) |

Blades Youth F.C. 1-2 Orangefield Youth F.C. |
The first match of the new season was played on Thursday night at Avoniel in a friendly match against South Belfast League side, Orangefield. The Blades lined up with several first-team players from last season such as Lewis Crothers, Matthew Taylor, Ryan Dickie, Mark Tweedie, Andrew Crozier and the injured Jason Harper. Harper was playing despite missing recent training sessions. Neither side really took control in the first half, with Orangefield probably having the best chance when clear through Orangefield's front man blasted over. Orangefield played a lot of direct balls, but most were either dealt with by the Blades defence or collected by Crothers in goal. The Blades played a very different line-up and it was clear that some players were'nt most comfortable in the positions they were playing. The Blades were also without playmaker Craig McBride and Jason Harper was clearly not at full fitness. The second half started like the first, but with Orangefield creating a few more chances, but none managed to trouble Crothers, before a throught ball deflected off Jay McCann and through to the Orangefield attack and it was slotted home in the one-on-one past Crothers. The Blades then changed several players including their keeper, for a trialist from Carnmonney Colts and brought on last year's third-top scorer Ruiseal McKimm, which seemed to change the game. The Blades looked to play in McKimm to use his pace to create a goal, and on several occasions the pacey striker came close. The Blades did break through soon after from another trialist from Carnmonney scoring a well took goal. Orangefield won the game however in the dying seconds with a somewhat dubious penalty awarded after the referee judged Ryan Dickie to have handballed in the area, but the result didn't matter, as the Blades will feel they were the better team.

H&W Becomes The Blades Youth |
|
From the start of this season, Harland and Wolff Youth have become The Blades Youth F.C. This comes after ties between The Blades F.C. and H&W grew strong towards the end of last season. Harland and Wolff will also have a change to their home kit, with it now being Sheffield United's complete kit. This is due to the Blades F.C. having strong links with Sheffield United F.C. The Blades Youth F.C. will continue to play in the East Antrim Invitational Youth League, with league fixtures to be announced shortly.
|
2005/2006 Season Starts For H&W |
After several weeks off, H&W start pre-season training this saturday (23rd July). The first traning session starts at Avoniel at 10.30am. There is sure to be a few new faces on the trainiing ground, at the start of H&W's 4th competitive season. A few changes have taken place in the summer. Last year's Player Of The Year, Alex Russell has left to Pittsburgh, and the club are set to become The Blades FC's youth development squad. The team will be hoping to regain the treble this year, and thereare still quite a few players in the team who were present in the treble-winning season.
|
2006 Changes To League |
This year all teams competing in what would be under16 football this year, will be playing as under17. The change was made by the East Antrim Youth League, so that it would agree with UEFA and FIFA regulations. So far six teams have been confirmed for participation in the East Antrim Youth League 2006. Along with last year's top three, Carniny, Carrick Rangers Colts and Harland And Wolff Youth, Upper Ardoyne, Comber Rec and Chimney Corner have been incuded in the provisional list for 2006. The registration deadline for the league is 3rd July, so there is still time for other teams to be registered. Carnmonney Colts will definately not be playing in the league next year because their team has folded. Two teams from last year's league are also not included in the list, Ballyclare Comrades and Castletown Eagles. In total nine clubs have so far applied to play in the league next year but three have un-named clubs been rejected and may appeal the decision.

24/06/05 -Russell Completes Move To States |
|
Harland and Wolff centre-back Alex Russell this morning left Northern Ireland to emmigrate to America with his family. This comes just two weeks after Russell was made Manager's Player Of The Year at the club. Russell played around 20 games for H&W, and was a key member of the back-line which conceded the least amount of goals in the East Antrim Youth League. Russell formed a good partnership at the back with Andrew Crozier and goalkeeper Lewis Crothers, and his departure leaves a gap to be filled at the back for H&W. Russell was quick, good in the air and had solid tackling. Apart from playing for H&W he also played for Shorts.

Alex Russell Recieves Manager's Player Of The Year Award 2005 |
|
This year's award was recieved by Yankee centre-back Alex Russell. The American defender has been on top form in the second half of the season, apart from having a slight change of position in the League Cup game against Carniny, when he thought he was taking over Lewis Crothers as goalkeeper. However, apart from this, the 5ft 9in defender has went from strength to strength throughout the season. His tough tackling, good heading and pace have made him an excellent new signing this season, but he has to finish his short time at the club, as he immigrates to America in the next couple of weeks. Well he'll certainly remember H&W, due to the award he recieved tonight.
|
Harper Wins Player's Acclaim |
| Jason Harper has received this year's Player's Player Of The Year Award. He recieved the award after recieving the most votes from his team-mates. He finished the season as the club's top scorer and probably had the most assists too. He has been the main threat going forward this season. He has came up with some vital goals along the way including three great strikes against Carniny and a great free-kick against Upper Ardoyne. |
|
Millar Volley Nets Award |
| Alan Millar's powerful volley against Carrick Rangers won the Goal Of The Season Award. The goal set H&W on their way to a 2-0 victory, and went like a bullet past the dispairing Carrick goalkeeper. |
|
Armstrong's Efforts Awarded |
| Martin Armstrong recieved the Clubman Of The Year Award this season. He captured the award, due to his continuing effort throughout the season, despite not being a regular in the first XI. Martin has played in many different positions this season, but he has always put in 100%. The height of his season came with his consistently impressive performances at right-back, which also made him joint Player Of The Tournament. |
|
2005 Awards Winners |
|
This year seen five awards presented at the Sydenham Legion by club chairman, John Long. This season has been a mixed one for Harland and Wolff, which has seen them go from the top of the league on a few occassions to finishing third. Also the club was knocked out of the cup by a golden goal against Carnmonney, and the club was disqualified from the league cup, with them having a real chance of winning it. But witha few more players and staff, 2006 should be a successful year for H&W. The results of the awards are below;

14/05/05 - Harland And Wolff Y.F.C. 1-3 Orangefield F.C. |
|
With the league season over, there was another friendly on Saturday against Orangefield, and this time the score was very different to the big win last week. In the first half the game was very even, with a makeshift H&W side holding the visitors to a 0-0 draw at the break. The H&W first-half squad including several former Carnmonney Colts players and the rest of the positions were took up by mostly first-teamers. In the second-half the eleven was almost completely changed. In the second half Orangefield started applying more and more pressure on the H&W backline and this produced a few chances that were missed or hit straight at the keeper by the Orangefield strikers. Then around 15 minutes into the second half a mix up between keeper Lewis Crothers and defender David Young allowed an Orangefield striker in for a simple tap in to seal the first goal. The second goal came about 5 minutes later when Orangefield receieved a dubious free-kick on the edge of the area, which was sent flying in to the top corner past keeper, Crothers. Orangefield then got another golden chance which was well stopped by Crothers but H&W then pulled one back with a penalty by Brian Horran after a good effort from the Orangefield keeper, but this wasn't enough, as Orangefield regained their two-goal advantage with a close-range shot after some poor defending. Minutes later Orangefield got their own penalty which was poorly hit and was saved by the legs of the keeper after he had been sent the wrong way. The game then was more even for the rest and remained 3-1 at the whistle.
