One astounding, unknown poet of these times is Shavonne L. Holton. Her work has been praised among her peers and used by others for different occasions. This aspiring entertainer would like to pursue a career that includes dancing, acting, singing, writing, and entrepreneurship.
Born in Indianapolis, Indiana on July 15, 1984, Holton has experienced many trials in her childhood that could have prevented her from being where she is today. As a child, she went through homelessness and poverty while trying to pursue an education. At Arsenal Technical High School, she participated in volleyball, basketball, school plays, Health Occupation Students of America (H.O.S.A.), National Vocational-Technical Honor Society as well as the National Honor Society, among other things. Holton graduated as number four in her class in 2002.
Currently, she is a sophomore in the Liberal Arts program at Purdue University. She is a member of the Jahari Dance Troupe which recently performed before a lecture by another great poet, Dr. Maya Angelou. This encounter and the lecture subject motivated Shavonne to write about the poets of the Harlem Renaissance which appear on this website.
