Agrippa, Cornelius

alchemist. (web link)
Agrippa appears on on a Chocolate Frog trading card (fw33 SS6, CF)
Celebrated wizard imprisoned by Muggle for his writing, because they
thought his books were evil.
Could it be that Rowling includes Agrippa in part because of the fact that
he was condemned by some for writing "about magic and wizards" just like
she is?
Alderton, Archibald
1568 – 1623
Famous for blowing up the hamlet of Little Dropping in Hampshire while
attempting to magically mix a birthday cake. (fw40)
Archie
Old wizard with a penchant for flowered nightgowns; Archie refused to wear

Baddock, Malcolm
Slytherin 94-01 (GF12)
Bagman, Ludovic ("Ludo")
former Quidditch player for the Wimborne Wasps
head of Dept. of Games and Sports
Ludo has problems with gambling -- he used Leprechaun gold to pay off
Witches, Wizards, and a few Goblins to whom he owed money and spent quite
a bit of time after the World Cup trying to avoid his angry creditors (GF)
He cheated George and Fred Weasley this way and they spent most of the
1994-5 school year trying to figure out how to get him to pay up.
Ludo was accused of being a Death Eater because he gave information to
Augustus Rookwood, an old friend of Ludo's father. He claimed in his trial
that he didn't know that Rookwood was a spy for Voldemort. He was
acquitted. (GF30)
Bagman's misconduct may have serious repercussions; the Goblins are now
distrustful of Wizards because of Bagman's cheating and Bill is having a
difficult time negotiating with them to support the Order of the Phoenix
(OP4)
"ludo" - L.: "play"
"bagman" - Eng. slang: "one who collects money, as for racketeers."
Bagman, Otto

Barkwith was a famous composer whose "Wizarding Suite" featured an
exploding tuba. This unfinished work is now banned, ever since a
performance in 1902 blew the roof our of the Town Hall of Ackerly (fw/36)
"musidora" from "music"
"bark" might be connected to the somewhat cartoonish idea that dogs bark
when they hear music being played or sung extremely poorly
Baruffio
wizard who mispronounced a charm and suffered for it (SS10)
Bashir, Ali
Ali is a flying carpet merchant who was very interested in importing
flying carpets into Britain. Arthur Weasley wouldn't allow it, so he tried

about the experience, revealing for the first time the existence of this

Lethifold away. Belby had at one time been voted the president of the

Very possibly this is a reference to Beatrix Potter, the author of The
Tale of Peter Rabbit and other children's stories.
Bode, Broderick
Sallow-skinned wizard with a mournful face who works for the Department of
Mysteries (GF7, OP8) Injured in an attack by Death Eaters, Bode lost the

Chief of the Wizards' Coucil in 1262, attended a Quidditch match and
offered 150 galleons to whomever caught a Golden Snidget which he released

million Galleons today. Madam Modesty Rabnott of Kent took to the field in
protest at the abuse of the small, defenseless bird, and caught the
Snidget with a Summoning Charm; she was fined 10 galleons. This event
started the practice of catching a live Golden Snidget bird as part of the
game of Quidditch. (QA)
"Barberus" is similar to "barbarian" and "brag" means to boast about
oneself. Each of these words suggest his character, which is bullying and
crude.

Creevey,Colin

to death to discover that he was a wizard and to find out about Hogwarts.
His father is a Muggle milkman. He has a younger brother named Dennis.
Colin is very excited to know the famous Harry Potter and in his first
year he took a lot of pictures of his idol. He even asked Harry to sign
one, but Harry refused. Colin has been known to follow Harry around or to
say "All right, Harry?" every time he sees him, just to hear Harry
respond. Colin's heart is in the right place, certainly, but he does tend
to get run over once in a while in the rush of events. Colin and his
brother tried to enchant the magical badges to keep them from saying
"Potter Stinks" but all they could manage was making them say "Potter
Really Stinks" (GF) Colin, along with his brother, joins Dumbledore's Army
and learns to do defensive and some offensive magic from Harry. (OP16)

Dennis was in his second year during the 1995-6 school year, but somehow
managed to get into Hogsmeade and attend the inital meeting of
Dumbledore's Army at the Hog's Head. He shouldn't have been allowed into
Hogsmeade until his third year, unless they changed the rules at some
point.

because of her Veela heritage

In the film, Seamus has an ongoing problem with his spells blowing up in
his face. In one of the deleted scenes, he offers to undo the Leg-Locker
Curse which had been cast on Neville, but is turned down. This offends
Seamus, who announces that his eyebrows have completely grown back, then
walks away to reveal that a patch of hair is missing on the back of his
head. This running gag was entirely invented by Steve Kloves, the
scriptwriter, from a single reference in SS when Seamus ignites a feather
in Charms class. Indeed, in the books it's Neville who melts cauldrons and
has all the accidents with magic, not Seamus (SS/f)
Flamel, Nicholas
alchemist, born c. 1326, still alive as of 1991
famous for creating the Philosopher's Stone
Dumbledore did some work with him, although not the creation of the stone,
since that must have happened six hundred years ago for Flamel to still be
alive in 1992. (SS17)
NOTE: The real Nicholas Flamel was born in 1330. Rowling changed the
birthyear for "her" Nicholas Flamel, apparently, since the books claimed
that he was "665 last year," which would have been in 1990 or 91. The
book, which was very old, apparently adjusted itself to the year in which
it is read, or the reference would be utterly meaningless.
"According to history, Flamel died in 1410, a few years after his wife,
Perenelle..." (pp.71-73)

essay by Brian Dorband about Flamel and the Stone

Flamel, Perenelle

Fletcher, Mundungus
a bit crotchety, it seems, one of the "old crowd" (CS3, GF10, 36)
after the fracas at the World Cup, Fletcher turned in a request to the
Ministry for reimbursement for a 12-room tent with en suite jacuzzi, but
he had actually been sleeping under a pancho propped up on sticks. (GF10)
Mundungus is a member of The Order of the Phoenix (NR2, OP2-8)
his nickname is "Dung"
he's a crook, which makes him mighty handy to have around sometimes, since
he hears things others don't (OP)
Mundungus smokes a smelly pipe, although Molly doesn't like him smoking it
in the kitchen. She doesn't like him at all, come to that.
"mundungus" reported to be the name of a particularly smelly variety of
tobacco
Flint, Marcus
Slytherin, 86-94 (repeated a year)
Q. Keeper and captain
From Sch1 interview:

Probably a student at Hogwarts, a contemporary of Bertha Jorkins, who she
spied on and saw being kissed by some unidentified boy. She complained to
Dumbledore, the Headmaster, when she was hexed as a result:
"He put a hex on me, Professor Dumbledore, and I was only teasing him,
sir, I only said I'd seen him kissing Florence behind the greenhouses last
Thursday..." (GF30)
Fortescue, Florean
owns an ice cream parlor in Diagon Alley (PA4)

Medieval wizardry.

Draco Malfoy. He had his finger bitten by Scabbers once. Goyle has short,
bristly hair and long, gorilla-ish arms. He is notoriously dim. He wears
green dress robes and resembles, to Harry's eyes, a large moss covered
boulder when he arrives without a date at the Yule Ball. Goyle was made a
Slytherin Beater in his fifth year (OP)

Driven away from his home by Muggle persecutors, Hengist is supposed to

Hengist was a Saxon King of Britain shortly before King Arthur's time, who
helped King Vortigern defeat Scot and Pict rebels. Later, he lead a
rebellion of his own, and eventually founded the county of Kent. Quite
what this has to do with wizardry, I don't know, but David Colbert offers
a similar suggestion in his book, The Magical Worlds of Harry Potter.

The myrtle tree is a close relative of the willow tree. "Moaning Myrtle"
